This is the greatest enemy the farmer has to contend with, and the lateness of the harvest increases the chance of injury from its inroads. The weather of late has been showery and sul try. On Sunday afternoon an inch of raiu fell here in the short space of twelve mio 1 utes. It did great injury to the north of us, to the corn fields and fences. Scarce t a wheat field has been cut in Frederick, and but little harvest work will be done before the comiug week. In Shenandoah I and the counties above, much of the wheat 1 is in shock, but with no flattering prospect of a good yield. We hear of a farmer iu Clarke who means to start three reaping uia 1 chines to-morrow, though the crop in that fertile county we are iuformed will not ex ceed an average of six bushels to the acre. Such, we regret to say is also the character of the crop in Frederick.— Win. Virginian. Enterprise. The Harpers had the bill for their new building, amounting to two hundred thou sand dollars, sent in a few days ago for pay- | ineut. Besides the building, are thirty-three j presses, which cost about two thousand dot I iars each, a variety of other machinery, en- * gines, stock, ito. The new premises have been occupied a little more than a month.— 1 Not far from six hundred persons are em- j i ployed, aud most of the valuable standard works have already been reprinted. The ■ scale of operations is about the same as be- j fore the conflagration, hut the facilities tor manufacturing are greatly improved. Polish Exiles. In 18o4 an act of Congress was passed, [ granting certain lands to the Polish exiles j who came to tiis country in an Austrian 1 frigate. It turned out that the lands selec- J ; ted for them were claimed by preemption ists, | | and in behalf of the latter, Congress iuter | posed by a law—1842. I ruler these circum ' stances, while the claims of the Poles stand i admitted on the statute book, the Executive i ' has no power to afford them relief, unless ! Congress shall further legislate by specifying the manner in which the claim shall be sat isfied.— Washington Star. Hospital for the lu»ane. Iu Naples, Spain and Piedmont, a short crop. With regard to Lombardy, the accounts arc conflicting, but such cases of failure that are reported appear to be local. In the markets, both at St. Etieune and Lyons the transactions ap pear very active, and prices are well main tained. WatcH Manufactory. Watches, equal to the best imported, are manufactured in the suburban town ot Waltham, Mass. The prices for which these | are sold range from $20 to $200 each, at re tail. A large building lias been erected on the south side of Charles river, which is kept ! closed against intrusive eyes. The company is doing a large business, and the day is not tar distant, we apprehend, when Waltham watches will be as famous and valuable as the best from London, Paris, and the Euro pean cities generaHy^^^^^ Don’t do It.
