Editor Herald : Your corres potiucut, "Fieus," in your last weekly Issue, Is unnecessarily indignant he cause some one justly claims that figs will bear fruit iv six and twelve months from cuttings. I cannot write with experience iv Los Angeles, but In Riverside the brown and white Iscbia produce figs formed upon new wood, which had grown in six months after the cuttings were put in the ground. I bave now upon my block trees which have home and are bear ing full crops of "figs" only two and three years, last March, from cuttings. These trees are very large fortheirage and when the two-year old trees were six mouths old they were five feet high with corresponding branches and covered with tigs, some of which ma tured. Of course the cold weather prevented a full crop. One year from the cutting they were removed to their {lermanent places and bore fruit the ollowing season; and this year one of the trees is now laden with fast ripen ing fruit. I fancy "Ficus'" experi ence, if he had any, was with the common blue figs, two varieties of which are growing upon my grounds in the same row with the Ischia and Genoa, but produce nothing but leaves. Excuse me, Mr. Editor, for writing the above. I agree with "Fi cus" that there are a great many things written about this country which will not bear the light of truth and ought to be shown up, but his article, although presented as the em anation of the "Fig" itself, ought to be signed "Common Blue Fig," aud not comprehending the whole variety. RIVERSIDE PROPER. That part of Riverside allotted for the town proper is laid out in two-and one-hah' acre blocks. Nearly all of these blocks have been sold and are being improved by the purchasers more or less. Some of them are in a high state of cultivation. A neighbor of mine, MR DANIEL BUIINHAM Has a fine block, in the center of which is his cosy residence. All around are evidences of his Industry, care and taste. Almost every foot of his ground is occupied with tree or plant. Mr. B. has acquired quite a reputation for grafting and budding, and his attention for the past year has been turned toward budding the finer varieties of the orange atid lemon. Florida and Australia have contribu ted buds by mail and steamer for his skillful use. Next Spring Mr. Burn ham will lmve a choice lot of semi tropical and deciduous trees for sale. GENERAL IMPROVEMENTS, A stranger looking upon Riverside for the first time must concede that her people have the utmost faith in her future. The three substantial brick store 9of Messrs. Burt, Emmons Jk Cunningham and Lyon & Rosen thal give us quite a city look. Our la dies, who hitherto have had sufficient excuse for nut following the fashions very closely, because of the difficulty of gettiug the materials, now have the obstacle lemoved, and to their hearts' content our fair ones may flit from the gentlemanly and genial Mr. Lyon to the substantial Mr. Burt, and alter having added a new interest to the goods of both these stores they may visit Mr. Cunningham, who longs t> show his enjoyment ami good nature, by having his goods looked over by the Riverside ladies. SABBATH SCHOOL CONCERT. The Sabbath School of the M. E. church entertained and instructed as many of our good people as their room would hold with a concert last Sab bath evening. The veterans of the school joined the juveniles in scriptu ral quotations, and all seemed to do their best to make the gathering a success. O. W. Garcelon. Riverside, October 12th, 1875. The Professions and the Presidency. The confident prediction by so old and intelligent a statesman as Hon. Alex. H. Stephens, that the next Pres ident of the Lnited States will he a journalist, suggests the inquiry as to Bow the different professions have far ed in the past in the distribution of that honor. A hasty review of the list will be found to result as follows: Washington wasa f-oldier, Adams was a lawyer. Ma lison was a statesman. Monroe was v lawyer. John Quincy Adams was a lawyer. Jackson was a soldier. Van Bureu was a lawyer. Harrison was a soldier. Tyler was a lawyer. Polk was a lawyer. Taylor was a soldier. Fifmore was a lawyer. Pierce was a lawyer. Buchanan was a lawyer. Lincoln was a lawyer. Johnson was a lawyer. Grant was a soldier. It is true that Jackson was a lawyer as well as a soldier—a Judge as a Gen eral—but as lt was his career as a fight er that made him President, he is cred ited to the profession. So Pierce was a Brigadier General in the Mexican was, so we applied to him the corre lative of the proposition, that wo ap plied to his great Democratic prede cessors. It should be explained with respect to Madison that he studied law but seems to have been drawn into public life too soon to make any pro gress in tbe practice. Santa Monica Items. [From the Outlook.] Our sanctum was enlivened this morning by the presence of J. M. Bas sett, the wide-awake editor of the Los Angeles Herald. The flowers and bushes in front of the Santa Monies hotel, which the Herald reporter some time since mistook for "onions," aro looking fresh and prosperous. In these clear October days Santa Catalina Island, some twenty-five miles away, stretches its purple hills across ojir Southern horizon as clearly as if it were just "over the bay." Mr. H. K. Ebert, to-day shipped per steamer Mohongo, 4,000 pounds of comb honey. It was the product of a bee ranch in the Calutanga mountains This shipment is only a part of a crop of 10,000 pounds. J. J. Reynolds, who drives a stage between Santa Monica and Los An geies, "pulled up" in front of the pont offlce last Ttiesil iy eventing, and tum bling out a mail bag, delivered a little speech in thiswise: ' I bring a larger mall to Santa Monica than leaves L >s Angeles for Anaheim or San Bernar dino. Johnson's Club House gives evi dence of becoming by far the hand somest building in town. It is near ly ready for the finishing touches of the painter, who will no doubt con vert it into a "thingof beauty." Mr. Johnson intends to furnish his house in the most elegant tallies. In a few weeks "Jonesville" will be graced by the handsomest Club House south of San Francisco. Col. J. U. Crawford, Chief Engineer of the L. A. and I. R - X., seems to he gifted with a sort of übiquity. He is here, there and everywhere, pushing his work at all points. We bad a glimpse of him several times during the past week, and tried to chase him down to get an '•item," but so far, we have only caught the flying remark that an effort was being in ado to get the road within a few miles of Los Angeles, and make preparation to carry the Senator's passengers up to that poinl, where coaches would be ready. Number Seven in the Bible. On the seventh day God ended his work. On the seventh month Noah's ark touched the ground. In seven days the dove was sent. Abraham pleaded seven times for Sodom. Jacob mourned seven days for Jo seph. Jacob served seven years for Ra chel. And yet another seven years more. Jacob was pursued a seven days' journey by Laban. A plenty of seven years and a fam ine of seven years were foretold in Pharaoh's dream by seven fat :uid sev en lean beasts, and seven ears of full and seven cars of blasted corn. On the seventh day of the seventh month the children of Israel fasted seven days, and remained seven days in their tents. Every seven years the land rested. Every seventh day tho law was read to the people. In the destruction of Jericho seven persons bore seven trumpets seveu days, on tho seventh day they sur rounded the wails seven times, aud at the end of the seventh round the walls fell. Solomon was seven years building tho temple, and fasted seven days at its dedication. In the tabernacle were seven lamps. The golden candle-stick had seven branches. Naaman washed seven times in the river Jordan. Job's friends sat with him seven days and seven nights, and offered seven bullocks and seven rams for an atonement. Our Savior spoke seven times from the cross, on which be hung seven bout*, "jod after his resurrection ap peared seven times. In the Revelations we read of seven churches, seven candle-sticks, seven stars, seven trumpets, seven plagues, seven thunders, seven vials, seven an gels and a seveu headed monster.
