STEAM CARRIAGES.
Experimental Journey, by Messrs. Oeleaiti!
IF. Ji. Summers—Monday this strain caniage
passed through Newberry from Southampton to
Oxford: it proceeded along the streets at a stea
dy pace, attended by a large contout-e of per
sons. At the Chequers Inn, Speenhamland. i'
stopped to take in water and coke; the supph of
water required was about one hundred buckets.
When starting, the coach went off witn very con
siderable speed, and soon left all the pedestrians
far behind.
We understand Messrs. Ogle &. Summers have
been occupied almost tour years in the experi
ments, and have expended £30,000 in bringing
their invention to perfection, or rather to that
stats which leaves only some trilling minor de
tails to be worked out. The chief desideratum
in locomotive vehicles and vessels (in mines in
our colonies) is a safe and efficient mode of gene
rating steam on scientific principles. Messrs.
Ogle &. Summers have completely mastered that
most difficult point. Their boiler contains the
greatest possible beating surface tn the feast pos
sible space, when in combination with the strong
er mechanical form. Their boiler consists of nu
merous sections, having sufficient connection
with each other, constructed ot cylinders
with air tubes within each, Branding verb al

face of the cylinders and the inner surface of
the air tube. They allow 13 superficial feet to
the hor^e power, and tin* boiler m their vehicle

nineteen millions of pounds weight tire pressing

The form of the carriage is elegant, lemerka
biv commodious, and, "c understand. easier
than anv othei vehicle. Ir differs from the com
mon carnage chiefly in its height, and the cum
brous appeal ante uf the boiler, which is placed
behind, and beyond is die blowing machine.—
Owing to the heavy iron woik being at the lower
nart of the vehicle, au upset i* almost impossible.
On Monday morning this carriage left Mil
brook, near Southampton, with 23 persons and
their lu,r,,age and pioceeded to Oxford. 1 iie
I first l /"’miles, celebrated for the lulls, were
deaicd in one hour and ten minutes, without
pressing the vehicle to its speed. The coach
| then proceeded towards Whitechurh with great
vclocitv; but before it reached Sutton Shotney,
it was found that the coke, which had been sent
to different stations, consisted of little bags in
j stead of sacks, and therefore, fuel was necessa
I nl\ waited for, or the whole distance would have
| been cleared in less than five hours. The road
i is known to be very hilly and rough, and to be
I perhaps the most trving which a steam-coach
could b“ run on. Notwithstanding, the loftiest
j hill* were surmounted with the greatest facility;
> that from Wlutechurch was ascended at full ten
1 m»Vs an hour. At intervals, the coke being
consumed, cals were used, which caused u
! stream of smoke; but when eke is burnt there
is no appearance of smoke. 1 he want of cuke,
and the illness of Mr. Summers induced the
party to stop at Abington, having cleared up

with fuel, ami which speed could have been con
siderably accelerated. The strength of the nu

er, was completely proved by the luct, ilut at
'the summit of aveiv long and steep hill, the
drag-chain fai ed, and the vehicle rushed forward
and attained the terrific speed of fifty miles an
I hour, but was steered with accura v and safety.

In this experiment there has been no avoiding
! of difficulties; a hillv, rnigh and winding roau
; has been selected, and traversed with safety and
velocity. The boiler is found to be most e{fi
1 cicnt, and perfectly tight; the cylinders large
enough; the tnacs.inerv so well put together that
even a rush of fifty miles an hour has not started
one bolt, nor broken a single screw; the springs
of the carriage hotly have been strengthened, as
so many persons clambered on it as to overweigh
tuetn. Every where the travellers were well and
kindlv received, and willingly supplied with wa
ter. The vehicle entered Oxford in fine style,
ascending, at about eight miles an hour, St. Al
date's, and turned into the gateway of the Star
