HOOD. Love thy mother, little one ! Kiss and clasp her neck again— Hereafter she nmy have a son Will kiss and clasp her neck in vain. Love thy mother, little one ! Gaze upon her living eyes) And mirror back her love for thee— Hereafter thou may’st shudder sighs lo meet them when they cannot see, — Gaze upon her living eyes! Press her lips the while they glow With love that they have often told ; Hereafter thou tnay'st press iu woe, And kiss them till thine own are cold, — Press her lips the while they glow. O, revere her raven hair, Although it be not silvery grey, Too early, death, led on by care. May snatch, save one dear lock, away,— O, revere her ravtn hair ! Pray for her, at eve and morn, That heaven may long the stroke defer, For thou may’st live the hour forlorn When thou wilt ask to die with her.— Pray for her; at eve and morn! This distinction between liking ami loving was well made by a little girl, six years old. She was eating something at breakfast which she seemed to relish very much. ‘Do you love it V asked her aunt. ‘No,’ replied the child, with a look of disgust; ‘1 like it. If I loved, it, 1 should kiss it.’ n She was in a J Lurry.—A gentle man was one day composing music for a lady to whom he paid his adresses.— ‘Pray, Miss D.,’ said he, ‘what time do you prefer V ‘Oh!’ she replied, carelessly, ‘any time will do—but the quicker the bet ter.’ The company smiled at the rejoinder and the gentleman took her at her word. Busy Damino. —It is reported that the miners in New Caledonia are active ly engaged in darning ( damning ) the rivers. Such appears to be the voca tion of all who have returned from those regions, so far as we can learn.— Sonoma County Journal. Wasn’t 1 There Too. —At a recent election in this State, a lad presented himself at the poll to claim the benefit of the elective franchise. _ Feeling a deep interest in a favorite candidate, the father, who was evident ly opposed to the boys preference, stood at the the ballot box,and challenged his right to vote, on the ground of his not j being of age. Theyoung man declared that he was twenty-one years old, that he knew it, and that he insisted upon his right. The father becoming indignant, and wishing, as the saying is, to ‘bluff him off’ before the judge, said:— ‘Now, Bob, will you stand up there and contradict me] Don’t 1 knowhow old you are ] Wasn’t I there V Bob looked his contempt for the old man’s speech, as he hastily replied— ‘Thunderation!’ s’pose you was, wasn’t I there too V This settled the sire, and in went the scion’s vote. Ladies’ Favorites. —There is too much truth in the following remarks of Addison : ‘I have found that the men who are really the most fond of ladies—who cherish for them the kindest respect are seldom the most popular with the sex. Men of great assurance—whose tongues are lightly hung—who make words supply the place of ideas, and place compliments in the room of sen ment —are their favorites. A due re spect for woman leads to a respectful action towards them and respect is mis taken by them for neglect or want of love.’ First Naval Gun of the Revolu tion. —At Marietta, Ohio, repose the remains of almost all those noble men who planted New England civilization at the mouth of the Muakinguin.— Among the monuments that speak of the olden time, the traveller will find one inscribed as follows : ‘Commodore Whipple, who fired the first gun of the Revolu tion upon tha Ocean.’ A woman should be amiable, benevolent, charitable, domestic, eco nomical, forgiving, generous, hospita ble, industrious, jndicious, kind, loving, modest, neat, obedient, pleasant, quiet, reflective, sober, tender, urbane, virtu ous, exemplary, yielding and zealous. Jggp* A steward wrote to a book seller in London for some books to fit up his master’s library in the following terms: —*ln the first place 1 want six feet of theology, the same quantity of metaphysics, and a yard of old civil law in folio,’ It is just as sensible a move to undertake to get married without court ing, as to attempt to succeed in business without advertising. A miner writing from Frazer River says ‘Frazer River is hell.’ Expressive, very. jjgp* The individual who was acci dentally injured by the discharge of his duty, is still very low. A truepioture of despair, is a pig reaching through a hole in the fence to get a cabbage that is only a few in ches beyond his reach. sar What is styled timidity, is probably nothing but the fear of show ing too little merit, “ THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE IS THE VOICE OF GOD.” ‘Cuff, why didn’t you kick that dog V ‘What am de use of kicking every cur what snarls at you ? Don’t you know dat am de way what he wants you to bring him into notice V A Chinese boy, who is learn ing Jinglish, came across the passage in his Testament, ‘We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced,’ and ren dered it thus : ‘We have toot toot to you, what’s the matter you no cum?’ ,03?“ It' s stated upon the authority of those who have heard it, that a cat, when her tail is pinched between a door and post, utters the vowels a, e , t, o, u, with great distinctness. If the injury is prolonged she gives w and y also. JEHT" ‘Hoy, how did you manage to get such a big string of fish V ‘I hooked them, sir.’ SEUF” There is a man out West who labors under the delusion that ‘Hon.’ placed before a man’s name stands for ‘honest.’ Many of us are led by our vices, but a great many more of us fol them without any leading at all. A shrewd little fellow, who had just begun to read Latin, astonished his maiden instructress who was fast ap proaching a certain age. by the follow ing translation: Vir, gin, a trap; Vir gin, a man trap!’ ZdT* ‘Mind your eye,’ as the thread said to the needle. ‘Permit me to introduce my self,’ as the knife said to the oyster.
