The Alexandria Canal, which is a continuation of the Chesa peake and Ohio Canal, runs along its entire length from North to South, directly in its rear, until its reaches the large ami commodious ba sin designed to receive the immense fleet of boats that will be engaged on these public works. This basin is elevated thirty-six feet above the river Potomac, aflbrdmg ample water power for any purposes that may bereuuired.— The Locks, four in number, intersect this basin running east to the river, ami constitutes within a few feet the southern boundary of the property, and separates the county from'the corporation of Alexandria. The subscriber's land embraces from eight to ten squares, as laid off by t ie cor poration. and his water-rights cover a space of thirty acres, more or less—an important con sideration connected with the coal and other trade, as two ranges of wharves running along its front can he made, one on the inside where a depth of twelve or fourteen feet water can be bad m thirty or forty steps from the shore, and theother on tfie outside along ine cnannei. wnere the water is thirty-six feet deep, forming be tween the two wharves a basin or smooth sur face of water two thousand feet long and three hundred feet wide, protected by individual right, and capable of holding several score of coal or produce boats at one time, while on the outside of the outer wharf schooners, brigs and ships, of the largest si/e. can load with ease and secu rity. The Alexandria Custom-house. Post-of fice, and Market-house are located on streets running through the premises, and in addition toother advantages, it is m the county, and con sequently free from corporate taxation. In order to form some conception of the vast a mount of business that will he done on the canal when completed to Cumberland, and as a mat ter of course the great demand there will be for wharves and shipping accommodation, the pub lic is reminded that the largest steamboats as cend the Ohio and Monongalia rivers to Brow ns ville. from which idace to Cumberland there is only 70 miles of land portage or waggoning, over one of the best roads in the power of the general government to make in that section of country. A large amount of tonnage will be received from that source. 1 h** Baltimore and Ohio railroad, when completed to Wheeling, will he an important feeler. Our good old State, having happily secured the interest of this important work, three hundred square miles of coal and iron lands, of a superior kind, esti mated to contain 100.000 tons of coni per acre, and within its limits V237.0G0.0U0 tons of iron | ore. without penetrating below the level of the potomac river. Besides, limestone, hydraulic lime and fire-clay, granite, marble, lumber, and all the varied products of the rich and flourish ing valley of the Potomac and Shenandoah, to obtain which immense treasure the Canal has been made at a cost of thirteen or fourteen mil lions of dollars. Surely the land and water rights adjoining the outlet of such a place must he of immense value, and the shrewd and saga cious and enterprising capitalist, will at once perceive its advantages and secure it immediate ly. 1 will lease this property'as abo\e. in order to have it unproved, at a price far below its val ue. The title which the subscriber can convey is unquestionable, for proof of which applica tion may be made to F. L. AMERICAN LOVE OF ADVENTURE. AStokm at Sea.—Few there are, of the na tive-born children of the New World, who aie not desirous ot visiting the land of their furefati. j eis. A spirit ot inquiiy exists in the thought, | and an ambitious daring animates the soul ot i the true American, which cannot be restricted i to the limits of a continent. Alter having ex i ammed, from one and to the other, his ow n “Land ol tli** torrent and the rock, The dark blue lak*—the mighty river, With mountains reared alolt to mock The lightning'* Ilash, llie thunder’s shock— Hi> own—his native land lorever!” he finds him«eif impelled, by a combined feeling j ol curiosity and adventure, to seek for other scenes. And w hat so attractive to his mind. ' as the stor ed antiquities of Europe? Amid I them he can find peichance, spots made memo latde by their associations w ith his sires: ami as he examines them his heart will he made to throb with a new, strange, and uncontrollable emotion. If, however, he owes his descent to no [ feudal lordlmg, with his “gentle” bloody not | less proud will the American child of a Euro ! pean parent be. in treading on the fields which i were cultivated and enriched by the toil of his j own ancts>tral lace. Prompted by a desire, such as we have al ready described as being peculiarly Ameiican, the w riter of this sketch took passage, in Jan uary, 1S47. on hoard ol one of our Liverpool packet ships. It was a stormy season of a stor my year, and yy lien yve were about midwray over the Atlantic, a wintry hurricane cams tip, such as has seldom been equaled in fieicenes* and long continuance. Gradually it cama, on and on, from the cold North-west, driving our proud bark before it as a feather on the foaming surge. And onward moved our hark, as “a thing of lift seemingly conscious of the responsibility which attached to her trust, and of the value of an un sullied reputation. Ere yet the gale had ac quired an unusual degree of intensity, all gaily did that gallant craft career. Her white-bo somed sails w ere rounded w ith a swelling pride and bravel) to the stern music of the atom she danced over the billowy waste of Ocean. But with the increa** of the gale, she had to be dis mantled; still, bared as she was to the anger of the elemental strife, she struggled as if for the preservation of her honor. It was a fearful sight to look on—that wild, tumultuous sea, which, “yawned around us like a hell,” and that >h p, contending with the midnight madness of the storm, and lighted up the mountain-billows, in her movements, with strange firee of phos phorescei.ee. Night passed ayvay, and morning and mid way came—and still came the blast of Boreas, stronget and more wrathful. And then the sun shone out, as if in mockery, from h<s hall of clouds, and smiling on the agitated bosom of the deep, the broken crest of every wave gave glimpses of the rain bow-signet of (Omnipotence. Never was scene more beautifully grand, more terribly sublime—and many were they w ho ac knowleugeu “a pleading fear” in contemplating that strange ami Nature-painted picture. Night came again It was the second mid night since the commencement of the storm.— I'he ocean’s tumult was more terrible than it had Net been, and the counterances of tbe bra vest began to be shadowed over with despair. Swollen to their largest dimensions, thebiLows began to cross each other’s path, and madly tumble together, from their heaven-piled heights as if in the very agonv of stufe. Still strug gling on, our ship Nvas at length overmastered by the storm. A giant wave, more furious than an) of its fellow a, took possession of tbe deck, m and no less than ten of our good mariners were swept away into the depths! Oh! how many a tender tie wa« severed by that relentless wave! how many a fair prospect was blighted! how man) a blight hope was rendered dim! — They all bad families and friends who loved them— a moment, and theyyrere shrouded in their deep blue grave, from which they nevar can return till the sea yields up its dead: There were Nve left, a wreck on the wild seen* of elemental contention. The daikness of midnight was around us all the officers of the ship were gone, and to hope for safety seemed more than madness! It were vain to attempt to describe that night. Ravings of insanity mingled with the deep bass oi the waters ami the howlingsof the blast.- - The lady of one of those stalwart men who were torn away hv that tyrant wave, felt that in losing her hushaii'1, she had li st her all.— 'I’he thought was too much for her—her intel lect gave way, ami then, to listen to her wild cries, widowed and frenzied as she was—it was indeed pitiable! When morning came again, the wind was lulled, and the sea was becoming calm. Our few remaining seamen applied themselves to tbe hard task of getting the ship again under command. They succeeded; and with tbe as sistance afforded by a neighbor-ship, which ac ted the good Samaritan in our case, we finally arrived, without any other accident, at the port for which we sailed.—Daily Delta.
