The payment of the first notes giv en by the Rank of California will give renewed Confidence in Sau Francisco financial ciicles. The masses will then have a substantial assurance that the crisis has blown over. GOLD has an. upward tendency in New York, and yesterday reached 115J, but afterwards fell to 115. Wheth er this is owing to the natural strin gency resulting from collect ions of the first of the mouth, we cannot say, but it is evident that the tightness of the money market is not relaxing. New York has recently lost one of its moneyed giants, in W. Is. ASTOB, and the loss produced no shock, be cause he was not a speculator, but his wealth had a standing value in real estate. The financial world was not alarmed by his departure, and values of stocks were not affected in the least How different the tragic deatb of It Alston! Astor had inherited his property and Ralston had achieved his position by the force O? genius. One was a careful drone, who added to his possessions, while the other was a restless, but generally successful, speculator. One fell like a withered tree, but the other fell like a giant and the very earth was shaken. Charles O'Conor, the eminent lawyer, is reported dying at his resi dence on Washington Heights, and Cardinal McCloskey has adminis tered the last sacred rites of the Catho licchurch. Mr. o'Conor,'is over seven ty years of age and has always main tained a character above reproach, both in his legal life and political ca reer. He bus been head and front iv the prosecution of tlie Tammany thieves and by the great moral weight of his character and his legal ability did much to consign Tweed to the felon's cell. His death would be joy ful news to the ring thieves in Now York, while the Democracy of the bet ter class would mourn the death of a christian politician and honest man. Ocii farmers, .should realize the im mediate necessity of planting out trees and shrubbery. Every tree planted is an enchancement Of th c value of the estate, and our farmers do not gener ally realize that until they wish to sell and then the wise man wbo has plant ed out the ornamental or useful trees and shrubs has the preference of the buyer. Look ut our city residences! The stranger iv our midst lowks in breathless admiration at the elegant gardens of (iovernor DOWHKY, Col. Howard, Mr. (). W. Childs and oth ers. All these have a great value iv tlie eyes of a buyer and our fanners should at once commence the work of beautifying their farms and ranches. Such an investment pays an Immense interest, and delay iv the work is money out of pocket. A New Court House. There is much said hy irresponsible parties, who pay no taxes, about the building of a Court House and City Hall and asking authority from tbo Legis lature to issue bonds for these objects. The men of the city and county who work and produce the real wealth and business of the city and county say, let us lirst pay the bonds or a portion of them that we now owe. Tbe taxes of the city and county have been due and payable for weeks and yet our people arc so pressed and cramped that they cannot pay, and the various funds have not a dollar in them. If there is a ditch lo make, a dam to construct or supplies to be pro vided, and no funds on hand to do it with, Immediate!] some brilliant fi nancier opens his mouth and lets fly biS cheap ink in advocacy of issuing bonds. These financiers care little what these bonds will bring iv tlie market, or what rate of interest they bear, it will cost them nothing. Let us go easy ami let us get a rest from pnblic plunder at least until the Na tion, State, County and Municipality emerges from the partial bankruptcy that at present afflicts them. Real Estate in Los Angeles County. Some of our resident population complain of tlie price of real estate in this county, :uul make it tbe phantom which is to drive away immigration from our borders, hut their objections are not tenable. Land can he obtained at nil prices, from the Government pittance to one thousand dollars an acre. Location, improvements and water facilities fix the relative value, and lhe grumbler can be accommo dated with any quality and quantity of land, from the homestead to a princely domain worth half a million dollars. It is not surprising that men who have laid out fortunes iv provid* tag never-failing water for Irrigation should refuse lo sell at a beggarly price, but it is rather ungrateful for (and buyers to object to paying them lor their enterprise. In the Bias tern stales agriculturists have only a few months for planting and harvesting, and then the cold windy blast is on them', compelling them to house and feed their stock, yet their land is worth a fabulous figure. Guano, bone dust, phosphates and other expensive fertilizers are tbe aids to their worn out soil, and a good crop requires ex pensive labor and the greatest Watch fulness, Frosts, insects, Hoods and intense heat are the annual enemies of the harvest, and yet the same over worked farmers will come here and raise a .series of crops, almost Without labor. Here the farmer tickles the earth and it laughs a harvest, stock riam on boundless pasture, while overhead a cloudless atmosphere re freshes tired humanity. Tin' power of the soil here, where water can be had, is almost Infinite. The farmer is independent of seasons, drouths and other calamities; one crop is succeed ed by another, and each is equally profitable and finds a read)'sale. The value of the enterprise of certain land owners, who have dug ditches, and constructed Humes, is not appreciated, but the next generation will do them proper honor, ami ascribe all our pros perity to their foresight and energy. By an examination of Philadelphia papers we find that Moody and San key are conducting their revival meetings on a grand scale, similar to Pat Qilmore's monster concerts. They have had engaged for them the old Pennsylvania Freight Depot, a build ing 230 by 360 feet, which will seat 11,00s) persons, and they have a select choir of three hundred singers. Mot - dy's sermons are common place read ing and when the history of these re vivals is written, iv the calm future, Moody will be more noted for lung power than for any particular God like gift. Moody has a choir of three hundred Singers, foot Jesus Christ de livered the Sermon on the Mount with out harp or choir accompaniment and rode to the Crucifixion on an ass. Marbleized Mantels. We were shown yesterday a fine assortment of marbleized iron mantels at the olliee of Perry, Woodworth & Co. The introduction of these mantels into Los Angeles has been compar tively recent but they are already be coming very popular. In their use a saving of fifty per cent, or more la made over the marble nnd :i more du rable ami liner finished article secured. They are made in imitation of por phyry, Egyptian and other varie ties of dark marbles and the resemb lance is so close that one can hardly distinguish between them the genuine and the imitation. The coloring mat ter is applied to (be iron while it is at a red heat and by this process tbe brightest polish and durability is se cured. The mantels will neither crack tarnish nor become defaced even with the hardest usage. Prices range from $20 to $0S with grate, Summer front, basket and all appliances complete. Messrs. Perry, Woodworth & Co. are sole agents for the city and county. WEATHER REPORTS. QuiscYjlll., Nov. 80th.—The old weather of tbe past few days has vir tually closed the navigation of tbe Mississippi river al and above Quiiicy. Several steamers have gone into win ter quarters here, and others are light ing their way to SI. Louis over ice and sand-bars. The POCOW is probably a total loss. The crew of the Pocow bad nearly perished until res cued by tbe citizens. Her deck was under water, and the ice was thirty let above the deck. Somebody has looked up the decree of divorce given the wife of Judge Van Brunt, last Christmas/and finds that it forbids the Judge to marry again until the plalntirr is actually dead.and grants the latter alimony oi 14,000 a year and the custody ofthe two chil dren. It is expected that th" Judge will soon resign and never return to Xew York. Latest Telegrams. 11l ATLANTIC AMI I'iHl lf LINE. [SPECIAL TO THE HERALD.] PACIFIC COAST.
