Observations on tbs recent Kellpse, »n«l some attending Phenomena. OBSERVATORY, I Alexandria Boarding School, 5th wo. 27th, 1854. ) The Eclipse of the Sun occurred last even ing, as our citizeus had tho pleasure of seeing, in exact accordance with previous prediction. The weather was unusually favorable for observation, with a pleasant breeze, and an elastic atmosphere, and scarcely a cloud visi ble through the whole day. We commenced our observations with the Barometer and Thermometers, at about 1 o’clock, P. M., and recorded them every 15 minutes. The Barometer varied very little, standing pretty uniformly at 30.01 inches, which re duced, by making allowance for tempera ture, gives an altitude of 20.88 iuehes, due to Atmospheric pressure. The Standard Thermometer, in the shade, was 70 degrees at 1 o’clock, It rose to 78 de grees at a quarter past 3, and then stood at j 1 ift 1* 1 . J 14 uegrees 1111 me ecnpse was emicu. The thermometer, with a blackened bulb, i placed on a black ground, uni exposed to the direct rays of the Sun, rose to 144 de grees at quarter past 3, it then gradually tell till half past 5, when it was down to 100. after which it rose till quarter past 0, when it stood at 110 degrees. In the shade, the tee/ bulb thermometer, j previous to the commencement of the Eclipse, was ten degrees below the dry hull). 1 he difference was least at 45 minutes past 5, i when it was 7 degrees below the dry bull). When the Thermometers were suspended, and exposed to the suushine and a free cur rent vf air, the greatest difference was 14 de grees, which was pretty constant from 3 to 4 j o’clock, at which time the dry bull) was S5o degrees, and the wet bulb 7 U. fhe differ ence was least at 45 minutes past o, when the dry bulb was 70, and the wet at Oi de- i grees—showing a difference of 0 degrees. The black bulb suspended in the air, was j highest at a quarter past 4, when it rose to . 90i, at half past 5 it had fallen to 78. and at - quarter past 0 it rose again to 83 degrees. Efforts were made with the Telescope to see the edge of the Moon, previous to its con tact with the Sun, in accordance with the suggestion of Delisle, the correctness of. which suggestion was partially verified du- : ring the Eclipse of 1851 ; hut the glasses we used to protect the eye were too dark to reu derour efforts successful. The 8un being so much larger than the moon, it must ne cessarily illuminate more than one half of that body at the same instant, in consequence of which, at or near the time of conjunction, a j border of the thus illuminated surface of the moon, would be towards the earth broadest on the part nearest the sun, and could, no doubt, under favorable circumstances, and with a proper means of protecting the eye, be seen. As the muon traversed the sun’s disc, minute dark points were seen to project I from the moon’s edge on to the surface ot the Sun. Experiments were made with the prism to determine if any difference could be observed during the Eclipse, in the relative proportion of the red and violet rays of the spectrum, i through the rrJ'rQeUw influence of a lunar j atmosphere, or the insertion of light by the moon’s surface, but no such difference could be detected. Several interesting drawings were made by the Students, of the lights and shades through j the leaves of the trees, giving beautiful ex hibitions of the Eclipse in its different phases. The shadow of a ball, too, was very pecu liar, exhibiting an enlarged penumbra on the same side with the eclipsed portion ot the Sun. It was remarkable that not a single .solar 8|>ot was visible with our Telescope, during the day, a circumstance we have not knowu before for many years. At the time of greatest obscuration, the aspect of things was peculiarly soft ami po etical, which was not a little heightened by the \ clearness of the atmosphere, and the fresh ness of vegetatiou. Two little birds (all we saw') went to nx>st, one placing its head be neath its wing, in true evening posture: but it was soon roused by returning brightness. To witness a phenomenon of so sublime a character as that of a Solar Eclipse, occur- | riug at the very instant that hail long been foretold by calculation, especially when it is i iTceollected, that this calculation has to bal ance the various influences producing irregu- j .laritie* in the movements of the moon, aud Apparent positions of the Sun, arising not .ouly from the perpetual change in the distan ces and angular positions of the three bodies —the Sun, Earth and Moon, which cause a constant alteration, in both the direction and amount of the disturbing forces, but also from similar disturbances by the influence of each of the different planets of our System, cannot fail to awaken feelings of pleasure, mingled with awe and grandeur, to inspire the spectator with increased confidence in : the harmony and stability of the Universe, and in that power by which it is governed, I , and to give a more elevated opinion of the iu- i toilectual powers with which man has been endowed by bis Creator, that thus enable ■ him, with such perfect precision, to make the j predictions. Perhaps thejull effect of this, I can be realized by those only, who are ho- ( quainted with the intricacy of the Problem, i but it must, to some Jojjrec, bo folt by all. The forty-ninth Senate amendment was read by the Clerk, as follows: i Srr. 5. Ami lx x* fttrthrr enoetnt. That the compensation ! uf thr specW mail ajrent of the I V*st Office lVpnrtniont in ! California l<e p*-r annum: su-h rate to take in virtue of tfci* provision frvui .luh 1, After def*ate, >lr. Smith, of Virginia. I move to reduce the appropriation $100. 1 rise, Mr. Chairman, without any interest in this question other than that which apper tains to the members of this House. I have no feeling in the question—none in the world; hut I have some experience of California, having gone there to pursue my private for tunes, and having returned after a pleasant and agreeable trip. I say to this body, from personal knowledge, that it is indispensi ble, and perhaps more so in that country than in any other portion of the Union, that tins officer should be a man of the very highest character. He has jurisdiction over con tracts. He lias a great power of collusion: and unless lie be protected by a great deal of integrity out there, where every man goes to make his pile, and where it is honest enough to make money anv how— Mr. Walsh. Y ou went to make your pile? Mr. Smith. I went to make my pile, but ! to make it honestly. A great many go there ! tor a umereiu purpose, aim, as 1 kuow, espe cially from New York. Well, sir, this being the case, it is necessa ry to secure a man of high character. You canuot do that for the present salary. In j this particular case 1 desire the House to un derstand that there is no proposition to in- j crease the per diem. A man here gets $1,000 per annum, and $*J per day for his travelling j expenses. In this case he is to get $5,000 per annum, and only $*J per diem. The $*2 1 per diem will not pay for drinks. ! Laughter.] I tell gentlemen that the man who is hearty there has to nay very high for his living. 1 have seen many a miner pay $- 50 for his breakfast. You have to pay a quarter of a dollar apiece for eggs, a half of a dollar for a beef steak, seventy-tivecents for a partridge; and when a fellow gets thirsty, he has to pay a quarter of a dollar for a drink, and short measure at that. What* does the gentleman from New York [Mr. Walsh j think of that? j Laughter, j Mr. Wai.sii. What kind of drinks? Mr. Smith. Good stiff drinks, and a quar ter of a dollar apiece. 1 mention these things to show that there is no comparison in point of importance—and 1 speak in sincere can dor to the ge tleman from New York—be tween this officer and the baited States as sayerat S.ui Francisco. One sits in his room, ■ performs light and easy duties, while the : other has to brave the tempests, hud roads, \ and all the dangers pictured a while ago by ! mv friend from Pennsylvania, [Mr. McNair, j ; Five thousand dollars is not one cent too j much. There are many officers, clerks ot i the Government, who get more. M hat do j you think of the naval officer getting ss.ooo per annum? lie is not nigh as responsible | an officer as this one, judging from the in- j cum bent. Mr. Houston. I was at first inclined to vote for tiiis amendment: hut if $- 50 per j duv is required to furnish the officer with | drinks. I am of the opiniou that it had better ; be voted down. I shall vote against it. Mr. Smith. 1 am greatly surprised that .. ..L.% t « r.F 4 '.nnmittna i if W o «*4J n awl ( an v vnan uiun vi uiv vviumuvvvv Means could be found to give such a reason lor his vote. The amendment was withdrawn, lhe question now being on concurring in the amendment of the Senate, Mr. Mcl>on:.\u. demanded tellers. Tellers were not ordered. The question was theu put: and it was de- j elded in the negative. THE MILITARY CALLED OCT! Gin:a t excitemext : Boston', May 27.—There was a most fear ful riot in this city at a late hour last even ing. The public mind is in a dreadful state of excitement and apprehension, and there is no telling when or how the matter will end. The riot grew out of the abolition demon stration which has been made, and which is still making, in regard to the fugitive Slave Case, from Virginia. A public meeting, as I have already ap prised you, was held in the early p*‘trt ot tne evening, it was attended by an immense concourse of people, whose passions were in flamed to the highest degree by the incendi ary harangues of the speakers. While this feelimr was rairinir insido and outside of the meeting, a collision took place between the abolition fanatics and the author ities, aided by such citizens as felt disposed to preserve order at all hazards. The Deputy U. S. Marshal was shot dead on the spot, and other citizens were seriously, if not dangerously wounded. The military were called out, and it was only hv the most determined exertions that something like order was restored. This morning, at 9 o’clock, the examination of the fugitive slave, Burns, was resumed before the United States Commissioner.
