We delight lo publish such an item of a police officer, for it shows them to be above suspicion. Rev. T.W. Greene, an eminent Bap tist clergyman of Denver, Col., is about coming to California, and, we trust, may be induced to give Los An geles a call. We heard him at a meet ing of the Evangelical Alliance at Leavenworth, Kansas, last fall, ami he made the dry hones of religious bigotry rattle with his eloquence. He is a superior pulpit orator. The following were the principal shipments from the Southern Pacific depot yesterday; 72 sacks of meal, from Aliso mills; 122 dry hides, from Gassen & Pico; 214 sacks of corn, from H. Newmark & Co.; 10 barrels of braudy, from L. J. Rose; 14 cases of honey, from Thomas Me La in; 70 sacks of feed, from Hellman, Haas & Co. Major McCrea goes out to day with the pay car. He will disburse about sixty-five thousand dollars this trip iv thisand San Bernardino counties. The disbursement of the Southern Pacific railroad each month in this valley averages sixty thousand to seventy-five thousand dollars per month, This is so much gold placed in the hands of the people, We have received statements con cerning the punishment of a child in one of our city public schools which are so conflicting that we feel hardly justified in saying where the blame, if any lies. The matter is one belonging rather to the Board of Education than to the journalist. To avoid the pos sibility of doing an injustice to any otic weforbear details and comment until weare In possessson of all the facts. The Temecula Indians. The California Indians deserve well of tho Government of the United States, for, in the early day, they ren dered valuable assistance to Fremont and other explorers. At the battle of Salinas Plains a company of Walla Walla Indians fought bravely, being in the front of the light during that engagement. During Fremont's cam paign in this vicinity the immense herds of stock were driven oif and the army of occupation was in Imminent danger of starvation, but for the in formation and aid given by the In dians. Yet, notwithstanding this service, the Government gives them no land, no blankets, no annuities. The Temecula Indians claim thai they receivetl from Indian Agent Lovett a long time ago a paper giving them a title to Temecula, but that Mr. Stan ley took the paper away from their Alcalde by force. Whether this be true, they have been ejected from their homes, and their only chance now la to.occupy some of the small reserves that are about being laid off", and then demand through our Senators and Representatives that the Government assign it to them. One thing is prob ably certain: that Temecula is lost to them and they must try to get a title to some other government land as soon as possible. If these were the scalping Indians and would turn out and kill surveyors, outrage women and brain children, the peace policy would send out a lew Quakers with car-loads of provisions, blankets and sealpiiiu-knives, but, being Industri ous tillers of the soil, the great Quaker heart is unmoved. The Orphans' Fair. Turn-Verein Hull was crowded last night on the occasion of the Orphans' Fair. Tiie ladies in charge had beau tified and ornamented the Hall until It was hardly recognizable. A hou auet stand occupied the centre of the oor and wus presided over by beauti ful young ladies, who dispensed flow ers to the lovers of nature. Around the hall were stands for fancy articles— a postotllce from whioh the festive youths received loving epistles from unknown inamoratas; a grab-bag, from which was drawn dolls, dressed and undressed, and all sorts of oddi ties; a wheel of fortine, where the fu ture was shown; a Fairbanks' scale, for weighing the adipose and exposing the feather weighis; an ice en am stand, which cooled off the apoplectic and the feverish. These were only a few of the attractions, The musical entertainment—extracts from Maltha, with Mad. Franzini, Miss Seaman, Prof. Arevalo, Dr. Fernandez and Mr. Guenette in the cast, and Prof. Knell at the piano, was unusually attractive. To-night tl'<e Fair will be better ar ranged and better attended, and we urge all the friends of the orphans to be present. The Indian Inspector. Mr. Edward C. Kembie, tho Indian Inspector, leaves to day for Arizona; Mr. Keinble first landed in San Fran cisco In 1840, when there were only twenty-five houses on tho site of the future great city. He started the first newspaper on the coast the California Star, and afterwards founded the Alta. He was with Fremont when the sail ors uruler Commodore Stockton occu pied Fort Hill, in this city, and was present when the treaty between Fre mont and the Californians was made, Don Pedro C. Carillo acting as envoy extraordinary for the natives on that occasion. So far as Indian affairs on this coast are concerned he knows the defects of Indian character, as well as their wants, and will make a correct report to the Interior Department. He has been warmly welcomed to Los Angeles by our citizens. Bound tor California. We find the following notice of a i leading Baptist preacher in the Den ver Xeu>B: "A party of excursionists, or emigrants, limited to twenty-five, under tbe leadership of Rev. Win fie id Scott, leave this morning for Califor nia, They-go over the mountains in a chartered patsenger coach, for which the railroad company receives $1,000, or at the rate of $10 for each passeti gpr. They will eat and sleep in tho passenyierear, eacli one taking a lunch, a pillow and a blanket, and it is an express condition of the charter that the car shall go through with the reg ular mail trains and not be side tracked or attached to emigrant trains. Most of the party kg with a view to permanent settlement on the Pacific coast. Passengers for San Francisco. Their points of difference, however, are nu merous, and commence with their ex istence. The former are best born in swamps, and the latter hatch well in dry sand-piles. Both are blood-thirsty and immodest. Neiiher ht-aitutes to invade tho abode of i nunc t-nee and virtue. Blood to them is Just as good, whether drawn from the cheek or the oalf of the leg. The one wages war only by night, the other at all lime* and at all places. When the inosqidto Is satiated he quits—not so wiili tbe flea. That animal, when full to reple tion, converts your body into a circus ring or a race track, and seeks to ben efit, his digest ion by violent exercise. Leap frog and hurdle-racing are his favorite amusements. The mosquito disturbs your rest and makes you ill tempered. The flea is your traveling companion. He accompanies you to church and causes you infinite torture during a long and tedious sermon. You watch the hands of the clock iv despair. You try to sit on .him; then endeavor to crush him by leaning back and fairly grinding the'pew. Ev erybody wonders at your uneasiness. The minister tells you that God made all things, and exhorts you to be grate ful for the manifold blessings heaped upon you. You try to look religious, but all in vain. Your heart rebels against God for making that flea. At last the benediction Is pronounced and you hurry forth as if from a funeral. Mingled rage and discomfort are clear ly evidenced in your features. You go home and do you reflect on the sermon? No. You go for that flea, with murder in your heart, and never rest until you have fairly captured him and heard his bones crack be tween your thumb nails. DEAFNESS Permanently Cured. On the Ist day of October I made oath before A. W. Potts, County Clerk, that I had been cured of deafness in a short time by Dr. Aborn, at the Back man House. As so many said my hearing was only temporarily restored, I publish this card for the purpose of informing all who are so skeptical that the cure is permanent. Under Dr. A bom's treatment toy hearing bus been entirely restored. My sore eyes and granulated lids, with which I was greatly troubled, have also been cured by Dr. Aborn; and my general health, which was very much broken down, has been restored, so that I now feel better in every respect than I have for the past eight or ten yeurs. I have gained several pounds in weight, and would cheerfully advise my friends, if in need of medical aid, to consult Dr. Aborn. Joseph Wild. Los Angeles, October IS, 1875. COURT REPORTS.
