Communications-__ ^oTtHE EDITOR OF THE ALEXANDRIA GAZETTE. Upon looking over the columns ct your paper of the 8th instant, I was struck with surprise to perceive an aiticle over, the signature of a Prince William Whig; advocating in unmeasured terms the re flection of Major Charles Hunton to our State Senate, a man whose uncompro mising, thorough going, and whole hog adherence to the former and present dy nasty'is proverbial. This ci-devant de mocrat, and soi-disant Whig, it would seem, builds his argument in favour ot the Major entirely upon his ami&t le, honorable and uncompromising qualities, as if bis opponent were devoid of the for mer attributes which do credit to both, and as il the latter quality should prove a passport for the Major to the good graces and suffrages of his political ad versaries. With this “most lame and impotent conclusion” the Prince Wil liam Whig, if such an anomaly can exist, under the assumed title, pronounces his firm conviction of the futlity of opposi tion, and his firmer determination of supporting his views by apostacy from his adopted party. In a lime like this when our country most needs our aid, to falter in our course, is down-right treason: but if consistency and patriotism have no charms for such as the Prince William Whig—1 Let them depart;” “We would not tote in that man’s com pany” '“That fears his fellowship to rule with US. Though for years we have remained in the minority, thanks to the gradual dawn of reason and reflecvon, and the glaring developments of corruption, our ranks are now swelling with the indig nant dupes of lalse promises, and the ea-1 ger advocates of reform. Each day some new accession to our lines denotes the vigor with which every inch of ground will be contested and the daring with which each redoubt will be stormed. In comparing the merits of the candi- j dates now before the people, it gives me pleasure to acquiesce entirely in the just ness of those attributes ascribed to Ma jor Hunton, whilst on the good old max im of “Sauce lor the Goose, Sauce for the Gander,” I claim the same conces sions to James French Esq., the \\ big opponent of Major Hunton, who lor amia bility, independence ol sentiment, and respectability of talents, is no less deserv ing ol the support and confidence of the people. The idea that a ‘Prince William Whig’ has of the political tenets ol his party are it seems of a non-descript nature, if we should judge from the airy line ol dis tinction he endeavors to make appear aslhd only barrier between himself and Mai or Hunton: and I think it he were to J 9 define his own posi'ion instead of being classed with the Whigs or messing with the loco focos, he would appear “a set tin on a rail.” Now all we ask of these ! bare-legged gentry is to “hang out their banner on the outward wall,” and in their own propria persona wage an honorable war. We want no assumptions of false names and titles, nor any profession of relationship from those who in the same moment avow their opposition to our men ami their acquiescence in our mea- , sures. We want no allies who are not wiliing to enter w ith us shoulder to shoul der in the breach, and we unhesitating ly disdain all connection or fellowship with the vacillating few whose motto is ‘bun with the hare and hunt with the hounds.” The proper Whigs of w hich “a Prir.ce William Ditto” speaks as having supported and asstili determined to sup port a genuine “collar man” are men of his own calibre, wandering loafers, whose 0 erratic notions of party always lead them tothQcrib. The Whig party ‘proper* ack nowledges no such member,; its motto is “There are no tricks in plain and sim . pie faith; “But hollow men, like horses hot at hand, “Make gallant show and promise of their mettle; “But \*hen they should endure the b'oody spear, “They fail tru-ir crests, and, like de ceitful jades, ‘ Sink in the tiial.” We have no fears of defeat; ai1 we ask is union and energy in our ranks and sue cess will settle on our banner. Let each man's watch-word be “reform ” and each man’s assurance in discharging the duty incumbent on him at the approaching elections, that he who serves his coun try best, best serves himself, and all is sale. TERRAPIN. Billy Whack, P. W. Co. Va , Feb 10. TO THE EDITOR OK THE nLEXA.NDfUA GAZETTE. 1 know it is but necessary to request a tittle space in your excellent paper, to have granted the privilege .of culling the attention of the magistracy of the State and District, to a condition of things, that lam sine none are yet aware of—lew even suspect in its actual extent—and when known can but claim their immedi ate vigilance, as well as that of all good men, whether they are or not charged with the execution of the laws. Cjicymsiaoces lately rendered it ne cessary for me to order out a Patrol in my neighborhood, and w hich be^ng on the very border of the District of Colum bia, contains probably fewer slaves, and not more Iree negroes than any other of like extent, between the Blue Ridge and Chesapeake Bay. Accidental informa tion caused ibeir particular attention to be directed to the seizure of guns in the possession of these classes of people, ami the result o! only four days ot their ope rations, in a space of not more than five miles by four square, was the seizure or surrender by slaves and free negroes of twenty-five guns: All muskets but four _every one tit for use, and with two or three exceptions, in entirely good or der. These, are certainly twice, perhaps three times, as many firelocks, as were then in tne possession of the white popu lation within the same space. From evi dence that does not admit o( a rational doubt,I do not hesitate tosay, that the guns thus secured, w ere not more than one hall ; the number, that was actually held by these classes of people in my immediate neighborhood, when this search com- j menced; the residue, having been since | secreted for them by white men, base enough to conceal them, or carried a cross the District Line lor safe-keeping 1 have therefore, particularly called the attention of your worthy Mayor to this state of things—and afforded an oppor tunity for a thorough search, before ma king these (acts public; which I now do, as the only ready and certain, means awakening general attention—bu', not for the purpose of creating the slightest alarm; for In the present instance 1 cer tainly do not believe, there was any ground for even the. slightest—except, as as to.the safety of our Hogs and Sheep. But, it did seem to be a con dition of things, so peculiarly impro per in our social state, and so probably existing in other places, as well as here abouts, that having thus come under my especial observation, it was my duty (af ter having secured all I could, in my own vicinity) to make it known, for the bene fit of the community at large. I will also add, that our investigations have unmasked a class of w hite men, long suspected, who have as far as they dar ed, not only thrown every obstacle in the way of enforcing the laws—but have done every thing in their power to evade their provisions—to secrete the guns, and screen the guilty from punishment. 1 tr ust, we shail yet be able to obtain sufficient evidence lor their conviction, even before a Legal Tribunal; more than enough, has been had to hold them up to the pepetual arid most merited execra tion of a long plundered and insulted community. 1 call the attention of all respectable citizens to a similar class elsewhere.
