WHITE. • [COMMUNICATED.] I Mr. Snowden:—I read in your paper of last week a communication signed “ A Reclaimed Drunkard,” who would fain make it appear, that the object of his communication was to make known to the public the happy effectswhieh “ the Temperance Society” has wrought upon him. Modesty, if the “ reclaimed” gentleman possessed any, would have induced him to re frain at least from publicly notifying the people of his regeneration and reform; and in his own heart, he cannot but find condemnation, if we are to judge from the tenor of his communica tion. Now, Mr. Editor, as the gentleman has taken the liberty of telling to the world that he has reformed, I hope he will also favor us with his name, as the humble and repentant sinner should do; and let the community be the judges of his reformed habits—and not himself to sing his own praises. I would respectfully remind this self-dubbed “Reclaimed Drunkard,” as he styles himself, of the old maxim:—“ Self-praise is no recommendation.” And since the gentle man seems so desirous of recommending the “ Temperance cause to the young men of this town,” I would say to him, “ Take the mote first out of thine own eye, so that thou mayst see clear to take it out of others’.” Time, the great judge of events, will prove to us whether this change has been produced, and whether the laws of this holy cause have been obeyed.— This brief notice of his recantation I am in duced to make at the solicitation of several young gentlemen who have lately become mem bers of the “Alexandria Temperance Society,” —who, notwithstanding their well known tem perate and careful habits, have been individual ly identified with this Pharisaical penitent. Yours. Briareus. November 24. MARRIED, On Friday evening last, by the Rev. C. A. C. The friends of the deceased are respectfully invited to her funeral, from the residence of her lather on King street, at 11 o’clock, on Thursday morn in*?. a few days the Session of Congress will commence. Its duration, by the Constitution, will be limited to the 4th of March next. Though brief, it will, doubtless, be one of much interest. The peculiar political condition of the country, and the state of parties, ‘'ill more than makeup for the absence of any exciting matters of mere legislation. During the Session we will exert ourselves to i give our readers the earliest and most authentic intelligence from the 6>eut of Govei nment. The Alexandria Gazette will contain, daily, a sum mary of the proceedings of < 'ongress ol the day previous, prepared expressly for its columns.— We design to keep a faithlul and impartial re cord of the debates that may take place in both . houses; and, for this purpose, shall always give, ( at least, one or two of the principal speeches on both sides, on nil questions of importance. We shall have, likewise, the advantage of Correspondents from Washington, whose letters will give the current news of the Metropolis.— Our own personal attendance, as ofien as we can. at Congress, will also enable us to collect ail of interest that transpires. Thus, without bu/thening our columns, or an noying our readers with all that is said and done in Congress on every subject, private and pub lic, we hope to present them with an account of every thing useful or interesting. In the mean time we shall not remit our exer tions to make the Gazette a channel for con veying to its readers the earliest news foreign anil domestic. with the Literary, Political, and Commercial intelligence of the day; so that, with out confining its columns to any particular sub ject or subjects, to the exclusion of others, it may always be referred to for that information which intelligent citizens ought to expect from a news paper. _ __ jfe SHIP NEWS.
