Bell cently returned from an extended trip in the mining districts of Custer coun ty. He went In by way of Wood river, visited the Independence and North Star mines owned by the Federal Min ing & Smelting company, where, he says, In spite of labor shortage, a iianlsoma production of high grade lead-silver ore has been maintained re | i throughout the season and that ih. 1 throughout tne season and that the new development tunnel to the Inde- ' s I j I pendence from the Star works, nearly a mile long, Is progressing at record speed, making 10 feet a day or 300 feet a month, which Bell now con siders handsome progress for tunnels 7 by 8 feet in the clear, says the Boise Stateman. Visits Seafoam District. Mr. Bell visited the remote Seafoam district on the headwaters of the mid lie fork of Salmon river, there September 14 and says the dis- j trict was well populated at the time, i but principally by big game hunters, 40 automobiles .having passed the Van ity Summit before the opening date and on his return several days later thlr success was evidenced by bucks and does hanging on trees at several of the camps. In regard to the mineral features of ! He was , Seafoam, the Inspector says It is one I of the best mineralized districts in ! the state, topographically very ged, embracing a complex of high 1 mountain ridges and canyons with ele- I vations ranging from 6000 to 9000 feet rug above sea level, well watered and tim bered. The creek courses are shaped canyons of water erosion which generally exhibit pronounced ice-worn glacial cirques and "U" shaped can yens near their sources. The only ! active mining operation was that of the United Metals & Power company undter the management of AVialter Gray, who is operating the Montana «y., _ | g rol) p | This property carries a vertical fis sure vein that is four feet wide, of hlgh grade concentrating ore in a tun nel 70 feet long maintaining a pay | streak of higli grade shipping mineral varying from a few inches to 36 inches in thickness and is said to average ^ 3150 per ton In lead, silver and gold.', The vein is traceable for two miles j with several other promising outcrops j of oxidized mineral carrying high val- j ues, and gives promise of a succes sion of ore shoots when fully devel oped. | Nature of Minerals. The general geology of the district, says the Inspector, embraces a broad field of eruptive gray granite, with many Immense dikes of quartz-por Phyry, also dikes of aplite and dia base and a zonal occurrence of mineral ! courses. The Montana group and I : other adjoining claims of the company enrry a series of closely parallel veins, „„ . , ,, _ a each giving good values in go] 1 and silver, and some of them also in lead i-'JCS u' I 18 cents a package » AMELS are in a class by themselves—easily the most refreshing, the most likable cigarette you ever smoked.
