et ÀTMBg AA| J$Q®o THURSDAY MORNING, Not. 3. The weather has continued most de lightful. Indian Summer with all its beauties and its balmy influences has vis* ited us earlier than usual, and lingers long. Every day of such weather as we had yesterday is a blessing to all, but particu larly to the poor, from whom the evil days of cold, and snow, and ice are put farther off. Mr. Adams has written out and publish ed his Address to his constituents upon his return home from the late session of Congress. He is terribly severe upon the President. But we have read the speech, with all our previous opinions of Mr. Ad ams, by it, lully confirmed. Its temper is &arf, and its design equally bad. To in flame the North against the South, evi dently tends to a dissolution of the Union, and, in the words of Washington, all smjh tendencies, "ought to be considered hostile to the liberty and independence ol Ame rica." Mr. Adams deals his blows right and left. He abuses the Supreme Court— vilifies Southern statesjaaen—castigates Mr. Tyler—ridicules the Corporal's Guard, &c, S c. It is a production of great ability, nevertheless· Our friend of the Richmond Compiler may just call the Loco Foco party what he pleases. He will only alloyv us to do the same. Vigorous efforts are making in Virginia to commence an agitation for the repeal of the Tariff Law· The Locofocos intend to commence the work in the Old Dominion for effect. Jo Smith hot arrested.—The Quincy Whig of the 15th inst., says: e4The rumor we spoke of last week, in relation to the appre hension ol Smith, is not confirmed. We un derstandihowever, that he was seen at Nhu voo on Friday Jaet, apparently enjoying his lib erty." ι What Next?—The Ohio State Journal in forms us that the Locos of Belmont county have commenced the game ol returning none J but their own political Inends a& jurors to the Court? In the naine of justice, what next? The New York Tribune contains a, state· raent of "the enormous defalcations of the lace Locoioco office holders" of the city of New York, pepared under the direction and published by the authority of a Committee of citizens, appointed to investigate the accounts of certain Public Officers. Runaway Slates.—An attempt was made on Monday, in Pittsburg, to arrest some ab sconding slaves from Kentucky, but it waç unsuccessful· The slaves, seven incumber, were helped away by spapç pf their white friends· The Clay Club in Lexington has for its motto over the President's seat the following appropriate and soul-stirring words: 4^Βκ THAYED, BUT WOT DISMAYED." '.The Daily Whig, published at Baugor, Maine, claims for that city a larger business in I umber than any other port in the whole world. The amount of sawed lumber surve>ed for ship mental that place the preseui season has reached to one hundred and six millions of feet· The amount shipped without survey is estimated at the lowest at fifteen millions of feet* These 121,000,000 feet of lumber, at $10 per thousand, yielded $1,210,000, To this sum is to be added $400,000, the amount aris ing Irora the sale of clap boards, laths and shingles this season, which makes the total sales amount to $1,610,000. Farming.—Or. Htgan, writing from Belgi um, says,—"There is one feature in this coun try which is rather singular to an American or Englishman. The land is cultivated to the very edge οΓ the road in most places. Pota toes, beets, oats and all other crops, grow un molested within tea inches of the very edge of the road." We were informed by the Paris National ou the 6th ult· of a change in the Cabinet ai Wash* ioftOQ. "Louis Mac-Lane· who was Amer ican Minister in France.·' the successor ol Mr. Webster in the Department of State, and Mr· Caleb Custring, of Mr· Forward, in the Trea sury: Mr· Custring and Mr. Wire having been the^only members of Congress who defended President Tyler·" Τω » ·»ν·Λ.»ι«η —Τι· Protest* nt Ε disco Da) Church of Maryland has designated next Thursday as a day of Public Thanksgiving, to be observed by the members ol that Church. Pmcs or Wheat.—It is stated in the New York Morning Post, that wheat is now lower than it has been at any previous time since the revolution, unless it was during the Em· bargo and non-intercourse. This we believe is au error. It was lower about the year 1820. Flour was then sold at nearly one dollar per barrel below the present price. Blvcikk·—He was brave as a lion· an a droit and ready tactician, and, as Bonaparte observed of the British soldiery, never kuew when he waa beaten. 'His jests,' says the Quarterly Review ^frequently of a descrip tion ill calculated for chaste carst extorted grim smiles from hps black with the cartridge, and sent laughter through the column, while grape-shot was tearing its ranks. When he checked his hottest cannonades to light his pipe at the linstock of a gunner, the piece was, probably not the worse served. To· wards the close of the campaigu in France, the infirmities of age at one moment almost induced him to contemplate the abandonment of his command and retire into the Nether erlands; but the spirit triumphed over the β flesh, and though unable to remain in the sad· die lor the last attack on Montuiarte, he gave hie orders with calmness and precision from a carriage· His appearance on this occa· won must have taxed the gravity of his staff, }<* to protect his eyes then in a state of ria ient inflammation, the grisly veteran had repla ceraiscocked hat by a French lady'a bonnet and veil !" ..... τ · NAVAL MOVEMENT· Correspondence of the Bait. American. Washington, Nov. 1,1842. I learn Ui-day that the Constitution 44, the Marion sloop of war, and the schooners just returned from Florida, are ordered to proceed forthwith to Vera Cruz. This sudden move ment indicates something. The Cabinet will be re-organised before Congress meets, by Mr. Webster retiring (torn and Mr. Cushing going into it. Mr. Spen cer or Mr. Upshur will, in my opinion, bç Sç cretary of State. The Cunard steamer Caledonia, which left Liverpool on the 19ih October, may now be daily expected. The Great Western» which left on the 22d, will be close after her. * ' Ο ir market was abundantly supplied with all sorts of good things, on Saturday. We counted nearly fifty boats and canoes in the ; dock* laden with oysters, and each with a darky or two, hard at work clicking the shells and giving pleasing note of preparation for the hungry hour ol the day. We noticed, al so some very fine spoi-flsh, which attracted the particular notice of the aborigines, who could never get the taste of a good thing out of their mouths il they were to live to the age ol Meihusaln. There were some remarka ble fine chub too, caught on the rocks off; Newport's News. We have very rarely seen ! «ην thing to equal them. And there was a ! small though excellent supply of sturgeon, ! which speedily vanished, howçyer. The : wild duck were abundant and very good at | the moderate price ol 18 to 25 cts a pair. The blue wing were scarce, and the few that came fiew off rapialy at break of day. The poul try market was rather ehm. There was a lair supply of turkies, however, for the sea son, and those of medium size brought 75 cts. Chickens nearly grown, brought 18j cts., and fowls 25 çt$—Eggs, 12 j cts. per dozen—Poia InAC 971 Α κΠ Ale not. The sweet potatoes from SewelPs Point and the 'diggins* along that snore, attract universal attention, mit much from their extraordinary size (though they are large) as their quality.—ISçr foik Herald. Short Passages.—The Easterly wind of yesterday, brought a number of European vessels into port, a«d; some of them made re markably short passages The London packet ship Westminster made her passage in nine teendays, and the Havre packet ship Ville de Lyons in twenty-one days. The ship An gélique, from Amsterdam, also made her pas sage in twenty-one days.—N. York Cour. The Flying Machine. — We paid a visit yesterday to the extraordinary machine now ; constructing in th»s city, by which a skilful and intelligent mechanician is sanguine lie can fly iu the air. The e.\periment will be at lempted in the course of twenty days. About. itschanceof success we cannot speak ; but we do think ifever the stupendous enterprise I wacheived, it will be upon the principles this ! gentleman originates. At any ι ale, his inge- j uiou3 machine wiil De a curiosity ol itself, ev en if it never mounts into either.—N. O. Pic. j Apples.—This delicious fruit was never more abundant and in better quality, than this year. We have seen both in the orchards and in the markets, the very best fruit of this kind probably ever produced in any place.— It is now an admitted fact, mat Ohio produ ces the best apples in the United States. We see a statement that at some country town of England apples were selling at 2d. (about 4 C^nts) each.—This is just the price of the best j varieties in our market per pecK. A barrel ol the best kind (barrel included) can be had for 75 to 80 cents Such fruit was probably never before procured at such a price. I Cincinati Chronicle. The Wonderful Cave,—The JViammoth Cave of Kentucky is becoming a great place of resort for the curious, and is in truth one of the marvels of the earth. Dr. Croghan, of Louisville, the present proprietor of the Cave, has invited two geologists, or other learned men, in each State, as guests to the Cave Hotel during the present, season. Dr. Locke of Cincinati, has visited the Cave, and he states that14 the specimens of fibrous gypsum found in a cave lately discovered, a re among the most wonderlul mineral productions in the world, being of snowy whiteness, and imita ting with great exactness, numerous leaves, plants and flowers/' Dr. L. enriched his cabinet with specimens from the rare mineral treasures found in the Cave, *ome of which he declares 41 have nothing like them on the whole earth " [communicated.] The attention of the Police is requested to the Hogs that are allowed to run into town.— If the owners will not keep them up, let them be destroyed. It is their own fault if they lose their property. Kino Stbeet. But the warm weather will not let them sleep. Python· $50 REWARD. RANAWAYon the 15th inst., froip tht subscriber, near Pohick Church, Fairfax Co..
