The American barque Pincataqua, ln*m Boston, has arrived at Madras. She will al ready have attracted the notice of all whom business or pleasure have drawn to the beach, where she presents the curious appearance »>t a vessel on her beam ends and about to sink. She left Boston nearly five months ago in good trim, and filled with ice for Madras. By some strange chance it has nearly all melted away on one side of her hold, shitting the centre of gravity till she floats as she is now to be seen. The length of her voyage i* to be accounted for by the difficulty of sailing her in her present trim. The supply of ice is well-timed. The stock at the ice-house had got so low that the greatest economy could not make it last, at the present rate of demand, for more than ten days or a fort night.—Madras Examiner, April ‘21. SLEEPING ON SUNDAY. A minister of‘kirk’ in good old Scotland, once discovered his wife fallen asleep in tin* midst of his homily on the Sabbath. So paus ing in the steady, and possibly monotonous, flow of his oratory, he broke forth with this personal address, sharp and clear, but very deliberate: “Susan!’* Susan opened her eyes and ears in a twink ling, as did all other dreamers in the house, whether asleep or awake. “Susan, 1 dinna marry you lor your weann sin've had' none! And I dinna marry ye for your beauty: that the hail congregation can see. And if ye hae no grace, I have made a sair bargain!" Susan's slumbers were effectually broken up for that day^^^^^^^ An important discovery has lately been made by the chemists, and is nothing less than the leaves of coffee are better than the berries. The essential principles of tea and coffee are the same, although chemists still call that from tea theine, and that from cof fee caffem. This discovery will probably affect the commerce of Brazil, which now ex ports such enormous masses ot the coflee ber ry. When it is generally known that the leaves of the coflee tree are as valuable as the berries, the price of coffee may be lower.
