Some one directs a letter to the Her ald and puts it in Ihe Express in which he vents his grief over the ap plication of the term "idiocy" to the act of the person who made the mis take in registering a letter in San Francisco post office and wonders which Is tho most remarkable the idiocy of the applicant or the brutality of the editor who would apply such a term to the act. We give it up. There are brutes, idiots and fools —all re markable in their way, but which is which we don't know. Seriously how ever we will say that at the time tho item was copied from the Bulletin we had not the remotest idea who the in dividual was but now that we do know him we know that he is an intelligent gentleman and we know that no one is more ready to admit that heeding the advi-e of a letter carrier was an act of "Idiocy" than himself. We shall not allow "simplex" simpleton nor any one to have a higher opinion of the gentlein tn than ourself. The Old Folks' Concert. A large and appreciative audience assembled last eveningatTurn-Verein Hall to hear the Old Folks Concert, Fifteen ladies and twelve gentlemen comprised the "old folk*," and they well sustained their musical reputa tion. Miss Florida Nichols, Miss Ra chel Edelman, Miss Mattie Wheeler. Miss Laura Morris ami Mrs. Abernt. thy sang admirably and were heartily encored. Miss Laura Morris created a sensation, though it was her debit. Miss Edelman, in response to an en core, made an admirable selection, which was heartily applauded. Miss Wheeler and Miss Nichols turned that ever sweet melody, "Old Folks at Home," into a duet and sang it in the sweetesi maiiner.hringitig its touching sentiment home to each auditor. Of tbissong it is not too much to say that it contained as much melody and almost as much devotion as any of the sacred songs of the evening, An encore would have spoiled the effect of the music, and We were pleased to see the last stanza received iv appreciative silence. Of Prof. Havell's manage ment we cm only say pleasant words. Master Polaski made a hit iv the in strumental duet, and we witnessed Jabtz Lawson's precise timing witli breathless admiration. Before the close of the performance Prof. Hayed announced that, by request, the pro gramme would be repeated, or some thing s.tni nr given, next Saturday evening. On that occasion we hope to see the programme abbreviated slightly, so as to give more room for encores. The universal wish is that the same charming ladies and oblig ing gentlemen will take part. Such a combination of musical talent, in such a pleasant way, has seldom lieen seen in Los An/ekaS) and we look expect antly for tbe next concert. AN OFT TOLD TALE. [BY L- If. First Train of the Los Angeles and Indepen dence Railroad. On Sunday morning the informal opening of the Los Angeles nnd Inde pendence railroad took place. Hacks conveyed excursionists from the city to Cienega station, where the train of flat cars were awaiting them. The cars had been carefully prepared by Superintendent Crawford with seats, sides and awnings, and made a very comfortable conveyance. The trip w ns made in about nineteen minutes and tho passengers were landed in good order on Santa Monica wharf. One or two more trips were made dur ing the day, but the great occasion was the arrival of the Senator which took place about six o'clock. The fog was so thick that the steamer could not be seen until she was within one bundled yards of the wharf, and her appearance was a great relief lo all having friends on hoard. For several housa the locomotive had been whis tling for and got 1.0 response until a uuarterofan hour previous to her reaching the wharf, when her answer ing whistle relieved all anxiety. Sue rounded tin* what! iv good shape and soon hud her pesßeiigelS and their baggage on tiie dock ready lor the Los Angeles train. The return trip to Cieneaa was soon made and we were landed iv a bedlam of hackmeu, all desirous of gettingu load. Fortunate ly there were sufficient hacks und we were soon on our way to Los Angeles. The trip was made without accident and thus the informal opening of the Los Angeles aud Independence rail road ended pleasantly. Col Crawford Chief Engineer of the road, deserves the thanks of the excursionists for his care and attention und be will al ways be pleasantly remembered. The Paper Factory. Capt. George B. Walker, of Phila delphia, the manufacturer of paper from cactus, is at the Backman House. Mr. Walker is associated with a weallhy capitalist, and his improved machinery Is now on the way. He has patented his discovery of the material and improvements in machinery, and now all lie wants is a location and the material. He has been examining the water power in this vicinity and finds it fair. We trust he will receive every encouragement from our citizens, and that he may get a location to suit. The business he embarks iv will utilize An immense amount of waste cactus brush and will employ a large number of bands. Such manufacturers should be aided, and we hope our city and county authorities will aid them, even to exemption from taxation for a term of years. COURT REPORTS. Probate Court-O'M ei.ve.vy, J.
