The Chief Engineer stated that his estimates and specifications would be ready bv the 14th of October, when the Board resolved that they , would, so soon as they should be reported, proceed forthwith to contract for the neces sary graduation, masonry, and bridging, be tween this city and Clarke’s Gap, in the county of Loudoun, a distance of forty miles. There were two alarms of tire, in this city, on Tuesday night. About 1>> o’clock, it was discovered that some one had hoisted a win dow iu a house occupied by Mr. Clapdore, on Fairfax street, (north end,) and communica ted tire to the clothes lying in a cradle. The tiames were extinguished without much damage. About half past one o’clock, tire was seen in a pile of coal in the yard of A. .Jamieson & Co.’s Bake House, on Water street, (north end.) This was, also, fortu nately promptly extinguished, without loss. New Yoke, Sept. 27.—The l\ S. mail i steamship George Law arrived this morning from Aspinwall, with a large number of pas sengers and the California mails. Her news, principally, has been anticipated by the arrival of the Prometheus. She brings S 1,250,000 in gold on freight. Later advices from Peru have been receiv ed. It was reported that the insurrectionists j had captured President Keheneque. From Mexico we learn that Gen. Alvarez, at the head of a considerable force, was I marching towards the city of Mexico. A letter from Acapulco states that Vera Cru/. had pronounced in favor of Alvarez. We do not usually receive our news from \ era Cruz by the way of the Pacific ocean. Broekett, Massey, Bryan, Simp son, and Fowle. The following order was received from the Common Council, and concurred in, viz:— Ordered, That the Superintendent of Po lice be instructed to notilv Mr. J.F. M. Lowe, to have removed the back building of the house, known as Swann’s Plaister Mill, and if the same shall not he dune, the said Super intendent of Police, shall remove the same, and charge the expense t*» Mr. Lowe. The bill entitled “An Act to provide for numbaring the City of Alexandria," which was laid on the table at tin* last meeting of the Board, was then taken up, read, and on motion, laid on the table. Mr. Fowle, on leave, introduced a hill en titled “An Act amendatory of an Act, in ad dition to an Act, passed Max* 24th, 18od, for the improvement and enlargement ot the Gas Works," passed on the 11th April, 1854, which was read a first and second time, and on motion, was laid upon the table. An order was received Irom the Common Council, fur the payment ot the bill of Pr. Powell, which was referred to the Committee on General Laws. An order was received from the Common Council, for the remission of a Tavern Li cense, charged against George Berry, which was referred to the Committee on General Laws. The petition of J. M. Boseberry & Co., xvas received from the Common Council, and referred to the Committee on General Laws. The petition of sundry citizens for opening Cameron street, from Washington to Colum bus street, xvas referred to the Committee on Grades. On motion of Mr. Fowle, the action of this Board m relation to the petition ot J. 31. Koseberrv & Co., was re-considered, and the action oi the Common Council in reference to said matter, concurred in, viz: to refer it to the Assessors, with instructions to assess Messrs. Koseberrv it Co., in accordance with the character of their business, or in such manner as they may deem just and proper. An order for paving the gutter in front of Mrs. Morrell’s property, on Pitt street, was received from the Common Council, and re ferred to the Committee on Grades. An order was received from the Common Council for the appointment ot proxies to represent tie* Corporation in the meetings of the Stockholders of the Middle Turnpike Company, the Orange and Alexandria Kail Koad Company, and the Manassas Gap Rail Koad Company, which order was concurred in, and the following members appointed on the part of this Board, viz:— .Middle Turnpike Company, Messrs. White, President; Marked, Green, Beach, Lambert, Hallowed, Mar bury, Mc Cormick, Reid, Winner, and Lcadbeater. Mr. McCormick, fiom the Committee on General Laws submitted, a report, declaring the assessment of J. M. Kosonlterry & Co., illegal, and asking a reference of the subject to the assessors with instructions to assess the parties in such manner as they may deem just and proper. Mr. McCormick presented a medical bill of Hr. Powell, against the Corporation, of 8-0, which on motion was ordered to be paid. A communication was received from M m. II. Kogvrs, esq., resigning bis place as a member of this branch of the City Council, which was read and his resignation accepted. Un motion of Mr. Keid, it was. Ordered, That the tax of 81 h-vied upon John S. Barbour, esq., be remitted, lie not being chargeable with such tax.
