. bt Thelluson as having taken place in Vif “nil, hud »»«»lt io ever7 P°*?,b‘e ,i«hltJ w* “"I !lrceive in what manner it is at all affected Kv aor of the statutes referred to. The only lint in which Thelluson’a case differs from a % which would come precisely under the terms f the law as we have above stated it, is in this, Lt the estates are vested in trustees who are lirected to accumulate the profits until the ex -iration of the lives upon which the Executory Lvise is to vest—and then dispose of them as •rovulcd for. A similar direction as to the ac cumulation of the profits cannot now, owing to !he Stat. 39 & 40 Geo. 3, be made in England, for a longer period than 21 years after thedeath the cantor; while in such a case as Thellu " »t it is estimated that 70 years will elapse be fore the devise will vest in possession. This mtute, however, would not operate to prevent * executory devise which was not to vest till a|,er a life or lives in being, 21 years and 9 months, where the intermediate profits were not greeted to accumulate. This statute, as before remarked, has not been re-enacted in Virginia, and not only would such a devise without, but one jril/i a direction as to the accumulation of the rolits, be there valid. 1 had intended making ' me remarks on the attempt which has been made in Parliament to alter the dispositions of Thelluson’* will; but this communication is al ready too long and technical to interest your ge uefaf readers.___ *• S* [■communicated. J Mr. Snowden:—l have read in a late number of the Gazette (a borrowed one) an editorial ar ticle. which denounces, in no measured terms, Newspaper borrowers, or common pests, as you * pleased to term them; and after giving them fiuite a sharp rebuke for their unblushing pestera lion of your subscribers, you proceed to say— “ vet perhaps subscribe for papers elsewhere;— such men are not good citizens or just men. Your humble corre>pondeiit subscribes for a pa per elsewhere, and does not at present subscribe to the Gazette, yet borrows and reads it nearly eveiv day, and of course falls within the range of your denouncement. The state of the case is this: I read my neighbor’s paper, and my neighbor reads my paper. They are separately »>ur own property: and, without designing any disrespect whatever to the ability or merits of the Gazette, I am free to say, as my firm belief, mV frii-tul h.is no rause to comnlain: and belore 1 proceed any further, I will ask you, is not tins precisely your own course with every exchange paper received at your office? \\ hy then de nounce others for what you daily practise your sell? Your occupation does not change the right nr the piinciple; and, so far as I am implicated, I can see no injustice about it. 1 have, first to last, heard much said about the influence and dictation of the press; and-1 mete out to you full measure for your industry, inde pendence, and thriving abilities; yet l hope to be excused—for such doctrine 1 do not entertain.— I now speak in reference to the press generally. Nevertheless, as rapid channels of current and other useful information of the day, they are va luable; and, when conducted with talents and in dustry, thev are much more so. Yet, with all this, much depends upon the support and patrou age of a generous public. But iu all matters of this sort, 1 claim the right to be as free as the air we breathe to jodge for myself. As to •» good citizens,” there are so many pre requisite (omission and-commission) in order to constitute the term “ good,” that l will dis pense with the enumeration, lest I might tire you, tor whom l entertain no other feeling but fiiend ship. But to the matter which 1 allude to, 1 do think you have been ungenerous 7 BERNARD. T“ Bernard,” though a constant “ borrower,” is welcome to a place in our columns, if it were only for the novelty of the thing; for we suppose that it is about the first time that any one ever undertook seriously to defend such a practice.— If any man can delude himself, by such argu ments as those used above, into a belief that he is right in refusing to encourage an establishment at home, which requires the outlay of hundreds of dollars weekly and thousands yearly—which supports the honest and indus'rious in its seve i.a-_J_.nil whii-h even “ Ber nard*’ is kind enough to say, »® conducted with ‘•industry &c. *c,” and to spend his money upon those who bring him the news front abroad, and which is used abroad when occasioo re quires, to the injury of the community in which he lives, he is at perfect liberty to do •o. The newspaper exchange that u:e carry on, as a part of our business, for which an ex press law has been made,—-and which is done for the benefit of the people throughout the land, —is a different thing from newspaper borrowing, as must be evident. It is different from the newspaper exchange business conducted by “ Bernard,” which, if carried into practice ge nerally, would leave the smaller towns and ci ties without any presess “ to speak for them be fore the world.” He hope however, before long, to have “ Bernard” down on our list, and then ht, too, will join with us in condemning the newspaper borrowers, j _ New York Consolidated Lottery, Extra ClaM* No. 23 fur 1833. i'o be drawn in New York on Wedj£.d^August 14 HIGHEST PRIZE Tickets *4; halves 2 00} quarters 1 00.
