THE GAZETTE. WEDNESDAY MORNING. January 30, AN AMATEUR'S RECITATION. Ommclkton. Jan. 7. l-SoO.—Having been i a valetudinarian for more than two months j the abundant leisure coueequent has nude | me quite a quill-driver, though in a dif- | fere at sense from iny usual occupation at this season of the year. It would be driving goose-quill in both instances, however, and what does it matter whether I drive another ; goose's or niv owu. Not to be able to bring Sown some ot the Hock this winter is rather ; provoking, but I don't neglect my duty when they're cooked, which is a slight consolation. But, turning from the geese to nos mentions, 1 was about to say that, having scribbled a good deal, l have bethought me that, in re turn for the many excellent feasts l have enjoyed in the “Spirit’’ with you, l might offer in a spirit of gratitude, a slight bit of game which I have “brought down” on pa par in this wild region. You should first he informed that the settle ment of Onemuleton is situated on a fine river, and is a place inhabited by people whose money, hearts, and souls, are wrapped up in trade which the river brings them, it they visit a place of amusement, it is more to •it and rest themselves than to enjoy or criticise the performance; so that whatever comes along, has a fair chance ot a hearing throughout. At any rate one might think *o, after hearing through the following reci tation. A band of minstrels giving a series of en tertainments, had allowed one of tho histri onically inclined youths ot the town to be announced fora recitation from “Douglas.’ — Expecting fun, I went—and tuQ I had. I be lieve mv buttons took it rather seriously though/ The recitation was the speech of Norval before Earl and Lady Douglas. My perfect knowledge of the speech enables me (o recollect, I believe, verbatim, every mis take and prompting that was made. After some tolerable music from the band, Mr. John Stage Strucke was announced as Norval. Before he made his appearance, however, a word or two of conference stole over the screen which served to divide, not hide, the performers trom the performed (or done). It proceeded, audible to the whole house, in this way— Norval (very nervous voice i—Please hold the book in vourhand and prompt me if I should go wrong. I’m perfect, but may be 1 might not know it all. Prompter—Do you feel nervous? Norvai (in most agitated mauner)—No—n not a bit—but—a—you know. Ah ! Here goes! (Eutera with a perfect rueh.) W. BARKER. iyr o q r a c k e r y.—prescotts a LANT//S FJMILY MEI)JCL\KS—]n presenting the»e preparations to the public, the proprietors are aware ol the prejudices which they must expect to encounter. The country is deluged w ith quack nostrums, each claiming to be the ne plus ultra—the medicine ofall medi cines, and are pushed into notice by the aid of printer's ink. with a zeal worthy of a better cause, notwithstanding all that has been said and the essays written against their use by the profession, and out of the profession. Indeed so prevalent has become the mania for quackery, that a recent writer, a man of eminence in the medical profession, strongly advises that the subject be let alone. ‘ It exists, says he. “in every walk and occupation of life, by the exer cise of which men procure bread,'’ and thinks it time wasted to endeavor to stem the tide. We have long since thought that the only ef fectual method o! counteracting this strong cur rent of quackery is to place in the hands 01 the people re^ulai Medicines, prepared in accordance with the rules laid down by the different colleges of Pharmacy. When our prairies and mountains catch on fire, and the inhabitants behold the devouring element sweeping towards their devoted homes, what do they do* Do they vainly endeavor to stop its progress by throwing a few buckets ol water on it? By no means! I hey build up counter files which rush forth to meet the ap proaching torrent of dame, and by exhausting its food, put a stop to its ravages, or turn it out of its course. Now this is precisely what we are trying to do. The counter Jire which we are kindling consists in presenting to the public, Medicines, which are prepared according to the laws of science—from formula* given by the Tinted States Pharmacopeia, except in two or three instances, w here they were obtained from regular physicians of high standing m the medi cal profession. They are prepared from the best of drugs, under the superintendence ol a regular physician. Tor testimonials of their efficacy in the treat ment of the various diseases for which they ate recommended, we tcould refer tu the whole medical profession throughout (lie world. We bring for ward no certificates from obscure individuals, stating that they have been cured o! all manner of incurable diseases, deeming it an insult to the intelligence ol the community to try to paint off such stuff upon them. If these medicines are humbugs, then medical science is a humbug. N. B. Pamphlets treating of the various dis eases for which these medicines are applicable, may be had of any of our agents gratuitously.
