PHILOCLES. 4lesnndria, April 26, 1S34. TO THE PUBLIC. I intended, on Saturday, to have said what I '/all say to-day, but was prevented by indispo se reply made to my statement, in contra liction of an extract of a letter which appeared in the Ricmond Enquirer, affirming that “ I Lid on the authority of the Han. Henry Clay, . Jhat’the Bank of Virginia had failed,” in which ^extract” not one word was uttered about a * report” affords the least consolation to any human being, I would not willingly remove so *.‘eap a balm to a wounded conscience. The fetter to the Cashier of the Bank of Virginia, I had nothin", and have nothing, to do with—it ms sufficient for my purpose to show that the statement that 44 I asserted, on the authority of [lie Hon. Henry Clay, that the Bank of Virginia had failed,” was entirely erroneous^ and I am I) eased to learn that the citizens of Richmond, even before my publication appeared there, treated the “ extract” as it dese^ed to be treated I have but one wrord more to say, and then shall close the subject, as doubtless there is a friend of mine who must, by this time, be quite sick of it, and 1 desire not to give him any additional pain to that which he must have suffered the past week. Men may sometimes be provoked into references to private or personal matters. It would require strong provocation to induce I me to stoop to this course. To do so, would be contrary to my character and disposition. In my publication of last Tuesday, I intended, whilst proving to the public that I never said or lllllUlUtVU) V4« Uiv, UUU1UI lijr VI HIV IIVU* «*VUi J Clay, that the Bank of Virginia had failed,” to offer a rebuke to officiousness on the part of an office-holder who lived, politically speaking, “ in a glass house, which I, or any other man, might, with the sling of a pebble, shiver to pieces.” I doubt, also, whether a self-constituted Goliath will be recognized as a Champion, merely be cause he has met with a discomfiture. • EDGAR SNOWDEN. Alexandria, April 28, 1S34. Major Downing and Mr. Van Buren; or “Dia mond cut diamond.”—We understand there was a warm confab a few days ago at Washington, between Major Downing and Mr. Van Buren, oo the subject of banks and banking, at the din ner table at the White House. Major Downing said, that “a bank jist like the United States Bank, could do more good to the country, and to trade, that any 50 State banks could, if all their capital united was as much agin as the I foiled States Bank”—this he said with a know ing kind of look; but some folks at the table gave Mr. Van Buren a wink, and he thought loo that the Major, for once, had exposed him self too much, as it had been said of him he ne ver made an assertion, and in fact never laugh ed without having good reason and law on his side. Mr. Van Buren thinking the Major had made rather too wild an assertion, took him up, and asked him if 50 banks, just like the Regency Bank at Albany, and Safety Fund Banks too, whose capital was greater than the United States Bank; and \f they were all pledged to each other, and agreed to stand by each other, couid’nfc do more good for the people and the country, in squally times, than one bank like tie United States Bank with all its branches. The Major brightened up in a minute; and *ay$he, “if that is your notion, Mr. Van Buren, f3like to hear you say so.” “ Well,” says Mr. Mr.Van Buren, “I don’t care about saying so; tilt 1 should like to have you show why it is not so.” %* Then,” says the Major, “ I’ll give you ®y notions. You have been across the ocean, taint you? well, if I remember rightly, you went tiaNew York packet, and they are about 500 has. Now suppose I was to hitch together 50 sniall craft, of twenty tons each, and tie ’em all atogether as strong as ropes and chains could it; then there would be one thousand tons. Now which would you feel safest on board on? "".suppose you want to go from New York, Providence, round Point Judy, which plan would you take—go on board old Capt. Bun ***** boat, or on board a raft of small steam &H lash’d together? 'Veil,” says Mr. Van Buren, “if you mean j e to answer you, Major, 1 must beg to be ex ised; for it requires a good deal of considera “ Very well,” said the Major, “ I am not Particular; but after you have considered on’t \ir v’ ta^e care y°u commit yourself.” r- Van Buren looked at the Gineral, and the ’^eral he shook his head, and began to laugh; he^s he, “the Major beats all natur, don’t aauor All i-ru-rtfa o , 1 T ' “ P,1'J)rCle*~“-The tory presses are felicitating the ^l,c upon the recent importation of specie into i!>Un!ry fforo abroad, which they affect to in 01\e *end to remove the embarrassments »ha<yl comm*rcial operations. Ah! said the other, and where is he gone to? To Buncomb, N. Carolina, said the Kentuckian. This drew up Mr. Brown, who took the occa sion to remark, that inasmuch as Mr. Clay and Mr. Calhoun were found acting together, on the subject of the removal of the deposites, he took ! it for granted that his Satanic Majesty had de serted Buncomb, and accomplished the miracle of uniting those gentlemen on this measure, as • nothing less than his power could accomplish it. i There are those who will concur with the ho norable Senator in this; and what is it? It was the act of seizing upon the public treasure, in violation of law, that induced Mr. Calhoun and Mr. Clay to unite in its condemnation. We have understood that the President believes that he was imspired to do that act. Does Mr. Brown mean to say that he who, ha ving been driven out of Kentucky, and retreat ed to Buncomb, has taken up his residence in the White House? Are we to attribute the re moval of the deposites, the retreat of Major Jack Downing, and the Protest, to that cause? Telegraph. DIED,.
