CARRIERS’ ADDRESS TO THE PATRONS OF THE ALEXANDRIA GAZETTE, JANUARY 1, 1833. 1. As wave succeeds to wave upon the deep, The last one present as the former dies; So following on in swift succession sleep, The rolling years as other years arise, And only one we dare to call our own: The fleeting present—that but lent awhile To use for virtuous ends, or to atone For unrepented sins and secret guile: The year so lent us. Reason says—“ Improve!” Man’s highest gratitude for boundless Love. 2. Sweet is the dawning of a New-born Year, And sweet the pealing Anthem of the free, And sweet the ’gratulations that we hear— “ Happy AVer Year! ana many mure to thee!” Oh! if there be a period of delight— Of fond anticipation, and of thought Reverting to the past—or winged for flight, The muse’s inclinations should be brought, It is that period standing as a Key, Binding tne past with that which is to be! 3. The world is ours, the gift of a Supreme, Stored with all things his creatures can enjoy, And but for man himself, no fairy dream Could rival earth’s reality of joy: Freedom would dwell, where Slavery clanks her chains— Contentment smile, where misery abounds— Feeling exist, where avarice counts its gains, And virtue reign where shameless vice resounds; Linds where th< men are brave and maidens fair •\pi*i!r«»d Ambition makes Omircssion 8 lair. % 4. Is proof required that crime and tyranny Lord it high-handed o’er the human race? Or that e’en Christians hesitate to be The wicked a«e..u tf ir own disgrace? Is it required to shew the cti«»soii brand Wet with the blood of poor unfortunates, Or to hold up the hypocrite whose hand Rests on that Bible of whose truths he prates? Is it required to prove that such things are?— Then look to Poland, and the fiendish Czar! 5. Oh! if there be on earth a damning deed, Sufficient to destroy th’ immortal soul— It is to make a righteous nation bleed; To smite a brother as is smote each Pole; To drive by cruelty a people wild, To desolate their dearest native plains, To separate the parent and the child, And load the living thousands with his chains; Such deeds, Oh! Nicholas! are thine!!! and fame, With lasting Infamy will brand thy name! 0 Fame, in recording lives of mortal men, The savage spoiler with the humble good, Amid the ceaseless drudgery ol her pen, Will sometimes hail the brightly beaming Hood Of talent and of virtue,—and in none Purer or brighter has it late been seen, Than in the Gem of Scotland!—there it shone With vivid splendor on Romance’s green; And while Time is—Scoit’s works of “ IFa verly” Shall live in interest and morality! 7. And buried in the bosoms of the free Is He, our nvn, the patriot and ttiesagc, Who true, firm, honest, bent no servile knee, Nor ceased ’till death, t’ embellish Freedom’s page. Carroll! the aged Signer and the lost Of those brave Spirits who in perils’ hour, . Heedless of Despotism’s aiming blast Opposed with life aud fortune Britain’s pow’r; ! And gave unto the world the classic scroll, All must admire so long as Ages roll. 8. The tear of gratitude is amply due To worth departed; and tjje spot how dear, Where, henceforth hidden from all human view, Sleeps the loved Scholar, Patriot and Seer! But whilst we mourn the still unconscious dead, Whose race of active usefulness is o’er— With lively joy we hail the living tr<*ad Of Native Genius on Columbia’s shore' And in each branch of Literature, we see The march of Talent to celebrity! 9. To strangers passing we might point with pride To men whose names would grace—aye, any lan^; Adams and Irvino, ranging side by side, Whose pow’rs the heights of Elegance com mand; ^ Cooper, at home upon arirfndian soil, Or where the “ Hover” ploughs the briny sea; Willis and Halleck, Sprague and Paulding, while A fair Sioocrmt glows with sympathy: Nor these alone—for kindred minds pervade Tb’ Atlantic citjf and toe Forest shade, 10. “ Our Country!” by that spell-word may we stand,. Firm and unshaken as our native hills; And while Peace, Union, Freedom bless the land, And moral Virtue wholesome truth instills, We may the glad’ning prospect entertain Of handing downwards to posterity Each fertile vale and wide extended plain As we now hold them from our Fatners—free! “Our Country!” this ’tis constitutes our All— We stand, united J—if divided, fall!
