FRIDAY MORNING, MAY 26. 1826._ We remind the citizens of Alexandria, that Mr. Bryan will deliver his Address, for the be* • nefit of the Boston Bard, at five o’clock this afternoon. It may be proper to state, since we know the fact, that it is not Mr. Bryan s inten tion to make a collection, but merely to promote the subscription to Mr. Coffin’s Poems, which are now in the press. Mr. Noah, the editor of the N. York Nation al Advocate, acknowledges the receipt of a letter from Christian Rosliusand James Work man, Esqrs. New-Orleans, enclosing as a com mittee, a check for 100 dollars, for the relief of Robert S. Coffin, the Boston Bard. On Wednesday last we published the late act of Congress further to amend the Charter ol the Town of Alexandria; and we add to-day an act of the Virginia Legislature, to establish a Turnpike Road, from Wiley’s Tavern in the County of Fairfax to the line ol the District of Columbia, and an act of Congress authorising the continuation of the said road to the town of Alexandria. The importance which we at tach to these laws, may, perhaps, be greater than they deserve; but we ure sanguine in the belief that they contain a redeeming spirit, which, if properly called into action, must ine vitably rescue us from the impending danger a ruinous apathy. We have more than once remarked that the Citizens of Alexandria have hitherto relied, too much, on their natural ad vantages, and consequently left to time what ’ nothing but energetic enter prize was capable of accomplishing. That pcficy seems now to be getting into disrepute, and in proportion as * it loses friends, our hopes of resuscitation in crease. The day has gone by when the Town could safely rely upon the operations of Stock ( om panies. Individual wealth has been vested in en terprises, from which it cannot now be safely drawn; and if it could, it would not be ad visable—as the burthen would bear too heavi ly on the wiUingy while the unwitting would participate equally in the advantages. The prosperity of the town concerns us ail, from the wealthiest property-holder to the most hum ble laborer, and as each experts to derive a ben efit from public improvements, so each should be required to contribute in the ratio of his in* terest. This can only he done by equable tax es, and for ourselves we care not bow heavy the tax, so the money be expended for the good of the whole. The gratitude of the American People to the distinguished Statesman and Philosopher, whose name is inseparable from the glory of his country, is manifesting itself in every sec tion of the Union. Among other evidences we find mat an adjourned meeting of the Citizens of Charleston, South Carolina, was held at their City Hall on the 17th irst. to receive the' report of the Committee appointed at a previ ous meeting to devise measures for relieving the pecuniary embarrassments of 1'homas Jef ferson. The following Preamble and Resolu tions were presented by the Committee, and unanimously acropieu : The Committee to whom was referred the Resolutions adopted at a Meeting of Citizens, on the 6th inst. declaring it expedient to relieve the per""l^,V crr«'J«n-»sS!!it’.’'.tS of 1 HOMS a JpF Tersox, have had the subject under considera tion, and respectfully report the following re solutions, viz — , . - _ He sot red, That we consider the Tame of 1 ho mas Jefferson, the distinguished Statesman, Patriot and Philosopher, as the enviable pro perty of his country, and that it is the high and estimable privilege of his fellow-citizens io .smooth the decline of a lile, which has been devoted to their service, by every grateful re turn in their power. Resolved, In the opinion of this meeting that it would be aflfrontive to the People, who can have but one sentiment on this subject, to take any measure conducive to the great object con templated, without affording to all an opportu nity of participating, and As the Committee confidently believe that the difficulty of carrying into effect the views of the meeting lately convened for that purpose, will lie in limiting, not in extending the amount to be contributed, they deem it important to recommend certain regulations subsidiai y to this end: Therefore, Resolved, 1st. That the Scheme shall be transmitted to every district and pa rish in the State, that the Citizens thereof, may at as early a day as will suit their convenience, afford their aid to this grateful service 2. That no citizen shall be permitted to pay more than five dollars towards this object, so as by the universality of the proceeding, to identi fy it with the Nation’s feeling and character. 3. That it he recommended, that a Committee be appointed in each District, promptly to cor respond with the Committee in Charleston. 4. That it be recommended to the General Meeting, to appoint a Committee tp correspond and freely confer with the Committees ‘ of the several States and CLties'on this delicate sub ject, sq as to device such means as will (without offending) evince the love, veneration aud gra v titude of the Nation. ' 5. That Subscription Papers be opened and deposited in the several Banks in the City, invi ting all the Citizens to contribute, and that whenevty a sum sufficient shall be subscribed 8c paid, the Committee hereafter to be appointed, be authorized to invest the amount in Tickets >or Shares in the Jefferson Lottert, and to de • vise and adopt such measures as may be deem » ed most suitable to secure the interest in the same to Thomas Jarrsasoji, ind his right h»irs I —and that the said Committee have a general and full power in the event that the Lottery be not drawn, and some other means of disposing : of the fund to be collected be generally adopted in other States, that they may so dispose of the fund, as may be most expedient to attain the end contemplated by these resolutions. (Signed) , JOHN L. WILSON, Chairman. It has long been known that ng Representa tive of Virginia can offend with impunity, the Richmond Junto, of which, it is as well known that Mr. Ritchie is the organ. That Junto put Mr. Randolph in the Senate, and vindicat ed his erraiick and licentious course until it became insufferable, even to those who had spurred him on, and threatened destruction to the great object for which he was elected, namely—to pull down the Administration, tight or wrong, and to stab the rrpu'ation of all who should venture to .support it. 1 hat he has faithfully devoted himself to the purposes of his mission cannot be denied; but it is equally plain that his incompetency as a statesman not less than his indiscretion as an assassin, and his vulgarism as a wit, has sunk him so low in the estimation of the public generally, that his friends are compelled to abandon him, or to relinquish their ambitous pursuit. Mr. Hit cliie has therefore received his orders from the Junto, and has accordingly issued the following proscriptive proclamation, interlarded ingeni ously with a little of the “damnation of faint praise. “We take no pleasure in recording the new scene,in which Mr Randolph lias exhibited, as on too many occasions of late, an unbecoming state of excitement. Why should he have stept out of his way to cast his censures oi> the Editor of the Boston CentineR Why abuse the man, because he was introduced on the door? Why abuse the Senator who introduced him?— Though we admire the intrepidity and zeal, which Mr R. has displayed in unmasking the misdeeds of the (*o\eminent, we are lur f’oni app'O'ing the out-of-the-way attacks wl ich he has made on so many individuals. 1 o make use of the comp .»rison oi Mr. Hamilton ofS C., his “rifle” wanders too often from the object in view—and is pointed at game which ho ought not to have noticed. He is carried off by the very excess of his feelings. Mis enemies a (Iroitly avail themselves of the errors, into which this imperfection betrays him, without making any allowances for the causes of it.” “He is carried away bv the excess of hisftel ings!” savs Mr. Ritrhie, “and his enemies a droit)v a' ail themselves of the error, into which this imperfection Irctrays him, without mukmfi any allowances for the C.l USES of it. W hat at e the causes ot it?—Porter?—Opium?—Insanity? _an overweening vanity?—Oi a while liver and a black heart? For all these causes his en emies have made “allowance;” and if Mr. Rit chie will point out any others, that carry with them the remotest probability, doubtless tbe\ w ill he admitted. 0 While we rejoice at the prospect of Mr Ran dolph’s prostration—at the return ol the days when he can again aay with truth, "The avenue to the public ear is shut a^umst me in Virginia”— let it not be supposed that our feelings towards tne Administration prompt us to wish that Mr. Randolph may be removed from the Senate Far otherwise.— We are fully convinced that the presence of sue h men as Calhoun and Ran dolph in the St tia’e, and McDuffie, Mitchell, Kiefner ar.rl Lireirpu in the House, adds more to the grow ing strength of the Adminis tration than any equal number of its ablest chamoions But as much as we love the Ad ministration we love v»ur Country more. We wish to see able and honest men in her councils, however they may be opposed to our political opinions. We would therefore prefer an Ar cher to a Randolph—a White toa Mitchell —a Henry io a L.ecompte—and a Buchanan to a Kremeii, and so ol the rest. From the JSew lork American. The following is an extract from the address marie by Mr Calhoun on the 4th March, 1825, on taking his seal as President of the Senate: “In fulfilling your ini pot tan t functions, some thing will depend on the skill and impartiality of the presiding officer. In regard to the former I can promise nothing. lam without experi ence; which can only give the requisite skill in presiding, and I feel that I must throw myself on your indulgence. I shall, however, endeav our *o compensate for thp want of skill, by the most rigid impakti \li i y ! ! In this office I shall regard only the Senate and its duties, and I shall strive w'th a feeling of pride (in the sta tion I trust not reprehensible) to preserve the high char nr ter already attained by the Senate for dignity and wisdom, and to elevate il still higher in the public esteem ! ! Suth were the professions of the Vice Presi dent in the newness of his (we must say, though we then thought differently)unmerited honors. How far he has redeemed the pledge then giv en—how far he has heeti impartial, (skilful he did not promise to be, and he cannot therefore be held responsible for failing in what he did not undertake)—how far in the discharge of his official duties has he looked to the Senate alone, its duties and its dignity—how far he has succeeded either in preserving or adding to, the high character of the Senate, we will leave to the records of the past session, and to the judgment of the honorable, and impartial among his fellow citizens to determine. prom the National Intelligencer, May 25. The last mail brought us news ol toe death of the Hon. Nicholas Van Dyke, a Senator of the United State* from the Siaie of Delaware. This estimable gentleman departed t'.iis life at Newcastle, on Sunday, the 21st inst ant, after a lingering illness, which he.endured. with philo* sephy and a realigned spirit. He ha* been ma ny years in public life, and no man ever entered it wh° bore throughout a more enviable cha racter for high honor and integrity, illustrated hy the most amiable and prepossessing man ners. In the bitterest of party times—embar go, war, and all—there was not, amongst all his political opponents, an individual who had an unkind feeling towards him, though the influ ence of his talents and character were felt when ever he mingled in debate, which he did not, unfrequently. He was the friend and associate of Bayard (of itself high praise) and his poli tics were of the same cast as his. GREECE. In private letters from Trieste of March 28, mention is made of the arrival of a Greek fleet of sixty ships of war at Missolonghi Letters from Paris state that the French and English Ambassadors at Constantinople have received instructions to demand an immediate arrange ment between the Turks and Greeks. The last advices from Central America, state that in the month of February an insurrection in favor of the Royal Government of Ferdinand, broke out in the State of Costa Rica, headed bv Samora, a native of the country.
