THE GAZETTE. THURSDAY MORNING, AUGUST 14, isrc COMPARATIVE LONGEVITY OF WHITES AND BLACKS. The Southern Medical Journal of Febru ary, referring to the mortality statistics of! the late census, remarks: “These documents sustain the general im pression that the African lives longer than the Caucasian race, one hundred whites and one hundred and forty-eight blacks being repor ted as having died of old age. Although we do not mean to deny the correctness of the received opinion, we yet believe that it is ex aggerated. Age has advantages to the negro which are not experienced by the whites, and its immunities are generally claimed by the slave long before bis master would think ot resting from bis labors. Hence it is, that very many of our slaves, when .sixty years of age, imagine or declare that they are eighty or ninety years of age, and are accor dingly indulged with an exemption from fur ther compulsory labor. Many of the citi aene of tbie place may recollect “old daddy Quash/1 who averred, apparently in good faith, that he was so old, that when he arri ved here from Africa, the Sa>annah river was so small a stream that he could “step over it/1 He thought himself one hundred and fifty years of age, but was probably not more than ninety-five when he died. THE CITY BETTER than tiie COUNTRY. The graceful editor of the “Easy Chair,” in Harper1® Magazine, indulges in some pleasantry at the city fashionables, who mi grate to the country and the watering places in search of comfort in the hot summer, lie consoles himself (possibly like the fox in the fable) that thev have the worst of the bar gain, and his sage reflections may bring a •pice of comfort to the discontented ones, who long to join the general exodus, but can’t He says of the migrating citizens, some of whom “have gone to the little farm houses in little hot valleys, where the sun biases all day, and the mo quitoes buzz and sing all night.” “Poor people! what have they done? Vi hy should they be driven from these high streets in which lofty buildings shut out the sun? Why are they banished from these houses with spacious rooms into which no sun pene trates, upon whose floor are cool mattings, at an find sofas draned in suggestive drillings. Here C roton flows from the affluence of Liebfraumlick, from the crushed grapes of Khine vineyards; here rare birds sing in cages ; green trees w ave before the windows ; the ice-man calls aloud his refreshing merchandise : and for a table spread with a clean white cloth in the dim, lofty and cool dining room, around which stand statues marbly calm, inspiring peace and tranquil thought, the hot country has seot its fairest vegetables and fruits and flowers. Coolness and calmness are the city’s dowry io the dog days. hat has everybody done that everybody should be deprived of these delights? “In the evening “everybody” is dancing into a white heat at the gay resorts, or going to a straw-bed at nine o’clock, to tight with the mosquitoes and toss into a lever, in the little hot cottages in the little hot valleys. But the city sallies forth clad in sw eet linen and in light shoes—for there is no dew’, no mud, no draggling in wet grass and slipping on marshy ground here—and by the light of faithful day-emulating gas—for there is no darkness, no pitching into trees, and tumb ling over stumps, an J stubbing against stones here—the city seats itself in a bower like those Mohammed designed for houris in Par adise, and there it touches the pastoral stoop of the cobbler, or tastes the sweetest country flavor in odorous mint. Close at hand gush es the sparkling stream of soda, like the bright rivers Arbana and Pharpar; the fumes of Mocha inspire the air; the cheerful pop of the beer bottle plays through the whole like the foot-beat of happy hours pas sing over, and that mildest of muddlers, lager, pours ita slow, clouded current by. No mos quitoes ; no hot dancing; no sharp draughts: do mud; no draggling dews; but lager and luxury, cobblers and calm.” THE LONDON TIMES. It may not be generally known, says a ' cotemporary, that the leader of the “limes” is telegraphed every morning to all the prin cipal towns of England; then written out in large letters and affixed to a bulletin board, mod is placed in the public Exchange. At Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, and other Iqjhh of less commercial importance, crowds of merchants and others may be seen early in the day reading this article! As it thus, in effect, does the thinking for the mass of the middle classes of Great Britain, its influence with them must be very great. It is diffi cult, in fact, to understand its extent and power, which no class, we presume, and not •tea the government itself, fails to acknow ledge. ____ &r CAMP MEETING NOTICE —A Camp Muutina will he held on the OLD UNION CAMP GROUND, in the charge of the M. NO QUACKERY—PRESCOTT S & LANTZ’S FAMILY MEDICINES—In presenting these preparations to the public, the proprietors are aware of the prejudices which they must expect to encounter. The country is deluged with quack nostrums, each claiming to be the ne plus ultra—the medicine ofall medi cines, and are pushed into notice by the aid of printer’s ink, with a zeal worthy of a better cause, notw ithstanding all that has been said and the essays written against their use by the profession, and out of the profession. Indeed so prevalent has become the mania for quackery, that a recent writer, a man of eminence in the medical profession, strongly advises that the subject be let alone. “It exists,” says he, “in every walk and occupation of life, by the exer cise of which men procure bread,” and thinks it time w asted to endeavor to stem the tide. We have long since thought that the only ef fectual method ol counteracting this strong cur 1 rent of quackery is to place in the hands of the people regular Medicines, prepared in accordance with the rules laid down by the different colleges of Pharmacy. When our prairies and mountains catch on fire, and the inhabitants behold the devouring element sweeping towards their devoted homes, what do they do? Do they vainly endeavor to stop its progress by throwing a fewT buckets of water on it? By no means! They build up counter fires w’hich rush forth to meet the ap proaching torrent of flame, and by exhausting its food, put a stop to its ravages, or turn it out of its cousse. Now this is precisely what we are trying to do. The counter fire which we are kindling consists in presenting to the public, Medicines, which are ppepared according to the laws of science—from formu 1* given by the United States Pharmacopoeia, except in tw o or three instances, where they were obtained from regular physicians of high standing in the medi cal profession. They are prepared from the : best of drugs, under the superintendence of a j regular physician. For testimonials of their efficacy in the treat- j ment of the various diseases for which they are recommended, we would refer to the whole medical profession throughout the tvorld. We bring ior ! ward no certificates from obscure individuals, stating that they have been cured of all manner of incurable diseases, deeming it an insult to i the intelligence of the community to try to palm [ off such stuff upon them. If these medicines are humbugs, then medical science is a humbug. N. B.
