AMITTATIOX AT THE HIP JOINT.
The New Brunswick Daily News gives the
particulars of a remarkable surgical operath n
ujK»n the person of a German employed at
Snuff Mill on Lawrence Brook, who, in adjust
ing a belt over a drum w as caught l*y the strap
winding roung the leg between the knee and
the ankle; his body was carried over the
shaft and coining in contact with the beams
above, the limb was torn from the body at
the hi}*—leaving the limb fastened by the
belt above t<* the shaft, and tlie body fell on
the floor some ten feet distant. The case
presented such an unpromising aspect
that the surgeon shrunk from attempiug to
do anv thing. But considering it to he the
only chance the poor fellow had—Mr. M<»r
rogh, assisted bv Drs. Taylor ami Leighton,
performed the operation. The thigh hone
was broken off about two inches below its in
sertion into the socket. 1 he head of this
hone was unjointed, (bis-articulated.) and a
clean surface made of the torn muscles, ten
duns, bloodvessels, &c. It was found neces
sary to tie three large arteries, which, upon
being cut, spouted out blood w'th the full vig
or of health. The few small patches of skin
that were left by the accident were drawn
over the stump, "and dressed with adhesive
strip* and bandages. The poor fellow, af
ter being placed in bed, expressed his grati
tude, and said he felt ‘very comfortable/
On visitiiig him the next day, re-action had
taken place in a slight degree, and his pros
pect appeared rather more favorable. But
the shock to bis system was too much, ami
death supervened about forty hours alter the
accident.
