But for the carefulness of the engineer on .
the Culpeper tram—Mr. Smith— on Saturday
evening, some of your neighbors would have
hid to do without milk for their supper.—
There were five cows that stuck to the road,
crossing and re crossing for more than a quar
ter of a mile, and foie ng the cars to come to a
s.op two or three times. My object in writing
this, is simply to make a suggestion to the
Railroad Company, h> which l think the\ will
sive time and ill will. Let the engineer be
provided with a gun loaded with a small charge
of mustard seed shot, to pepper the obstinate
catt'e, and he will lind that it will not injure
them, and at the same lime will effectually keep
them off die track. I have tried the experiment
to my satisfaction on roguish hoises and cows,
and have never known shot to fad after every
thing else had. f*

LOCAL ITEMS
We understand that at a meeting of the IV
rectors o! toe Mount Vernon Cotton Manufac
turing Company held on Monday night ia^t, it
was ordered that the amount, borrowed frun
the Stockholders, of $2 -*>0 per share, for the
purpose of buying additional machinery, he re
turned on the 1st of November with interest, and
that 10 per cent be paid on the debtsof the com
pany ($13 000,)on the 1st of December n%xt. 1 he
result ot the operations ot the company lor
the last twelve months shows a profit of about
$0000. The Company has been laboring under
the disadvantage of a want of labor for two or
three months past. Mr. Snowden, the Super
intendent of the Company has tendered his rt
signa'ion, to take effect on the first of January
next.
We have seen some specimens of Kirs plant
and Bed pepper, grown by Mr. Jay lor, garden
er, at the south end of the City, which are un
equalled by any thing of the kind, we have
seen.
A man was arrested under suspicious cir
cumstances by the Night V\atch on Monday
night, but after an examination he was dis
charged tor want of sufficient evidence to con
vict him.

It is expected that the Long Bridge over the

as to allow the passage ot vehicles.
