TILE G AZETTE. SATURDAY MORNING, APRIL 2«, 1^5 THE FAMOUS COLUMN OF CONSTAN TINOPLE. Excavations have lately been made at Con stantinople in order to uncover the column which lies buried in the ground between the Obelisk and the Hippodrome. It is the fa mous column which Gibbon calls a very e.£ gular fragment of antiquity, and which he deHcribee as “the bodies of three serpents twisted into one pillar of brass." T he gnar nSof the meet holy places l,e«y*,"*ould rejoice if they were able to pnduoesuch a chain ot evidence a* may be alleged on thia occasion. The original consecration of the tripod and pillar in the t emple of Delphi luavhe proved from Herodotus and Pausa uia's. The Pagan Losimus agree* with the three ecclesiastical Historians, fcusebius. Sot rates and Sazomen, that the sacred ornameuts of the Temple of Delphi were removed to Constantinople by the order ot toiistontiu®, and among these the serpentine pillar of the Hippodrome is particularly mentioned. All the European travellers who have visited C on stantinople, from Bouudelmonte to Booooke. describe it in the same place, and almost in the same manner. Mahomet II broke the under jaw of one of the serpents with a stroke of his battle-axe." . . ... The last link has just been added to tins chain of evidence. It was kuown from He rodotus that, after the battle of Plata-«, this brass column, supporting a golden tripod, had been erected at Delphi, and the ancient historian mentions particularly that the name Oi the Teoians (the inhabitants of Tenos. a small island near Delos) was placed among the names engraved on the tripod, because by giving the first news of the approach of the army of Xerxes, they were considered as hav ing contributed to the defeat of the Bavar ian. The tripod is lost aud it is known that it was carried off by the Pboca&ans.^ But on that part of the column which has just been disinterred, a few faint traces of inscriptions were discovered. On the second spiral line all that could be read was amprak.. fo.., and it is impossible to tiod any meaning in these disjointed letters. But on the seventh coil of the serpents, a corious accident has pre served the very name of the Teuians, for there can be little doubt that teno.. which is all that can be read, »n spue or me corromuu which has destroyed this ancient monument,. is the name of the inhabitants of the little island of Tenos, whose honorable mention among the conquerors of Xerxes seemed to require explanation as early as the time of Herodotus.—Athenceju m. GRAMMAR^IN RHYME. We advise every little grammarian just en- | tering on Murray, Brown, or any of the thou sand grammars in use, to commit to memory the following easy lines, and then they never need to mistake a part of speech : 1. Three little words you often see Are articles—a, an, and the. 2. A Noun's the name of any thing, As school or garden, hoop or swing. 3. Adjective stell the kind of Noun, As great, small, pretty, white or brown. 4. Instead of Nouns the pronouns stand— Her head, his lace, your arm, my hand. 5. Verbs tell something being done— To read, count, sing, jump or run. 6. How things are done the Adverbs tell— As slowly, quickly, ill or well. 7. Conjunction join the words together— As men and women, wind or weather. 8. The Preposition stands before A Noun, as in or through a door. 9. The Intevjeetion shows surprise, As Oht how pretty; ah! how wise. The whole are called Nine Parts of Speech, Which Reading, Writing, Speaking teach. COULD NOT SEE TO READ. An amusing incident occurred to Mr. Ware, the ocoulist. He had performed the operation of couching, upon a poor old wo mau. After it was over, Mr. W. inquired of his patient whether she could read a book of tolerably sited print, which he opened before her. "No, sir, I cannot read it," replied the dame. . Down she was set in the chair again, and Mr. W. succeeded in removing another coat of him from her eyes. "Can you read it now, my good woman ?" said he. "No, sir—no, sir, I cannot." "Very extraordinary !" cried the occulist, throwing down his instrument, "very ex traordinary, indeed! Cannot you see to read at all ?" "No, sir, no," rejoined the old lady; "hut perhaps it may be because I never learned to read at all!"_ DRs7g?LBERT & KENNEDY treat Can cers, Tumors, Ulcers, &c., without Surgi C*\ Onerations, office 746 Broadway, corner As tor Place, New York. The country sdeluged with quack nostrums, each claiming [obe the ne plus utra—the medicine of all medi cines. and are pushed into notice by the aid of printer's ink, with a zeal worthy of a better cause, notwithstanding all that has been said And the essays written against their use by the profession, and out of the profession. Indeed so prevalent has become the mania tor quackery, that a recent writer, a man of eminence in the medical profession, strongly advjses that the ♦object be let alone. “It exists," says he, “in every w alk and occupation ot life, by the exer cise of which men procure bread." and thinks it time wasted to endeavor to stem the tide. We have long since thought that the only ef fectual method ot counteracting this strong cur rent of quackery i» to place in the hands ot the people regWor Medicines, prepared in accordance with the rules laid down by the different colleges ot Pharmacy. , When our prairies and mountains eaten on fire, ami the inhabitants behold the devouring element sweeping towards their devoted homes, what do they do* Do they vainly endeavor to Stop its progress by throwing a tew* buckets ot water on it* By »o means! They build up counter fires which rush forth to meet the ap proaching torrent ot flame, and by exhausting its food, put a stop to its ravages, or turn it out of its course. Now’ this is precisely what we are trying to do. The counter fire which we are kindling consists in presenting to the public, Medicines, which are prepared according to the laws of science—from formulae given by the Uuited States Pharmacopeia, except in two or three instances, where they were obtained from regular physicians of high standing in the medi cal profession. They are prepared from the best of drugs, under the superintendence ol a regular physician. For testimonials of their etficaey in the treat ment of the various diseases for w hich they are recommended, we would refer to the whole medical profession throughout the tcorld. We bring lor ward no certificates from obscure individuals, stating that they have been cured of all manner of incurable diseases, deeming it an insult to! the intelligence of the community to try to palm off such stuff upon them. If these medicines are humbugs, then medical science is a humbug. N. B.
