to Sault St. Mary. The duplicate forwarded through the Canada Post Offices had been le ceived at Sault St. Mary’s. _ At the late election in Worcester District, Massachusetts, for a member of Congress in the place of Mr. Davis, chosen Governor of the State, the whole number of votes was 5470, whereof Governor Lincoln had 4226. The young men of Boston have had a meet ing, to consider the operation of executive hos tilTties to the United States Bank. They adopt ed a memorial, and are now procuring signa tures thereto._ From St. Croix.—Capt. Robbins, of the The tish, arrived at New York, from St. Croix, states that it has‘been very sickly, for the last two months at St. Ooix, of the W est India fe ver, but was becoming more healthy when he left. Capt. Lee, of the brig Shepherdess died in January; a cooper named M’Arthur, of New York; two men be>ongingto the Thetis, named Elisha White and Amuriah Carter, and a sea man of the Shepherdess, and several others were taken off. Trouble in Martinique.—Captain Dewing, of brig Romp, from Point Petre, Guadaloupe, in forms the Editor of the Salem Mercury, that a serious disturbance took place in the island of Martinique in the latter part of December. A number of persons, principally multatoes, took up arms at Trinity in opposition to the Govern ment. The insurrection sprekd to St. Pierres^ and caused the greatest alarm. The Governor called upon the militia, but not one in twenty would come out to oppose the insurgents. It was therefore found necessary to call out the royal troops, upon whose appearance the insur gents dispersed, and the revolt was quelled with out bloodshed Eighty persons concerned in the revolt had been arrested. Destructive Fire at Vicksburg.—The New Or leans Advertiser of the 14th ult. says: “ We learn from the clerk of the steamer Farmer, ar rived last evening from Vicksburg, that a large fire occurred at that place on the 10th inst., at 3 o’clock, A. M. VYTe did not ascertain particu lars, but were informed that the Stores of Messrs. M. & A. Levy, J. & J. Lane, and Gilmore and Co., were totally destroyed—not even books and papers saved.” A war between Great Britain and France on the one part, and Russia on the other, arising out of the relations existing between Russia and the Ot toman Porte, appears to be a subject of general speculation in the British journals. The Glas gow Herald has the following remarks on the probable consequences of such a rupture with regard to the United States. T wenty years ago it would have been thought of little importance what part our country might take, or in how great a degree its interests might be endanger ed or outraged:— Balt. Oaz. “ Should we go to war with Russia, there is too much reason to apprehend that hostilities betwixt this country and the United States will be the consequence. Our newspaper press, par ticularly the Liberal and Ministerial portion of it is so outrageously abusive of the Emperor Nich olas, that, with the common feelings of humanity, he must desire to he revenged upon us; but he is well aware that if we were to blockade his Bal tic ports, and prevent the produce of the estates of his nobles from getting to market, there would arise a spirit of discontent in Russia which would he in all likelihood fatal to him.— Accordingly, therefore, it is understood that in contemplation of the probability of a war with Great Britain, the Emperor of Russia has made arrangements with the Americans by which they are to carry the whole of Russian produce intended for foreign markets in their ships, aud hence will arise the old contest as to neutral bot toms making neutral goods, and being exemp ted from the right of search, which discussion will most probably lead us to a war with the United States.” •\ Y *vVu ‘bifc t atm t »r ^a\e. t he subscriber will sell his highly improv icdand vajua‘h Farm cs'led ROSE-HILL, _,in the County of Fairfax, f >u miles and a half from Alexandria, a/:d ten a half from the Citv of Washington, in a pleasant and agreeable neighbor hood, containing 3 9 4 ACRES.
