Remember the Episcopal church festival at the Union Club Rooms this evening. There will be a grand time and plenty of good things for the in ner man. Men were at work yesterday reno vating the deserted "Dive" alias Nov elty Theatre. After being closed two or three weeks the place gave forth an ancient and fish-like smell. Rafael Verala, whom we mentioned yesterday as being seriously injured at Wilmington, it seems, was thrown from a mule and received internal in juries .which may prove fatal. The San Bernardino Argua thinks that there will probably be a meeting called the latter part of this week, In dependent of party, to nominate a candidate for Congress, who is in fa vor of the Texas Pacific Railroad. Fisher now in San Francisco, we received a copy of the New York Herald, June Ist, on which was pasted a printed slip with these words: This paper was received by Messrs. Jarrett & Palmer's fast traiu which left New York June Ist, 1876. Attention is directed to order No. 1 of Grand Marshall Mitchell, request ing that all civic societies who pro pose to participate in the Fourth of July celebration report to him at once. The time intervening is com paritively short aud all tho arrange ments for pafcmde should be made without delay. A rumor was in circulation yester day to the effect that Chas. J. Shep herd, at one time manager of tbe Western Union Telegraph in this city, was married to Miss Francisca Wolf skill, an heiress, and one of tbe weal thiest laud owners of th i county. On dit tbat the affair took place in San Francisco aud that State Treasurer Estudillo acted as groomsman. Bannerman & Duuu, the reliable Commercial street Coal Dealers have just received a full cargo of Wilming ton coal and are prepared to supply the market in large or small quanti ties. Manufactories and establish ments requiring a constant supply of fuel will find it to their advantage to make a standing contract with Messrs Bannerman & Dunn. Constant smokers will find it great ly to their advantage to purchase ci gars by the box as they can do of Goldsmith & Falkenau at wholesale rates. In this way fifty per cent, of the expense of smoking may be saved while the smokers have a uniform brand suited to their taste and are not subjected to the "bit swindle" on every available occasion. Buy your cigars by the box every time. Indian Wells, the new-made termi nus of the Southern Pacific Railroad, is seventy-two miles from Colton and one hundred and twenty-nln« from Los Angeles. Thetrgument will be concluded this morning, by C. M. Thorn, iv favor, and Bruuson and Eastmaa, in opposition. The people seem to take a deep interest In the subject; a large number were present yesterday and we expect the Court room will be filled this morning. A Ripe Scholar. The fellows over the way, whose knowledge of one tongue is very lim ited, have the common prejudice of ignorance toward those who are ac complished in a diversity of languages. Wheu they find a gentleman of this kind they assail him with the term "polyglot," and natter themselves they have done a stunning thing, in stead of only having exhibited the length of their own ears.— Express. We fear that our motives have been wrongfully construed by our gentle manly associate of the Express. It was only as a tribute to his high ac complishments, his profound scholar ship and overpowering erudition that we applied to him the complimentary epithet "Polyglot." If he considers this an assault upou his gentlemanly acquirements, we beg him to be at once undeceived. Webster defines the word Polyglot thus: "(1), a book con taining many languages; (2), one who uuderstands many languages." Thus a gentleman who has a knowledge of French, German, Hebrew, Latin, Greek, Chaldaic and Choctaw; who speaks all fluently and has as thorough au appreciation of one as of another, is rightly termed a .polyglot. The title may be conferred upon him for honorable distinction, just as the sur name "Africanus" was applied to Publius Cornelius Scipio, who con quered the Carthagenians, or /Eneas, "the Pious," who had the affair with Queen Dido, orJove,"the Thunderer," who manipulated the lightnings of heaven. It was because our friend spoke Hebrew, Syriac, Latin and Choctaw; because, like the ancient Babel, he sent forth a multitude of sounds; because, like Solomon, he ex ceeded in wisdom, that we bailed this accomplished gentleman by the honorary title of Poly glot. It is true that our friend is not infallible, and who could be with such a breadth of scholarship? We admit that by au awkward slip he placed the Catholic Cathedral of this city in a most delicate situation, mod estly called by the French enceinte; it is further admitted that be attributed the parentage of Jacob to Abraham and Sarah, which is only an error of one generation, and is perhaps imma terial. Itisfuither conceded that in a recent dissertation our friend inad vertently transplanted an important city of Eugland to the sunny shores of France; but we will not prolong the trivial category of errors. Suffice it that our friend has richly achieved all the honors we have attributed to him, and we sincerely trust and eyeD insist that he will not reject through excess ive modesty tbe honorable distinction of "Polyglot." Board of Supervisors. Wednesday, Mry 7, 1876. Board met, absent Young. Tn the matter of appointment of County Auditor A E Supulveda was appointed. The plans and specifications submit ted by A A Pol ham us for a bridge over New River, at Washburn's cross- Ing were adopted, and the Clerk di rected to advertise for bids. A resolution was adopted declaring thut the Board had no authority to appropriate money for the 4th of July celebration. John Howe was appointed consta ble for Soledad township. E H Johnson was appointed for Fountain Valley Township. Westminster Road District was es tablished. The Board then adjourned until Ju ly when they meet as a Board of Equalization. While at dinner the other day the polyglot editor of the Express said to his waiter, with an arch expression: "Voulez voui passer das broad, Cbawles, please ?" He spoke in three languages.—Herald. The Editor of the Herald did bet ter. He cried out: "Sling me them spuds, and chuck them beans this way. Spuds and beans is my weak ness, betcher life V—Express. And having concluded his repast, the polyglot said to his landlady: "Donnez wtot un tooth-pick. Payyour billnextChristmas." On Monday next our friend Jack Wolf will become mine host of the Anaheim hotel, Anaheim. It is an opinion Are caunot bum out of us that there are few men born into this world who know how or are capable of learn ing how to keep a hotel.but we believe Jack Wolf to be one of those few men. At any rate our faith in him is so strong that when we go down to An aheim we shall go to his hotel and see for ourselves. We commend Jack to tne traveling public, as a Arab-class good fellow, who never rests until all about him are content and happy. The alarm of Are sounded at seven o'clock last evening was occasioned by the burning of a small stable near the Sisters' Hospital, above Sonora. Both fire companies were promptly on hand and brought their engines into service, preventing further spread of the flames. The damage was slight. Judge Carrillo leaves by the Senator to-day to attend the bedside of his sis ter, Mrs. Bobbins, who is lying at the point of death at the Arroyo Grande, in San Luis Obispo county. He will be absent several days. Novel Congratulations. Tbe San Diego World says: "We have bad a look at the beautiful little silver express-box that the genial Pridham, agent of Wells, Fargo & Co. at Los Angeles.sent up to the vet eran messenger of California, namely, Chips, on the recent happy anniver sary celebration in San Francisco. The box contained a regular way-bill from the Los Antreles office, signed by all the boys, as followeth: 1861 WBLLS, FAROO A CO.'S KXPRKSS. 1876 Way-Bill No \»> Chips, Messr from L Augeles to San Fran., May 9 '76. The water wagon on Aliso street alarmed a horse attached to a Chinese vegetable wagon yesterday and it made a determined effort to run away, but was stopped by by-standers.
