When Mr. Henry's resolu tion** far snort of independence, flew like light ning through every paper, and kindled both sales of the Atlantic, this flaming declaration of td * same^date, of the independence of Meck lenburg county, of North ( arolina. absolving it from the British allegiance, and abjuring all po litical connection with that nation, although pant to Congress, too, is never heard of. it is not known even a twelvemonth after, when a •ii-nuar proposition i* first made in that body.— Armed with this hold example, would not you have addressed our timid brethren in peals o: thunder, on their tardy fears7 Would not ev ery advocate or independence .save rung the glories of Mecklenburg county, in North Caro lina, in the ears of the doubting Dickinson and others, who hung so heavilv ui>on us ? A et the example of* independent Mecklenburg county, m North Carolina, was never once quoted. It was pe^hap*. owing to this array of strong orasuinplive -testimony against the authenticity of the North Carolina Declaration, from a man, too, whose opinion* on the subject were enti tled to so great consideration, that the public rni.nl .had pretty generally determined against its genuineness But the researches of Air. Bancroft, in the State Paper Office of the British government, have thrown new light on this in- 1 terest.rii: subject, and will we think have the ef fect to establish the claim of the old North State, of having been the first to move in the cause of colonial independence. Thu following is the letter of Mr. Bancroft, with the accompanying remarks of the editor of the Kaloi<h Standard : l:te VtcVe'Jj-irg 'Declaration.- -A lew* days i.;nct*. in the Senate, Mr. Shephard submitted a .'pon from tho committee to w horn was referred i:.c communication of the governor, in relation u» the colonial and revolutionary history of North Carolina, accompanied by the following highly interesting ieuer from Mr. Bancroft, me Auier.can minister at London, to the Hon. i>av;J L. Mv 1>kar Sir : I held it of good augury, that your letter of the 12th of June reached me by the Hermann, just in time to be answered this morning. l ou may b* sure that I have ?r>a:e*l no pains to discover, in the British State raper Office, a c jpy of the resolves of the Committee of Meck lenburg, and with entire success A glance at the map, will show you that, in those days, the traffic of that part of North Carolina took a j southerly direction, and people in Charleston, j and sometime* even in Savannah, knew what j wdi going on in “Charlotte iown,” before Go vernor Martin. The liist account of ‘ tho ex- ; traordmary resolve* by the people in Charlotte d own, Mecklenburg county," was sent over to England, by Sir James VVright, then governor ot t»corg»?., in >i letter of the 20th of June, 1775 The newspaper thus transmitted i* still preserv ed. and jk the nutnoer 4Its of the S; »ath Carolina Gazette an t Country Journal, Tuesday, June 13,17 75. 1 rea l the re«o,ve«. you may "be sure, with reverence, and immediately obtained a, copy of them; thinking myself the sole discov erer.
