AWRgACTMiMiL, SATURDAY MORNING, JULY 8, 1826. _ The Washington and Baltimore papers con firm the painful intelligence that the illustrious author of the Declaration of Independence has bid adieu to this world of care. He breath ed his last at Monticello on the 4th inst. about ten minutes before cr.e o'ciock, ?. M. A letter from a gentleman io Charlottcsvihe to the Post Master at Baltimore, states the melancholy e \ent was hourly expected for three or four days before it occurred. We are authorised by our com spondenl!‘GR \ .iTunr.’’ to withdraw his proposition for a meet ing of citizens this evening, on the subject came l in his communication of yesterday. The quantity of flour inspected in Baltimore during the quarter whirh ended on the 30th of June, was 159,000 barrels. The Editors of the Baltimore American have received a letter from Havana under date of the 23d of June, which says—'“ Since I addressed you last, nothing has occurred worth commu nicating. We are here in the same tranquil state. Business is very dull—our market is glutted—flour quite a drug. I deem it useless to send you any papers, for if you except adver tisements, they are void even of local news.” By an arrival at New-York, the Editors of the Commercial Advertiser have received files jf London papers to the evening of the SOth 11 May, being six days later than former ad ices. We find nothing however, that can be considered important, unless it be that on the ,5th of May the bonded and importation corn hills were read a thirl time in the House of Lords, and passed. The vflte on the bills were 84 to 33. Previous to the question being tak en, the Earl of Liverpool assured the House that the latter measure would only be brought into action in cases of great urgency, and that , the 500/100 quarters of foreign Corn would not j be thrown at once upon the market, but would he introduced with caution, and in a mannci calculated to bear as lightly as possible on th* agricultural interest. The accounts Iroin the manufacturing dis tricts we:: favorable; trade was reviving, and active benevolence was relieving toe distresses of the unemployed. In the House of Commons, on the 26th of May, Lord John Russel moved his resolution for the mote effectual prevention of bribery and corruption, and said that the practices were so notorious that if the House did not do some thing to check them, it would be better at once to legalise the sale of votes like any other com inoiliiy. Mr. Hume stated that yesterday an i offer of a borough was made to him for 3000/. being so much for each vote, and 500/. to be ?oent.’ Sir R. Wilson mentioned that a similar communication had been forwarded to him.— The numbers on the division were equal; there being 62 a. es and 62 nors—the Speaker gave the casting vote in favor of the resolutions. The news from Rome is, that the Pope has completely recovered, and is active in his duties. The Constitutionnel, Journal des Debats, Cou rier Francais and Eioile, have been prohibited in Rome, at the instigation of the Jesuits. The Government of the Netherlands has giv en its negative to the vote of the Emperor of Austria, transmitted at the suggestion of Eng land, relative to the free navigation of the Rhine. 'l ive timely rains in Spain,%avc produced a fall of wheat which has given great joy to the ueoiile of Madrid. The Turkish accounts state that the attack of Col. Fabvier, with the regular Greek troops, upon Negropcnt, had totally failed, and the corps been almost entirely destroyed. The Greek loss is estimated at 1000 men, besides cannot), Sic. A treaty of Commerce has been concluded between Great Britain and Sweden, which af fords a fresh instance of the success of those principles so powerfully developed in Mr. : Huskisson’s memorable speech, to tiie na.iga- ( t on and commerce of the country. The following is the only information from j G reece;— Trimte, Jlpril 16.—A vessel arrived from Zan-[ • a after sixteen days passage, brings intelligence i • hat Ibrahim Pacha left a feeble garrison at j Missownghi, and has set out for the Mores, n ull the remainder ot his troops. 1 he Tuico J »vptun fleet has set sail for Napoli di Roma nia! Two frigates and two brigs of inis fleet attacked Miaulis* squadron on the 18th, which • hcv nut in the Archipelago. It appears that •he" -avrison and inhabitants of Missolonghi capable of bearing arms, within the last few .lav5, amounted altogether to 3,-00 men; but, • esides these, there were reckoned 1000 young v. omen, 500 Young men, between ten and eijgh ♦e,n years old, and 700 invalids and wounded. iV/thousand armed men, having m the midst of them, the women and children, made the;tor •feet the i\id; they were all slam, except about •brtv who were taken alive and made■ slav”; fhe other 1000 men who remained in the city, . assembled the TOO invalids togethce, with the women and children, in the church, which.they , blew up into Ihe air, and then proceeded to snare the fate of their compatriots, who tell in , combatting the enemy. I 41'he principal cause of this event is a-crtbed to a ruse of the Galio-Egyptians, who, accord ing to the account*of a Greek cnussar? taken by them placed 500 Albanians, bearing the Creek colours, on a height pointed out for .hat [ purpose, and who gave the unfortunate Misso* longhites the signal for the sortie. They dis covered iheir error too late; but seeing all hopes of safety lost, they set fire to a mine, which had been for a longtime prepared, and were blown up together with the enemy, which pressed them round on every side. Something Novel.—In addition to other cere monies which are to take place at Genova, N. Y. on the celebrat ion of the 4th of July, the Pal ladium, of that village, says, it is also proposed to have the steam boat Codorus there, which boat is now at Newtown, having navigated that branch of the Susquehannah thus far As she draws but six inches water, the commander proposes to transport her by land, on the route of the proposed Chemung Canal, a distance of only 18 miles, into the waters of the Seneca Lake. She can then pass on to Utica, Albany, and N\ York, and will be the first steam vessel that ever passed from the ocean into the mouth of the Susquehannah, thence, up the whole length of that mighty river, to its source—and, from there, into the waters ol Seneca, down which it will pass 40 miles, to Geneva, and, from thence, into the Grand Canal, and still on ward to the great lakes or the Hudson itself. From the Boston Patriot. The opposition must gtt a new manager at the head-press in Washington, or things will not go on ’veil. We cautioned the editor of the Tele graph, some time since, of the inexpediency of any reflections, direct or indirect, upon the old Hartford Convention party in New-England, as the most sturdy opponents to J Q. Adams, and consequently the Telegraph’s best friends are of this class of politicians. Hut disregarding our hint, thev keep up the attack upon this portion oftheir friends in Ncw-England, for the effect that may thereby be produced*™ the south and west. This is surely a mistaken policy. T hey had much better retain the support of the bit ter and uncompromising opponents to the pres ent administration ami to every thing else of a republican character, (ban run the chance of losing their support by exhibiting them in car ricature to make new converts. For the information of the Telegraph editor wc st 'te, that the individual who made the in decent remark about giving enough to buy Mr. Jefferson a halter, as quoted in the Telegraph, is amor.iy the few who opposed the election op Mr Adams, and among that still smaller num ber who make up what is termed the ‘•opposi tion” to the present republican administration of the National Government. Boston, July 3—On Friday the ship Henry arrived at Portsmouth, N If. from Liverpool, whence she sailed on the 27th May. 1 hr Cap tain brought no papers of a late date. 1 he E dhorsof the Journal give the following account of a huge newspaper, brought out by the ifetirj^ Wc received by the ship Henry, a copy 9 “The Atlas: A'General Newspaper and Journal of Literature. On the largest sheet ever print ed. On measuring this sheet, we find it in deed a giant among newspapers, being <15 by 32.} inches, (just double the size of the Journal.) 'The number wc have received is the commence ment ofth: publication, dated Sunday, May 2t, !82n. The imprint i% “London: printed and published for and by James Whiting, at the office of Whiting 8c Hranston, engravers and printers to IIis Majesty for the Prevention ol Forgery,” fHather an odd sounding title, we Yankees should say,] “Beaufort House, Beau fort Buildings, Strand.” It is‘ printed in 16 pages about the size of those in a common lu lio bible, and two numbers of it would contain as much matter, and cost as much for printing an equal number of copies, as the New Testa ment. If its purchasers read it through on ihe day of pTBiHcation, they must be expeditious a bout if, on, etyr,.borrow an hour or two from church riute. its content* arc a farrago of eve ry species of matter found in newspapers, and would create confusion dire among the ideas of any blockhead who should undertake to remem ber the whole. It is sold at one shilling ster ling. _ A SIXTH CONTINENT. An extraordinary phenomenon presented in the southern ocean, may render our settlements in N. South Wales of still more eminent inipor tance.—A sixth continent is in the very act of growth before our eyes! The Pacific is spotted with islands through the immense space of nearlv fifty degrees of longitude, and as many uf latitude. Every one of these islands seems to be merely a central spot for the formation of coral banks, which by a perpetual progress, are rising from the unfathomable depths of the sea The union of a few of these masses of .rock, shapes itself into an island; the seeds of plants are carried to it by birds or by the waves, and front the moment that it overtops the waters, it is covered with vegetation. The new Isbttd constitutes in its turn a centre of growWTy another circle. The great powers of nattFre appear to be still in peculiar activity in this re gion; and to her tardier recess she somcimes takes the assistance of the volcano and the earthquake From the south ot New Zealand to the north of the Sandwich Islands ihe. wa ters absolutely teem with those future scats of civilization. Still the coral insect, the diminu tivc builders of all these mighty piles, is at work: the ocean is intersected with myriads ol those lines of foundation; and when the rocky structure shall have excluded the sea, then wi.l come the dominion of' man. [ Monthly Review 2 character.—When I was a child, I saw the famous Sir Toby Butler, a favorite lawyer of his time, his oratorical powers being great; but he alwavs drank his bottle before he went to the courts. ‘ A cliant very solicitous about the suc cess of his cause, requested Sir 1 oby not to drink his accustomed bottle that morning. Sir Toby promised on his honor he would not He went to the court, pleaded, and gained a verdict The client met him, exulting in the success ot c: advice; when, to his astonishment,Sir 1 ob> acsurcd him if he had n it taken his bottle, he should have lost the cause. “But your promise, Sir ruby?” “I kept it faithfully and honoura bly 1 did not drink a drop—I poured my bottle of claret into a wheaten loaf and ate it. So I had iny bottle-, you your verdict, and 1 am man of my vtoxd.u-Beeotteetions ofO Lufe. DOMESTIC SUMMARY. ^ew-Orleans papers to the 15th ult. have been received in New-York. They contain Vera Cruz dates of the 28th May. Commo dore Porter had gone to Mexico; and the Mexi can vessels were very destitute of seamen. Among the passengers in a vessel which late ly arrived at Boston from Liverpool, was an Englishman who was a soldier in the army which attarked Washington, and in that which attacked New-Orleans. Spurious Money —The editor of the Center ville Times, cautions the public against receiv ing notes of 85 of the Union Bank of George town, (D. C.) letter B. It is supposed that many of the above notes are now in circula tion; they are of a specious appearance, and unless closely examined will pass without de tection. The contracts for the eastern section of the Pennsylvania canal have been given out—a* much below the estimate of the engineer, we understand, as 40 per cent. The principal con tractors are from New-York. 1 he work will be commenced forthwith. V. S. The New-York papers, published on the morning of the 4th July, are chiefly occupied with’the details of the intended celebration of the National Anniversary. On the evening of the 3d, one of the steamboats from Albany ar rived with about 450 passengers, and another from Philadelphia with nearly 500. The Boston Evening Gazette of Saturday says—“We learn by a gentleman from Lowell, that the ‘Old Satinet Factory,’ so called, was entirely destroyed by fire this morning, togeth er with about 5510,000 amount tof machinery. The fire was fi> st discovered about 2 o’clock, between the first and second story. No fire had been made in the building for some time previous.
