One of the large Bank note engraving es tablishments of Cincinnati has lately finish ed an elegant ‘‘blank cheek plate or an or der from the Commissioner of the Board of Public Works. These checks, says the Com mercial, are to be given the laborer in his own name, and must state the exact service performed. The State Auditor receives the checks and draws an order for the amount upon the State Treasurer. The shipments of coal for the week ending ; Saturday, loth instant, by the Chesapeake > and Ohio Canal show a decrease, as compar ed with lust week’s shipments, of 885 14-20 1 tons, 60 boats having cleared this port, load ed with 6,5 )4 12-20 tons of coal and 131 11 2m tons of coke. During the same week there were trans ported over the Cumberland Coal and Iron Company’s Railroad 7,3*32 17-30 tons, and over the Mt. Savage Iron Company’s Rail road 0,762 ton'*, making an aggregate tor the week, from the Frostburg region, of 14,154 17-20 tons. For the same period there were transported over the George s Creek Coal and Iron Company's Railroad, 5,518 18 20tons, and over the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, from the Llangollen and New Creek Mine*, 1,129 14-20 Ions, making a total from the Western port region of 6, 048 12-20 tons, all of w ich passed eastward over the Baltimore &Ohio Railroad. Total from the entire coal region for the week 20,803,9 tons, and since the first of Jan uary last 125,705 10 20 tons, of which 95,003 10-20 tons were transported over the Balti , more Ohio Railroad and 30,102 tons de ceoded the Chesapeake ami Ohio Canal. LOCAL ITEMS* The Circuit Court was engaged yoaterday, in the trial of but one jury cause, Matthews vs. Thomas, in which the jury founda\er dict for the plaintiff—Edwards for the plain tiff; Brent for the defendant. The docket was then called, and most ot the cases, be ing new cases, were continued to the next term. A motion was made in the suit of Hepburn vs. Hepburn, to tile a petition in this cause, on behalf of the Dundasses, in which the peti tioners set up a claim to the property near the Canal basin, and lately sold under a de cree of this Court. Some novel and impor tant questions being raised by this mo t on, the judge took the papers, will proba bly render his decision at a subsequent day of the term. The Court will certainly con tinue in session during the remainder of the week, and possibly during a portion of the n ext. The Alexandria correspondent of the Washington Star says, the recent assessment of real estate amounts to $0,000,000; a large increase on our last estimate. During the past year, 440 births and 250 deaths have taken place in the city. Mrs. Cicilia Young’s Second Concert takes place at Sarepta Hall to-night. Those who attended the Concert on AN ednosday night, were highly pleased. The recent showers we have had, have been of much advantage to the growing crops and gardens.
