One day last week Mrs. Horton, who re-. sides about three miles west of Oswego, saw' a large pine tree fall directly across the rail i road track. She instantly laid down the ba ; by, called her husband from his work, and they both ran to the railroad, a distance of wine hundred rods, taking an axe with them. But the tree was sound, and not less than two feet in diameter where it crossed the track, the spot being at a short curve in the road, and out of view from any considerable dis tance. Worse than all, the time for the train to pass w as close at hand. Mr. Horton im | mediately took off his red flannel drawers, I tore them in two, and ran up the road with I one leg, while his wife ran down w ith the i other. In a few' minutes the mail passenger train approached at full speed, when it was arrested by Mrs. Horton standingon the track waving the leg of the red daiinel drawers on i a mullen stalk. The tree was soon, cut and 1 rolled off the track, w'iththe aid of the pas sengers, who proceeded on their journey; many lives and limbs doubtless having been saved by this really kind and noble act of Mrs. Horton. port LArv fcLIMJIlUAa. While the decreased number of candidates is a source of congratulation, the want of in terest, at the same time, exhibited, in many instances, on the part of the people in tilling these offices, is a matter from which some danger is to be appreheuded. Popular elec tions have become so common now that the voters have gotten surfeited with the exercise o! the elective franchise. They are disposed to stav at home, and let the elections take care of themselves* rather than be troubled so frequently with them. In proportion as this spirit manifests itself among our people, ! will the standard of official capacity decline. The control of these elections will tad into the hands of demagogues, and the tools of intriguers alter the spoils of office. There will always be plenty ready to appropriate | to themselves wnat more properly belongs i to others; and they will take good care | to do so in the absence of the exercise of prerogatives by others. The importance of having the puolic offices tilled with men fully competent to discharge the duties thereof, must be apparent to ail, but if the people neglect to see that they are so tilled, the tault must rest with them.—ltich.
