THE GAZETTE. FRIDAY MORNING, Pkcbmber 19, 1856. DANIEL WEBSTER. By the majority of his fellow-citizens, Mr. Webster was ever regarded as a cold and for bidding man; as dwelling apart from ordina ry mortals, as it were, in a chilling and ex alted region of great ideas and perceptions; a* little alive to the minor affairs of life, and having small sympathy with the feelings and emotions of the great roas9 of mankind.— Bat, as seen in bis correspondence, he appears an eminently genial and sympathetic friend and companion. From that severe and truthful mirror of his every day habits and characteristics, be is reflected as a man who entered with zest into the oornmon enjoy ments and social delights of the h >me circle. To see such an -intellectual Titau releasing his grapple upon the mightiest questions of iumcato statesmanship, and joining in the ordinary pleasures of the domestic fireside; to see the same pen which has just written a protocol, calculated to disturb for awbi.e the equilibrium of two continents, flying over the paper in a playful missive to John Tay lor at Marshfield, is as refreshing as to wit ness the gladsome unrestraint ot” a sovereign escaped from the joyless solitude of a court and permitted a brief momeut of commu nion with his early associates. The posses sion of commanding qualities, like the digui ty of empire, seems to isolate men from their fellow-beings and to cut them off from the unreserved interchange of sentiments which belongs to equai friendship. Two remarkable gifts Mr. Webster ap pears, from hw letters and his other writings, to have possessed in a degree beyond that of any other statesman of his time—an acute perception ot th£ beauties of nature aud an exhaustless wealth of imagination. No ab sorption of his faculties by public business, no cares ot State, no pressure of official du ties, no disappointment ot cherished hopes and ambition, sufficed to render him insensi ble to the glories of the autumn woods, and of the morning sky, and of “old Ocean's grey, illimitable waste." And if to inter pret nature to common understandings be one of the highest qualities of the poet then was Mr. Webster a poet as true as any who have recorded their inspiration in trochees and dactyls aud hexameters. There is scarce ly any memorable effort of his intellect that U >es not recognise some bright manifestation of nature. The well-remembered allusion “1 li.rrkV ul»n,, in hi* ftt Rich mond in 1840—his letter on sunrise written several years afterwards from the same city —the magnificent tribute to England in w hich he represents heir reveille as “follow ing the sun and keeping company with the • hours,” and that striking speech of live min ute*, made from the windows of his resi dence in Washington the night after Scott’s liominati <u had defeated forever his aspira tions for the Presidency, wherein he introdu ced the lark rising up to greet the earliest purpling of the east—these are some of the fre q lent allusions to uatuie’s objects of beauty and sublimity scattered through the efforts of his tougue aud peu, which rise to our menu ry at the instant. No man was ever more impressed with Niagara than he, and n) oue has described it with half his sim plicity and power. He was himself a Niag ara among men, awe and majesty enthroned upon his brow and the iris forever playing rs. uml about him. Tue gloria of imagination (if we may use such phrase) which is poured over the spee ches and even the official papers of Mr. Webster, will re«cure his name surely from the oblivion which awaits the names of men who made an equal impress upon their nge. lie renders his compositions models for rhetorical studies and superadds to the Tt putation ho acquired, as a statesman and diplomatist, that other more ©udunng fame which attaches to literary distinction. This fame is not, indeed, the most envied of men but it certainly will outlive any which shines along the pathway of illustrious deeds. Mr. Webster's orations will live long after the conflicts and political Agitations in which he movi d have been shrouded in the dim twi light through which we of the 19th century look back at the times of liameses the Fifth. What truly do we know of that monarch, whose other name of Sesostris, is sometimes used to point a moral or round a period, in comparison with a certain blind old itinerant minstrel who went about Greece, at the same time, singing of the white neck of Helen and the fall of Troy? Homer survives in num berless translations, but the great conqueror, is forgotten. “For have not the verses of Ho mer,” says Lord Baoou, in his advancement of learning, “continued twenty-five hun dred years aud more, without the lo§3 of a syllable or letter, during which time infinite palaces, temples, castles, cities, have been decayed and demolished! It is not possible to have the true pictures of Cyrus, Alexan der. C.vsar; not of Kings or great peonages of much later years, for the originals cannot last, and the copies cannot but lose all of their life and truth. But the image ot men’s wit and knowledge remains in books, exemp ted from the wrongs of time and capable ot ._. i _” n.*U i »> LADIES FESTIVAL.—The Ladies connected with the Sewing Society attached to the Methodist Episcopal Church, (as heretofore announced.) will hold a FKS11\AL at JREPTJ HJLL, commencing on MON DJI K\ ENING NEXT, 10/A instunt, and continuing throughout the w eek, for the benefit of the Home Minion Chwhcu, on the corner ot Princess ai d Patrick stieets. R.—RADWAY S READY RE LIEF Remedies have been before the public so | long, have performed so many miraculous I cures, ha\e restored so many thousands of weak, feeble. and dying invalids to robust health, have protected whole neighborho xls from sudden at tacks of raging pestilence, have been tested and tried with the most astonishing success in the mo»t difficult cases that hospital practice and the i prevalence of Yellow Fever, Spotted Fever, j ! Typhus Fever. Scarlet Fever. Billious Fever, i Pneumonia l-holera, and other malignant disor j ders could furnish, and that, too, by the most ] celebrated Physicians and Medical Writers in j this country, among whom we may mention the I ; names of Page, Stone, Gillen, Francis, Lambert, , Gnifen, Hopkins, and many others well known to the j»eopie, and have restored Dack to life per sons who were dying, and had been given up by ail the doctors of merit in the places where they lived, that we deem a short reference to each of the Three Simple Remedies we use in' ; the R. R. R., practice sufficient to warrant the sick, the ailing and the diseased, to give these i liie-saving and Ready Remedies a fair trial, j 1. RADWAYS READY RELIEF, lor all purposes where the body is seized with pain, I w hether it bt of a simple character, or the most , torturing paroxysm; whether it be Toothache i or C holera: whether Headache or Spasms and j Cramps ; whether aches or pains in the bones or | joints, shoulders or back, or the more terrible of I spasms of Neuralgia; whether in the bowels or I joints, he id, back, or stomach, Radway’s Ready S Relief will in a few minutes restore the most j terribly afflicted to ease and comfort. II. RADWAY’S RENOVATING RESOL VENT is lor the cure of all Chronic and old es tablished diseases; of Humors, Skin Diseases, Scrofula, Bronchitis, Bad Coughs, Dyspepsia, Syphilis, Sores, Ulcers, Tumors, Nodes, Swel I lings, Radway s Renovating Resolvent has cured j J the most frightfully afflicted objects, who were j ! covered from head to loot with Boils, Sores, and * rictus. Even wheu the human body was so | frightfully mutilated by the lava of disease as I to render it necessary that the leper should be ; banished from the presence of society, and be ; kept in separate apartments, as the havoc which I disease bad made in the human body was so dis j gusting as to shock and sicken the senses ol the most intimate mends, Radway’s Renovating f Resolvent has given to such objects new and < healthy bodies, and filled the veins with a fresh, j pure and healthv stream of blood. | ‘ III. RAD WAY'S REGULATORS.—The dis covery of this last great remedy, establishes in I [ medicine entirely new principles, which medi ! cal writers and sages have lor years in vain j sought to discover. In RaJvvay’s Regulators we | give to the world a cathartic, purgative aperient, i I'mrutip ilia aiwl at)0\e all a RtglliatOf I i ot the whole human body. i ! A pill that, while it purges from the body the , j refuse deposits, it heals all sores, ulcers, or irri- , i tation in the bowels or mncuous membranes, j Renewed strength follows every operation, and ( j instead of the paiient growing weaker by their . evacuations, as is the result that follows all ' i drastic pills, every organ, nerve, and tissue ol j i the body is strengthened bv their healing, cleans- j • ing and regulating efficacy: The use ot Radw’ay s ! I Regulators will dispense entirely with that baDe- , j fv.l drug Calomel. Blue Pill, or Mercury, in any j i torm; all the good effects either “the doctor’ or , i the patient expects to derive from the use ol j ; Mercury will be secured by Radway’s Regula | tors, without endangering the system by salivat ing it. Henc- the great important advantage I which the discovery ot Radway’s Regulators secures to the human race, in sudden attacks ot Yellow* Fever, Typhus Fever, Scarlet Fever, Con gested, Billious, Remittant, and Intermittant Fe vers. In Cholera, Dysentery, and all other in fectious and malignant maladies, Radway’s Re gulators are just the remedy required in those malignant cases. They heal all sore6 and ul ; cers either in the bowels or on the coat of the I stomach; even if the whole intestines were raw : and ulcerous along the whole length ol the bowels, they will not irritate or occasion any pain ; they expel quickly all poisonous and in lectious deposits, and will, as soon as disstdved i in the stomach, withdraw the congested and ac cumulated humors from the interior surface of the bowels, and expel all such humors entirely from the system. A pot her great influence they exert upon the system is their regulating powers. No matter whether it be a man or woman, whose system may be out of order, whose organs are irregu lar, in the natural performance of their several duties, a dose or two of Radway's Regulators will quickly cure all irregularities, and force a pleasant and natural evacuation from the bowels at a regular hour, each and every day. FEVER AND AGUE CURED—Pierson Money, esq., of Carrollton, Miss., owns a large plantation, and works over one hundred negroes on the bottom lands of Mississippi—a section j of country as celebrated for Fever and Ague as ; ! the river Stvx in ancient mythology was dread , ed as a place invested w ith evil spirits. While the negroes of other planters are shaking to pieces with ague, Pierson Money's “darkies are fat, hearty, and happv, at work, singing with joy their songs and gfees, for they feel sate from t albdiseases as long as they have Radw’ay's Rea dy Relief to guard them. Not one hour s work has been lost on Mr. Moneys plantation by sick ness since he began the use ol Railway’s Ready Relief and Regulators among his negroes. On every plantation where Radway s Ready Reme dies are kept for the use of families and servants, you will be sure to find health, happiness and contentment. Radway s Relief and Regulators are positive cures lor Fever and Ague, Dysentery, Bilious ness, Cholic, Headache, Rheumatism, Nervous ness.
