The surplus of box rents in the post office at San Francisco is such an extraordinary sum, and the yearly increase so great over | anything on record in the General Post Oi tice, that we give it in the official figures, as j one of the remarkable facts in the progress of I California—the political, financial, and social miracle of the world. The amount paid into the treasury, deduct | ing the postmaster’s allowance, for the third | quarter of 1851, was $2,489. For the first quarter of 1854, $7,650! And it is the opinion of Colonel Henley. ' the efficient j postmaster of Sau Francisco, ! (who is nowiu this city,)thatthe surplus box rents for 1855 will realize$40,000. Tliebox i os are arranged with lock and key, so that each holder helps himself without delay. Some boxes pay as high as $40 a year. He then seized I Beach, knocked him down, and secured him. Burns, the Fugitive Slave, will be remanded to his master, who will bring him home. Boston, May 20, 1} P. M.—The fugitive slave, Burns, was brought out this morning at the opening of the court under a strong guard. The examination in the ease has commenced. An immense crowd of persons are outside, and occasionally loud shouting may be heard, but as yet no violent outbreak has taken place. A strong military force still continues in and about the Court House, under arms. A strong police is also ready for any emer gency. The State soldiery will protect the city against the mob. The United States military from the navy yard and the ship Ohio are also in attend ance, protecting the prisoner in the court house. The evidence of Burns being the slave of Col. Suttle is positive. He certainly will be remanded. It is now understood that the soldiers will tire on the mol), without any hesitation, in case of another outbreak. This impression having been made upon the crowd, it is believed will prevent further outrages, A large crowd are now about the Court House, agitating the subject. Boston, 4 P. M.—The excitement is in creasing. The Abolitionists have been strengthened by the arrival of the Freedom Club of six hundred, from Salem. The Court took a recess of half an hour, and then resumed the examination. A dif ficulty is apprehended to-night. Burns will certainly be remanded. The proof is posi tive.
