Erratum.—In the propositiou to amend the ,ew Code of Laws for the District, offered by ii a Subscriber,” in yesterday’s Gazette, read— ii Each Justice to receive a salary and no fees,” instead of “ to receive fees.” We conclude, to-day, the publication of Mr. Webster’s Report from the Committee on Fi nance on the Removal of the Deposites. We have read it with attention, and regard it as one of the most triumphant arguments ever brought under our notice. It utterly demolishes the rea sons of the Secretary of the Treasury. It leaves i him not an inch of ground to stand on. For i ihe correctness of this opinion we appeal to an i unprejudiced public. r The February number of Mr. Homan’s Mili tary and Naval Magazine, supports the now es tablished character of the work for interest and usefulness.__ The President’s next Levee will be Thursday week, instead of Thursday next, as was an nounced in this paper a few days ago. Jtfr. Beale, the Representative from the She nandoah district, ought to make his best bow to the Globe for the kind and gracious manner in which he is spoken of by that print. If Mr Beale represents a district in favor of the Re moval of the Deposites, we verily believe he stands alone in Virginia. The maiden effort of Mr. King (of Georgia) in the Senate, on Mr. Clay’s motion for inquir. ing Into the expediency of extending the cre dit on Revenue Bonds, was a plain, sensible speech, free from attempts at display, and limit ed entirely to commercial topics. We were pleased to see that Mr. Webster, in reply, con gratulated the Senate on the accession to its * umber of a gentleman of so much good sense aad practical talent as the Senator from Geor gia. __ We have an excellent article from the New York Commercial on nana, snowing uie s>cmi mentsof the Patres Conscripti Republica, as to the establishmenUof a national bank. We will give it the first opportunity. A Massachusetts paper states that Mr. Q,uin cy will probably retire from the Presidency of Harvard University._ The Pendleton (South Carolina) Messenger, states that Mr. McDuffie intends to retire from Congress after the expiration of his present term, and intimates, that it will be for the pur pose of serving the State as her Chief Magis trate. Salina Bank Robber.—Captain Chase, of the ship Calumet, from Cadiz, informs, that the young gentleman who robbed the Salina Bank last summer of a considerable sum of money, ar rived at Cadiz in the brig Omega, from Philadel phia, and was immediately arrested by the Con sul. He was left in prison when the C. sailed, on the 18th Dec. Zerah Colburn.—From a letter in the Annals of Education we learn that this singular indivi dual, the wonder of a past period, is now settled as a clergyman in Lebanon, N. H. He says My impression ever has been, that if I had continued in the practice of my calculating fa culty, I should have continued to progress, per. haps to an incredible extent. It was not long af ter I gave up public exhibition, before 1 had lost materially in point of readiness. Yet, though nearly twenty years have elapsed, I do not know but I am now as well able to solve ques tions, as I was only six or eight months after I had thus retired.” Mr. Colburn expresses a wish to obtain a situation which would afford him occasion for exercising his ancient faculty in die use of figures. Ohio Legislature.—Our latest intelligence from Columbus is to Friday Jan. 31. After much turmoil, all the State Bank questions, in both Houses, have been finally disposed of, by postponement beyond the Session. We understand that the Committee appoint ed at the meeting at the Exchange on the 6th hist, to present the memorial of the Citizens to Congress, proceed to Washington this morning. [Balt. Amer. Consumption of Cotton.—It appears fiom state ments contained in an article on the British Cotton Manufacture, in the last number of the Edinburgh Review, that the quantity of cotton imported into Great Britian has been nearly or quite doubled within the last twelve years. In 1820 the amount was upwards of 150,000,000 pounds* in 1831 more than 273,000,000. There are now more than a million and a half of the population of Great Britian depen dant for subsistence upon employment in the cotton factories; and this branch of industry is considered in as secure and prosperous a condi tion as it ever has been. Within the same peri od, as great a relative increase, if not a much greater, has taken place in the manufacture of cotton in this country. The amount now con sumed is about 40 millions of pounds per annum. Among the numerous deaths announced by the late arrivals is that of Prince Esterhazy, the father of the Austrian Ambassador at the Court of St. James. He was deemed the richest man in Europe—and yet his prodigality is such that his vast estates were placed under sequestration for the benefit of his creditors. It is supposed that the principal heir, Prince Paul Esterhazy will resign his office as ambassador, for the pur pose of attending to his private business. [Ar. y. Com. Periodical Authorship.—There is no labor more destructive to health than that of periodi cal literature, and in no species of mental ap plication, or even of manual employment, is the wear and tear of body so early and so severe ly felt. The readers of those light articles which appear to cost so little labor in the various pub lications of the day, are little aware how many constitutions are broken down in the service of their literary taste.—Dr. Johnson. Earthquake.—On Wednesday night last, at about half past 10 o’clock, says the Columbia (Pa.) Star of the 8th instant, a shock of an earthquake was felt in this place. It was ac companied by a low rumbling noise, which ma ny, at the moment, thought was occasioned by the passing of a stage along the street. Crock ery and other articles on shelves were noticed to shake very considerably. Its duration could not have exceeded twelve seconds. We have heard it remarked by a number who were out of doors at the time, that there was a great change in the atmosphere immediately before the shaking—it being so hot and oppres sive, as to render it difficult to breathe. The shock was said to be the most violent ever ex perienced in this county. Lancaster, and other places as far as heard from, were similarly visited. m SHIP NEWS. jjE PORT OF ALEXANDRIA, D. C.
