Virginia Legislature.
In the I louse ol* Delegates on Monday, the
Committee for Courts id Justice, reported a lull
directing the release oi prisoners conlined in the
tail ot Alexandria County, tor ollences commit
ted prior to the extension ot the laws ot the
C ommonwealth over the count) ot Alexandria.
The Committee on Roads and Internal Navi
gation refuted a bill conferring certain addi
tional powers on the Alexandria Canal Compa
ny, lor the purchase or condemnation of land
a Ijacent to the Canal, for the purjiose* of the
Coal trade. vVc.
The House then took up the Revision of the
Criminal Code "a* reported by the Committee,
and the same was, after discussion, passed as
uyorted. One of the provisions of the revised
code, in relation to duelling, makes the laws
against duelling more stringent than before, in
its operation for the future, but, in effect, acts as
an amnesty lor offences committed on that sub
ject previous to the passage of this revision.

The Cuuard Steamers.
The dnv ot sailing from Boston and N. \ork,
of the steamers of the British and North Ameri
can Koval Mail Steamship Company has been
changed from Saturday to W ednesday—to com
mence on the -Mb of April, when the Caledonia
will sail from Boston. Meanwhile, the Britan
nia w ill sail from Boston on Saturday, the 11th
of March and the Cambria from New York on
the *27th of March. The day of sailing from
Liverpool has not been changed, and will con
tinue to he Saturday. The next steamer will
he the Cambria, which was to have lett tor
New York on the goth February: the next, the
Caledonia, which is to leave the 11th of March:
and the next, the new steamer America, which
leavesloi New \utk on the "2 >th ot March.
Captain Lott of the Britannia reports that on i

changed signal rockets with a steamship sup

Mr F. P. Holcombe, a civil engineer at the j
South, predicts -that the mighty Mississippi, fm
all purposes ul travel, Will be deserted. We
have hut to compare the distance by land and j
water from Louisville to New Oilmans, to show"

the opinion that the prediction of Mr. Holcombe

York for Liverpool, a crowded meeting of ladies;
and gentlemen was held, at which Capt. Knight
was presented with a beautiful white banner in
Father Mathew's behalf. It is designed to be

tude. one of which looks like a peacock, with a
pair of donkey ears, peering from beneath ins

Mr. Mason objected to the reception of the
petition. and the motion to receive it was laid

! After the presentation ol a few other petitions
and the adoption of two or three resolutions or
inquiry, Mr. Sevier moved that the Senate pro
ceed to the consideration of Kvccut.ve business,
which was agreed to. and the doors were closed,
and remained so until a late hour.
