THE GAZETTE. ' FRIDAY MORNING, MAY 26, 1854. ^ A GRASSHOPPER ROAST. Among the choice delicacies with which the Digger Indians regale themselves during the summer season, says the Empire County Argus, is the grasshopper roast. Having been an eye-witness to the preparation and discussion of one of their feasts of grasshop pers, we can describe it truthfully. There are districts in California, as well as portions of the plains between the Sierra Nevada and the Ro&y Mountains, that li terally swarm with grasshoppers, and in such astonishing num bers, that a man cannot place his foot to the ground, while walking th ere, without crush ing many. To the Indians they are a delica cy, and are caught and cooked in the following manner: A piece of ground is sought where they most abound, in the centre of which an excavation is made, large and deep enough to prevent the insects from dropping out when once in. The entire party of Diggers, old and young, male and female, then surround as much of the adjoining grounds as they can, and with each a green bough in hand, whipping and thrashing on every side, grad ually approach the ceutre, driving the in sects before them in countless multitudes, till at last all, or nearly all, are secured iu the pit. In the meantime, smaller excavations are made answeriug the purpose ot ovens, in which fires are kindled, and kept up till the surrounding earth, for a short distance, be comes sufficiently heated, together with a flat stone large cnougu wverureuu-n.— The gra»hopi»ers are now taken in coarse bags, and, after being thoroughly soaked in salt water for a few moments, are emptied into the oven and closed in. Ten or tittecu minutes suffice to roast them, when they are taken out and eaten without further prepar ation, and with much apparent relish, or, as is sometimes the case, reduced to powder and made into soup. And having from cu riosity tasted, not of the soup hut ol the roast, really, if one could divest himself of the idea of eating an insect as we do an oyster or shrimp, without other preparation than sim ple roasting, they would not be considered very bad eating, even by more refined epi cures than the Digger Indians. INFIDELITY. The Richmond Enquirer thus notices some of the ways in which Science has lately been employed to discredit the authority of the Scriptures: . In the “Types of Mankind,” a work just frem the press, an elaborate attempt is made by a corps of savaos to overthrow the theory of the unity of races. They do not undertake to establish any theory of their own, for they agree only in assailing the prevalent doctrine. The writers are ail able men, and it is but just to concede that their book displays much original research, curious information, and ingenious speculation. T hey have un doubtedly contributed many facts to the science of Ethnography, but they tall far short of solving the problem they discuss. 1 he book will excite a sensation, and will be the occasion of much controversy, but we do not think it will impair, much less destroy, the authority of the scriptures, touching the ques tion of the unity of the races. Like the “\ es tigea of Creation,” the “Types of Mankind” wSl perplex the weak, delude the superficial, and provoke the wrath ol the combative pi> lsmic, until some man of genuine science and competent genius exposes its absurdities and discredits its authority. Uuless the cham pions of Christianity decline the challenge, and refuse to meet the adversary with tin —tlmir faith is assailed. they will lose nothing by the controversy ti which they are invited. If, however, they seek shelter behind the dogmas of bigotry, and by discouraging freedom of imiuiry, !*?■ tray an apprchesion of the revelatioua of science, they will suffer as much by their pusillanimity, as by a positive repulse. ( hris tianity has nothing to fear from genuine science. It is upon the hasty generalizations and rash conclusions oijalxc science that Iu hdelity takes its stand. Driven from this position into the open held ot tree discussion, it must succumb. RACE AROuSTtUB WORLD. Two elipper ships were towed to sea from San Francisco on the .'51st of March last: one of them the David Brown, of New York, left her port on the 12th December, and arrived at Francisco in ninety-eight days; the oth er, the Romance of the Seas, a Boston vessel, left on the lbth of December, and arrived out in ninety-six davs. They will now raei to Hong Kong, and thence to their respective port#. This Paint differs from the so-called Mineral Paints of the day, which are principally Ochres and Clays colored, and are entirely worthless. Silver's Plastic Paints are purely Metalic, con taining no Alumin or Clay. They are levigated finely, mix readily with Linseed Oil, (without the trouble of grinding,) and flow under the brush as Ireely a» the best White Lead. These Paints excel all others in body or cover ing properties, one pound of which will cover as much surface, as two pounds of White Lead. There are lour natural colors, viz: Black or Slate, Brown, Olive, and Chocolate. Directions.—This Paint flows freely under the brush, and its covering property is increased by using it mixed as thickly as possible, with pi ke Linseed Oil; as the Paint is the lasting or pro tecting body, and the (hi simply the medium or agent in spreading it.
