Comin' Thro' The Rye.
A New York pictorial publishes an
illustration of "Camtn 1 Thro' the Rye"
and blunders into what we presume
is through p ipular misc inception of
the ditty, givim; a laddie and lussie
meeting aud kissing in a field of gruiu.
The lines—
If a laddie meet a lassie
Comm' thro' the rye,
and especially the other couplet:
V the lads they .mile on m •
When comin'thro' the rye.
seem to imply that traversing the rye
was an habitual or common thing,
but wh it in the name of the Royal
Agricultural Society could be the ob
ject iv trampling down a crop of grain?
The song perhaps suggests a harvest
scene where both sexes as is the cus
tom in Great Britain; are at work
reaping, and where they could come
and go through the field indee 1, but
not through the rye itself, so as to
meet and kiss iv it. The truth is, the
rye in this case is no more grain than
Kye B:;a'di is, it being the name of a
small, shallow stream near Ayr, in
Scotland, which, having neither
bridge or ferry; was forded by the peo
ple going to and from the market,
custom allowing a lad to steal a kiss
from any lass of his acquaintance
whom he met in mid stream. Our co
temporary will see that this is the
true explanation if he will refer to
Burn'soriginal ballad, in which the
first verse refers to the lass wetting
her clothes in tbe stream.

Asiatic Proverbs.
The well-known warning not to look
s g ft horse in the mouth bus its equiv
aleiit in Badsge, one of the Indian
tongues, "if any one offers you a Buf
falo, do not ask if she gives milk,"
so l the Maluyali rendering of "v
burnt child dreads the tire" is identi
cal with the corresponding French
proverb, "a scahled cat fears cold wa
ter." while the Hindoo version is very
picturesque and characteiistic—"He
whose father was killed by a bear is
sfraid nf a biack stum|)." The Euro
pean proverbs that "No man is a he
ro to Hist valet de chambre," and that
"Familiarity breed* contempt," ure
tersely and picturesquely combined in
the Tamil adage, "The temple cat
does nor fear the idol." The Malays
tepreve a boaster who glories over
the unfortunate with the pithy re
mark, "any one can leap a fallen tree;
and their proverb, "Running up and
down the boat does not bring one
sooner to tbe land," is a keen rebuke
to those who chafe and fret under cir
cumstances of forced inaction; while
the sacred wurt.iug not to cast pearls
before swine, Is antly paraphrased by
the question: "Wnat is t lie- Jusei of
reading the Vedas to a wild buffalo?"
Supposed Charms Against Evil.
Amongst other charms against evil
may lie named that of our ancestors,
who, when eating eggs, were careful
to break the shells, lest the witches
should use them to their disadvant
age. We do the sumo for a similar
reason; it is accounted unlucky to
leave them whole. They avoided
cutting their anils on Friday, because
bad luck would follow; hut we brave
improved upon their prnctice, and luy
down the whole theory as follow.-:
"Cut your nulls on Monday, cut them for
news;
Cut toein en Tuesday, a new pair of shoe*:
Cut them on Wednesday, cut them fir
health;
Cutth m on Thursday, cut them t< t wealth;
Cut them on Friday, cut tnem for woe;

Forall the nexl week you'll be ruled by the
devil."
Most grandmothers will exclaim,
"God bless you!" when they hear a
child sneeze, and thep sum up the
philosophy ot the subject with the
following lines, which used to deliirht
the wrighter iv the days of his child
hood:
"Sneeze on Monday, you sueez" for danger;
Sneeze on Tuesday, you kiss SStrangeri

These lines may be taken either as
charms or spells to produce the effect
predicted, or as omens of warnings of
the results to follow. In most parts
of Lancashire it Is customary lor
children to repeat the following invo
cation every evening on going to bed,
after saying the Lord's Prayer aud
the Apostles' Cieed:
"Mathew, Mark, Luke and John,
Hle-s the bed that 1 lie on;
There are four corners to mv bed,
Aed four ang»ls overspr ad,
Two ut the feet, two at ihe head,
tfany 111 thing me betide,
B -neath your wings my body hide,
Matin w, Mark, Luke and John,
Bless the bed that I lie on. Amen."
