IHK gazettk TlESPAY MOK.MN*NOVEMBER 3, 1357. kelief against celibacy. In parts of France tbere is, among tbe fe n,ale sex. a holy horror of being regarded as old maids; and as want of money is consider ed tnoir chief difficulty 10 obtaining a bus band resort is had to a novel expeihent to relieve them of this disability. A etterfrom Paris eavs tluH several female clubs have i'jormed in tbe Var and also the Giroude lor mutual relief against celibacy. The original club after which the others ftTe modelled, has been in existence four vears. Kach member pays IOC monthly to the treasury. These subscriptions produce annually 24,000f, to which is added the amount raised by two half-yearly lotteries, of vhich the prizes 4ire composed of valuable articles, the gifts of the members. The origi nal club is composed of two hundred young ladies. At the end of the year tbe society is j enabled to dispose of 30,000for 40,000f which serve to give a marriage portion to two or i three ot the members chosen by ballot. If the fortunate candidates are not married v.ithin a year, the money returns to the corn ni.,n tund, and additional candidates are por tioned the following year. The members of the club continue to pay their subscriptions for ten years after their marriage, and are bound to facilitate by all means Tn their power, the marriage of their associates. The members of the association, married or single, are bound as long as they live to aid and succor their fellow-members under all circumstances, llow it would shock the sensibilities of our American ladies to have to resort to such means as this to ob tain husbands! TSK GW INK TO PREPARE TO SHOUT.’ | The Mariou (Ala.) Commonwealth relates the following story: “For seme time back the negroes of this place have had a religious revival going on! and which, we learn, has resulted in some good. The other night a ludicrous incident took place, which for the time threat ened to roar the enjoyment of the darkies.— While every thing seemed to be going on to the entire satisfaction of the leaders of the meeting, a tall, black-looking son of Africa deliberately rose in tbe congregation and commenced pulling his coat off, as if prepar ing either to thresh some other darkey, or give the uevil it ue were present, ice oesi tight he could, preparatory to closing the meeting. All eyes were turned upon the comical attitude of the darkey, and some of the more timid began to fear that a melee was about to take place in the church.— < This, however, was not the case; for our Af rican convert, seeing the stir that was being made, and the apparent agitation of the whole assembly, hallooed out at the top of of his voice*—“Bredering and sisters, don‘t be frightened, Use only gwine to prepare to shout;” and he gave one of those unearthly ! yells which vibrated through the ohurob, and shook the wiodows as if the house were fall ing. The darkey bad to make tracks, or, to use the language of another darkey, was tum bled head loremost right out of the doors by some of the brethren. RUSSIA. The emancipation of the serfs will soon take place on a grand scale. It is well known that both Alexauder and Nicholas several times tried to emancipate the serfs of the crown, but that very few of the latter would avail themseltes of the facility given them to become free. The serfs in Russia are obliged to work only ten hours a day three times a week for their lords; the re mainder of the week including the Sabbath, belongs to themselves, and under no pretext can their lord compel them to do more work than is owing to him. The lotd 19 be sides obliged to furnish them with every thing they want. It is easy to understand that m iny of the serfs care little about the liberty offered to them, and will accept it with reluc tance. From Poland we bear that no Russian Czar was ever received with so great a manifesta tion of joy a9 Alexander II. This is partly due to the ukase respecting theemancipatioo of the serfs, and to the pardon granted to many exiles, and the permission to return to their country. From Berlin our Pr. Baird went to Peters burg to ask the Czar to allow missionaries to distribute over the empire Russian Bibles, lie was received by the Emperor with great kindness. A conversation took place on that subject, which ended by the Emperor’s re questing Pr. Baird to present him a written memorial on the question. *l FFFREP FORGIVING GOOD APY 1CE. A worthy clergyman in New ^<>rk following the practice of his ministerial brethren, recently preached a very earnest discourse on the" hard times, enforcing the duty of retrenchment and economy- Imme diately after church the congregation took him at bis word by holding a meeting, at which his salary was cut down from $1,000 to $r,oo. _ rpo delinquent heal estate x OWNERS.—All persons indebted to the t »>rj eration for real estate, which has been ie* turned delinquent, are hereby notified that im mediate pa)ment of ihe same is required.— 1 heir failure to discharge such indebtedness be toie the K»tb day oi December next, will subject the paities to a sale of the delinquent property and r:lidunt rnttc I tiese bills will be iour.d in the bands ot the f ollectors. * G.
