CwagrtMt In the Senate, yesterday, Mr. Bell spoke on the Nebraska bill. Mr. Gillette, the new Senator from Connecticut, appeared. In the House of Representatives, the De ficiency bill was farther discussed. The Dead Come to Life. The readers of the Republican iu 1844 or 1845, can hardly fail to recollect an aeeouut of the mysterious disappearance from Jeffer son Cityxof a gentleman by the name of Cor dell, then doing business there as a mer chant. It created great excitement then, and tor a long time afterward. At the time of writing this article we cannot reler to our files, but our recollection is,’ that he lett Jef ferson City for Boouville, and was seen on the way by a citizen of Jefferson, w ith whom he had a" brief conversation, and nothing more was ever heard of him. It was known that he had money with him, for the purpose of entering, or purchasing lands, and this led to the supposition that he had been mur dered aud robbed. At all events, nothing was’ ever heard of him after that period. His friends offered large rewards for the discove ry of the murderer, and the Governor of the State did the same thing, tears passed; the family, under conviction of his death, ad ministered upon his estate, and it was settled up. His widow, (;ts every one supposed her to be,) and two children, returned to her father’s roof, where they have ever since resi ded. Mr. Cordell, for years before his disap pearance, maintained an enviable reputation at home and abroad. With a knowledge of these facts, what was our surprise yesterday to learn that he had appeared, in proper person, at the house ot Mr. Samuel Conway, a connexion by mar riage, in this county, and made himself known, after au absence of some nine or ten vears. He was recognized, and it is under stood that information was giveu of the un expected return to his family, living in an other part of the country. We cannot speak with accuracy of his whcreal»outs during the time of his absence, lie accounts for his leaving home by supposing that it was dur ing a period of mental alienation—he has been in Mexico, and from thence went to New York, and now has returned to Missou ri.—St. h>nis IntelUi/ewer. Presbyterian Assemblies. Buffalo, Mav 24th.—Since our last report the Old School Assembly has l>een mainly em ployed in considering the judicial case involv ing the right of the Church to strike from the lists ot Klders all refusing to have their chil dren baptized. The argument was not con cluded when the hour arrived for hearing the rei»ort of the Board of Education. The Board have circulated 28,000 1 ><>oks and 2t>,»HX) tracts during the year. The value of the publications distributed has been &*»>, lUMt a htiil } nv*»r the VV^ A l«v VVtkVV*' ...V • - ^ " - previous year $12,000. The Board ot Domestic Missions reported iu favor of building a church at M ashing toil, and recommended the collection of trom $50,000 to $100,oOU. The report relative to the Danville Semina ry came up, when a warm personal debate commenced. Dr. McMaster, of \ a., attack ed bitterly the action of the committee at the last General Assembly, charging that they had improperly suppressed information before them, and induced the Assembly to adopt the report, which otherwise would not have been adopted. The tight is between the Danville and New Albany Semiuaries. Dr. Breckenridge op pose*, and a warm time is anticipated. Dr. McMasters had uot concluded at the time ot adjournment. Puiudklthia. May 24.—At the New School Presbyteriau Convention, a resolution has been adopted adverse to changing the name and limits of Peoria. The plan to raise $100,000 for the purpose of aiding feeble congregations, erect houses of worship, Ac., has been approved. The treasurer stat'd that already five thousand dollars have been raised lor that purpose. _ _ A CumlUUn- for Oflivt. The Mormons. : The la>t Edinburg Rev iew, contains a com plete history of this corrupt community, from the origin of the gross imposture through its whole scandalous progress down ! to the present moment, it gives a lair view ! of the doctrines and the condition oi the Mormons, and holds them up, by a plain 1 statement of undeniable facts, t<» the dis gust and horror of the civilized world.— The Review states that more dupes have been made in England to this misehiev i uus and monstrous delusion than iu all ! the world besides. Mentioning an au thentic j*»rtrait of Joseph Smith—the Ma homet—the Review remarks: “Never did we see a face on which the hand ol lleaven had more legibly written rascal.” The face was a faithful index of the character. Astonish I iugas the growth of Mormonism seems even j to those who never knew its founder, to those j w ho did, it is so utterly astounding that they have no words to express their wonder. If the reader will bring to bis recollection the most thorough, irredeemable, acknowledged scamp j ofall his acquaintance, and try toimaginesuch a man the successful head of a new religion, he will have some ideaof the boundless won derof those who formerly knew ‘Joe Smith/ j at tiie triumph of the imposture of the most notorious and graceless vagabond in all M es tern New York.— Itich. ]>infmtrh. . - The Small Note Law. This link, when completed, and it will be prosecuted with vigor, will put us in imme diate connection with Wheeling, and connect us with the Winchester and Potomac Road, which is 32 miles in length, making the dis tance from Alexandria to Winchester by Railroad, 06 miles. The country through which these roads are to run, is said to be exceedingly favorable for their constructs n with easy grades. The grade coming east from Pursellville to Alexandria, does not exceed 20 feet to the mile, and the highest grade between that point and Harper’s Ferry coming east, is 20 feet to the mile, according to the surveys made of the route. Upon the action of the Count}' Court of Rockingham, at its next term, (June,) the line of the Manassas Gap Road to Harrison burg will be put under contract as soon as located , and as far as Woodstock, forthwith.
