MISCELLANEOUS READING.
STUDYING HUMAN NATURE.
The Buffalo Republic tells a story which
we don’t believe, but it is so good that it is
worth repeating, simply as a joke:
Rev. Henry Ward Beecher, dressed in very
common clothes, was studying human nature
as exhibited in the highways and bye-ways
of New York. In tbe oourse of bis philo
sophic peregrinations be went into a mock
auction shop. He stood awhile on entering,
and reflected, doubtless, bow any one could
be so lost to all sense of truth aod honesty as
the auctioneer in question, endeavoring to
palm off his worthless trash to the inexperi
enced in city ways, as good and valuable, and
finally tbe auctioneer called out: “Mr. Beech
er, why don’t you bid?” He was greatly as
tonished, as we can well imagine, at finding
himself known in this place, and, as he bad
supposed in purposely careless dress. Ho
immediately left, and started for the resi
dence of one of the members of the church in
tbe neighborhood, and requested him, as an
act of kindness, to go down and enquire of
that person who bad sold himself to Satan
for tbe lovo of gain, bow it was that he
knew him in hie disguise. The neighbor
kindly consented, and on entering the “Peter
Funk” shop be addressed the auctioneer:^
“How is it that you know Henry Ward
Beecher so well as to be able to recognize him
in his disguise?”
“How do I know him? Why, I hare been
a member of his congregation for the last fire
years; and own the fjth pew from the front.”
HONESTY OF COUNTRY GIRLS.
An amusing incident took place in one of
tbe large dry goods stores of our city a short
time since. A good looking, honest-faced
country girl came to town with her “feller,”
to do a trifle of shopping.
The magnitude of the store, the piles on
piles of goods, the dazzling array of articles,
the rows of busy clerks, tbe flitting cash
boys, quite overpowered our good friend, who
scarcely knew what to do. Her “feller” ob
stinately refused to go in, but loitered about
the door.
Tbe clerks being all busy just at the mo
ment, tbe young lady was obliged to remain
standing a few moments. At length a dap
per fellow, with gold watebebain, flourishing
moustache, came bowing and smiling up to
tbe blushing customer with, “Anybody wait
ing on you, madam?”
Tbe color deepened in her cheeks, as she
hesitated and drew a long breath, till finally
with a nod of her head towards the door, she
faltered out—“Yes sir, he is.”_
