THE GAZETTE. TUESDAY MORXIXO, JANUARY ;i. 1 ^00. \VI\TK1UNG COWS. Almost every family, especially in the country an<i the smaller towns*, keep one or more cows. for the purpose of supplying themselves with milk and butter?both arti cles of prime necessity with every house keeper. In this paper we shall not speak of the care and management of large dairies, but rather of ease* like those above indica ted, whore their owners do not often study that close economy in feeding their cows, and in the disposal ol their products, * hie fa nuty very profitably be given in large establish ments. But everywhere those who would have milk in winter, must not forget that Kuceulent and nutritious food is needed to keep up its flow. But slight dependence can be had on dry fodder alone, unless it be first rate, both in'character and quality. Milch cows should be stabled, especially at night, and in stormy weather. This is too frequently neglected, the milch cow re ceiving no better eare than those not in milk, or the young stock of the farmer.? This is a mistaken policy, if milk is de sired. And from good cows, well fed and cared for, it is more valuable thau at any other season of the year. Good butter can be made, and commands a Letter price than at any other season. It will pay for owe cow or for scores, to keep them sheltered and com fortabie?all their wautsas fully supplied as circumstances will allow. A proper and convenient supply of water is of much importance. No animal, and no milch cow especially, should be compelled to wander oif in the bleak, cold storm, to some distant pond or spring-hole for drink, but .should have it supplied at or near the yard, if possible. When there is difficulty in get ting water, cattle are apt to driuk too much at a time, and milch cows decrease in milk from such painful distention of the stomach with ice cold water. Many dairymen find it profitable to warm the water given their j cows and animals iu winter. Good liny may well form a part of the winter feed of cows, but they need some thing more in order to a good supply of rich milk. Carrots and other root crops, also pumpkins and apples, promote the tlow of milk and the health aud thrift of the animal, ' Where these cannot be had, the coarser graina, ground and mixed with chopped hay or straw, or cornstalks, may be fed to the cows, or they map' be employed in couqection with the article* first named. An occasional change of feed is much relished by cows us well as other stuck, aud promotes both health and appetite. Oats and barley, or oats aud corn <5r buckwheat, or rye, form a good provender or meal lor this purpose. Corn meal fed alone has a teudeney to dry off the milk?its greatest talue is for fattening rather than milk-making purposes. Give cows what good hay and well-cured cornfodder they , "will fully dispose of, and a peck or so of shorts or provender properly wet or seasoned I with a Utile salt, and they will continue in i milk as longasth'?ugh roots were given them, 1 and yield milk of a richer character. Regularity, both iu feeding and milking, is necessary to the comfort and thrift of the cow. Many, when their cows give but h, small quantity, milk but once a day in w in ter. Y.'e cannot commend the practice, and ?would not follow it unless for the purpose of drying off our cows, it is true they give a' a loss quantity at night than at morning, but milked regularly, the night's milking may be looked upon as so much extra to what would ; be obtained with milking once a day.? I Counbnj Gentleman. Horribi.e Sufferings of a Family.?The j Pottsville Miners' Journal, gives a distress- i ing accouuiof the sufferings of a family nam- j eel Frantz, in Schuylk.ll county. Pa., during | the extreme cold weather of Saturday last.? j A young man, who, it seems, had been sent from St. Clair to llazleton, with a team, for i the our|?o*o of removing the family to the former fdaoo, found it necessary to uuhit;h j his hordes and leave the wagon on a moun- j tian, to go home and have his horses' shoes sharpened. The persous composing the fam ily, loft in that dangerous position, were Mr. Frauu, five small children, an elder daugh ter and her husband. After the driver had been absent some time, the family left the wagon, tor the purpose, if possible, of reach ing their home: but the rain falling fast and freezing as rapidly as it feel, impeded their progress. All, finally, became exhausted except the young man and his wife, who picked up the remaining child, a boy, and proceeded home as rapidly as posfible. On reaching home, he informed his friends of the occurrence, and they started in search of the unfortunate sufferers. When discovered, Mrs. Frantz aud the children were insensible. The mother vras lying on her back, with her babe press ed tightly to her bosom, while her clothing ?was frozen to the ground. One of the chil dren. a little girl, while attempting, evi dently to crawl up the hill, had slipped; her clothing was stripped from her person, and she whs tound exposed and frozen to the ground. The children were taken to a place of shelter, but Mrs. Fiautz was not remov ed until a wagon had been procured. The tirst inquiry from her lips when restored to consciousness, was for her children. The boy first taken home, has died. It is thought that Mrs. Frantz will recover. The babe is well. Thereis, hoA'ever, some doubt of the recovery ofthe other children. PAR ROTT, | i dep 21 No. 166 King street \ 1T0RCESTERS PIANOS.?From the New i VV York Commercial Advertiser, Noveuib?r 17th, 1859:?"For the better part of a generation thev have been constantly before the public, ail ?>i them, old and new, proving, by their stability and i constancy, the skill with which they arc construc ted. For durability of tone, for evenness and uni formity of work, and for excellence of frames, these PIANOS may well challenge competition. We know instruments of Mr. Worcester s turn out, that have borne the thumping of fifteen years, and remain as perfect in tone and in build as in their first estate. The number made at this Factory is largely increased from year to }ear. Iam sole Agent in Alexandria, for the above PIANOS, and will furnish any number at Factory prices. 5 per ct. off for cash, or at six month- for approved negotiable paper, and w arrant every Instrument. Feeling perfectly satisfied that a better PIANO cannot be had in tho United States I respectfully solicit ordirs from all who want, and are disposed to patronize home trade. DOT 28?-tf JOHN II.
