THURSDAY MORNING, MAY 25, 1854.
~GROWLS FROM “DIOGENES.”
Hard Tines for Poor Old Lindley Murray.
—The first line—we hare not yet been able
to get farther than the first line—of Mr.
Charles Dickens's new work of fiction, “Hard
Times”1 reads thus:
“Npw what I want is facts!”
Diogenes is not so exacting as the talented
author, We could be well content to dispense
with facts if he would onlv once more give
us, as Re used to do, good fictions. But one
thing we must insist upon; and we trust that
Mr. Dickens will excuse our parodying his
brilliant style, when we assure him that
“What we want are grammar!”
Diogenes presents his compliments to the
reporters of the press, and would feel greatly
obliged if, in relating the tumbling down of a
house or a railway concussion, they would
not make use of the word debris, for, to tell
the truth, it's all rubbish.

must necessarily have a lac(k) of rupees.
The Overland Male*—Any man who goes
up in a balloon!
Seasonable Remarks.—The present weath
er may be said to be like city merchants, a
good deal on ’change.
The old saying of March “coming in like
a lion and going out like a lamb,” is practi
cally reversed; lamb having already come in
and the lion having goue out—to tight the
Russians.
People on the shady side of fifty prefer the
sunny side of the street; and on every baud
we meet with primroses for prim ladies.
Our soldiers who are planted in the east,
may be expected to shoot early in April; and
several promising blades, including that har
dy evergreen, Charley Napier, will no doubt
come up (when they are wanted) very nicely.
Several domestie'nurseries have some ten
der plants; which arc being tended with great
care by the elder branches of the family.
Shirt buttons have been sewn in large num
bers, and an abundant harvest of affection is
anticipated as the result.
There is already a great demand for shrub,
and should a dry season ensue, there will no
doubt be a still greater demand for shrub and
water.
The weather prophets, whom public opinion
is often disposed to arraign, have predicted
no rain, lately, confiuiug themselves entirely
to a few drj remarks.
Roses are already beginning to rise. The
bloom of the crocus has silenced the croker's
tongue; verdure begins to clothe the sweet
briar and sweet William, and others of the
floricultural family will follow en suite.
* The following indications of the season are
also beginning to show themselves; summer
bonnets, and some are not bonnets; light dres
set and heavy swells; black eyes addressing
importunate wights; and Lovegrove a dress
ing white bait at Blackwall.
The Mincing Lane article states, that last
week's deliveries of tea were slow; all that we
can say is that if the deliveries were sloe, we
are sorry to hear it. _
POPULATION OF GREAT BRITAIN.
The Westminster Review, in an interest
ing article entitled “Results of the Census oi
1851/> gives some curious statistics in rela
tion to the character and prominent divis
ion# of* the'British people. The census wat
taken in a single night, by forty thousand
persons. The result showed *that out of a
total population of 21,121,967 persons,
20,000 were absent in France, 2783 in Russia
and 1235 in Turkey. About a quarter of a
million were at sea or abroad. The entire
population was nearly double that ot i860.
According to the census, about 115,CUM) per*
sons die annually in England of preventable
disease#. In addition to this average, the
cholera, during its last visit, carried off 72,
000 victims.
As to - private or family life, some of the
faote presented are strange enough. But one
solitary case wae found of a family, consist
ing of parent* and twelve children living to
gether, among 41,916 families. Celibacy is
very prevalent in England. In the south
eastern division, of women under the age of
45, the Wives were less than 170,000, and the
widows and spinsters more than 120,*M)0.—
Of 67,609 households, 25,293 belonged to
single men and women. These are startling
koto. " ‘
The following is related as an incident that
occurred just before the abandonment of the
ship Winchester, lately wrecked at sea,
whole passengers were saved by the Ameri
can mail steamer IV ashingtou:
“As -Mr. King, the second officer of the
Washington, and Capt. Moore, of the Win
chester, were about to take their final leave
of the wrecked ship, which was just before
she went down, carrying her dead to a watery
grave, he thought it best to take one more
glance at the corses. ‘I really believe that
woman breathes!' was the exclamation ot
one of them, as a thrill of horror mingled
with hope van through his bosom. They ap
proached the body of a female, and placed
their earl * to her mouth; when lo! they dis
covered that that one whom they had suppos
wAastm breathing! They removed
heron boned the Washington, and she is now
at the hospital on Staten Island in a rapid
state of convalescence.”_

Health restored and life
LENGTHENED, BY DR. MORSE’S
INVIGORATING ELIXIR AND CORDIAL.—
For centuries, Medical Science has been ran
sacking the vegetable and mineral kingdom*, in
search of something that should restore the lost
or decaying energies of the nervous and muscular
systems, without the drawback ot subsequent
prostration, which all stimulants, tonics, and
narcotics had heretotore entailed, ihat some
thing has been found. It is a vegetable produc
tion, brought from the sterile deserts of Arabia
the Stonv, by the celebrated Prolessor M. Morse,
well known as a distinguished member ot the
leading scientific societies ot the.Old World, and
equally distinguished as a physician, a chemist,
and a traveller. The juices of this herb concen
trate,! and combined with other vegetable medi
cinal extracts, are now producing results, mth
erto unheard of, in this or any other countrj.
At first the properties attributed to Proles^r
MORSE'S INVIGORATING ELIXIR AM)
CORDIAL were deemed tabulous. Ihe public,
often deceived, could not believe the simple and
sublime truths announced by the discoverer.
But facts, undeniable facts, attested by witnesses
of the highest class and charac,ei are now tiium
, • __ 11 .1_
Piling ovci an _
INCREDULITY IS OV ERTHROWN,
by a mass of' testimony which is perfectly irre
sistible. 1.1
The Elixir, remedies, in all raves, the deplora
ble evils arising from a misuse or abuse of the
various organs which make up the wonderful
machine called man. It restores to full '»gor
every delicate function connected with that mys
terious compound agency' of matter and mind,
necessary to the reproduction of human life.
To persons of techie muscular frame, or deficient
in vital power, it is recommended as the only
means of communicating that energy "hich is
necessary to the proper enjoyment of all the natu
ral upj»etite>, as well as oi the higher mental
attributes. Its beneficial effects are not confined
to either s**x or to any' age. 1 he feeble girl, the
ailing wife, the listless, enervated youth, the
overworn man of business, the victim of iiei
voiis depression, the individual suffering from
general debility or from the weakness ot a single
organ, will all find immediate and permanent
relief from the use of this incomparable renova
ter. To those who hav e a predisposition to par
alysis. it will prove a complete and unfailing
safeguard against that terrible malady. There
are many, perhaps, who have so trifled with
their constitutions, that they think themselves be
yond the reach of medicine. I^et not even these
despair. The Elixir deals with disease as it ex
ists, without reference to causes, and will not
only remove the disorder itself, but
REBUILD THE BROKEN CONSTITUTION.
Brought from a vast distance, the principal in
gredient of the Elixir can only be produced at a
heavy expense, and the process ol manufacture
is also costly. Hence, the price, to be at all rej
munerative, must necessarily’ l*e higher than that
oft he trashy’, chance-compound nostrums, ot vv Inch
the only’ expense consists in the advertising.
But, if health is indeed a “priceless blessing,”
then is the Invigorating Elixir and Cordial the
cheapest medicine in the known world.
T he derangements of the system, leading to
nervous diseases, and the forms of nervous disease
it„i*lf are so numerous, that it would require a
column to enumerate the* maladies for which
this preparation is a specific. A few, however,
may lie enumerated, v iz neuralgia, tic doloreaux,
headache, incipient paralysis, hysteria, dyspep
sia, palpitation of the heart, spinal affections,
muscular debility, tremors, flatulence, a pricking
sensation in the flesh, numbness, torpidity ot the
liver, mental depression, weakness of the will,
indisposition to move, faintness alter exercise,
broken sleep and terrifying dreams, inability to
remain in one place or position, weakness ol the
procreative organs, sexual incompetent')',melan
choly, monomania, tluor albos, sinking at the
stomach, female irregularities, a chronic tendency
to miscarriage, emaciation, and all complaint*
growing out of a free indulgence of the passions,
and all barrenness, that does not proceed from
organic causes beyond the reach of medicine.
Whenever the organs to be acted upon are tree
from malformation or strictural diseases, it is
av erred that Morse s Invigorating Klixir will r»*J
place weakness with strength, incapacity with
efficiency, irregularity with uniform and natural
activity, and this not only without hazard ot re
action, but with a happy effect on the general or
ganization. ( fr Bear in mind that al. o ..Iadi*>,
wherever they begin, finish with the nervous sys*
tern, and that the paralyzation of the nerves o»
motion and sensation is physical death —
tST Bear in mind, also, that for every kind of
nervous disea?e, the Klixir and Cordial is the only
reliable preparation known. A blfEA I MKD
1C INK KOR FEMALES.
The unparalleled . u’ecfs ol this great restora
tive in all complaiMts incident to female*, mark
a new era in the annals of medicine. J housands
of stimulants have hern invented—thousands ol
invigorants concocted—all purporting to be *ja»
cifics in the various diseases, and derangements,
to which the delicate conformation ol woman
render her liable. I he resull has heretofore been
uniform. Ihese nostrums have indeed imparted
a momentary viv acity to the nervous system, a
transient and delusive vigor to the muscles; but
this flash ol relief has been succeeded by a de
pression and prostration greater than before, arid
the end has too often been utterly to paralyze the
recuperative power of the nerves and the vital
organization, and finally to destroy the unhappy
patient. But in MORSKS INvKiOKAIINb
KLIXIR, is presented as a phenomenon in the
materia medica hitherto unheard of- a stimulant
without a reaction.
The herb which forms it* main ingredient,f as
been admitted by all the great medical and phar
maceutical institutions ot Kuropc, to be in tins
respect sui generis. Hr. Morse whose name is
an undisputed authority in science, discovered
the production in Arabia, where his attention
was excited by the wonderfully invigorating
efiects it produced upon the natives. In lact
the wondenul power of endurance, the exhaust
less vigor exhibited by the Arabs ot both sexes,
m their desert pilgrimages, is attributable to the

Dear Sir:—It gives nw pleasure to inform you,
that one ol my patients, while in Boston, procur
ed some of your Cordial, which he tells me he
has taken two weeks, lor w hich time he has not
been troubled as he was Ulore. He already
looks like a new person, who so short a time
since looked so pale and thin, and was scarcely
able to crawl around. I thought it scarcely jk»
sibk* lor him ever to regain his lull strength and
faculties} his case w’as an extremely bad one. I
prescribed the usual medicine us«*d in such cases
m the Hospital, but they were ol no effect. In
the mean time, my patient had procured some of
your Cordial, which effected a cure, I am satis
fied no othei medicine could have done. J shall
ever warmlv lecommend it whenever an opport
limitv occurs. The Inventor in my younger
da\<- I well remem her, as being considered one

and hat! heard ins Cordial very highly Bpolten of,
hut was one ol the incredulous as To its merits,
until I was so unexpectedly and satisfactorily
convinced to the contrary. It must be a great
consolation to you, to think what a vast amount
of human misery your Cordial is alleviating.
With my warmest wishes lor your health, hap
piness and continued success, 1 remain, very tru
ly, yours H. A. WOOD, M D.
