Ot course they contain no news that we have not had already, but they furnish a number of items which are somewhat interesting* The English at Macao do not seem to have been aware of the appointment of Sir Henry Pottinger as plenipotentiary, lor his name is not at all mentioned. Ad vices from Calcutta to the 23th of April had been been received. Great preparations were going on there lor a second expedition against China, among which are mentioned the purchase.of a steam er. and t fie presence of two others, supposed to he destined for ( Inna. The British troops and ships had all lelt Canton and rente 1 to Hong Kong, except the Herald and Calliope, which were lying at \Y ha tnpoa. Captain Elliot had issued fjuite a batch of proclamations—one cautioning British vessels not to enter the river under present circum stances, hut proceed to 1 long Kong;and threat II mug the Chinese with another blockade ol Canton should any attempt he made to ob struct me freedom of trade with Hong Kong. Another to the people of Canton, urging them to expel the Imperial commissioners and i the Tartar troops, w lth a threat that il these : troops and commissioner.-' had not lelt the city ! within twelve hours, tiie British protection! ! would tie withdrawn. This was dated the 22d of May—before the fighting. | Another, also to the people of Canton, on the 3d ol June, inviting them to return ami re • some their mini pursuits. j Another 01, the 7lh ol June, inviting the Chi nese merchants ami traders to resort to liong ! Kong, &.C. The Canton Press complains bitterly of the !convention, as too luvorable to the Chinese, | ami tending only to prolong the war, kc. i The Register is even more severe than the Press—in lei iy denouncing the honesty as well as the policy of Cap*.
