THE GAZETTE. THURSDAY EVENING, MARCH 12. That Suit for a Million.?Mention has been made of the fact that suit has beeo brought in the Dame of Hoo. Alexander H. Stephens against the Western and Atlantic | .Railroad Company and Mr. HazleburBt, of ? Georgia, to recover one million of dollars. It appears, however, that Mr. Stephens never au thorized this >uit, and from facts now made public it sc-eius that the case has no basis. At the time thu company was formed to lease the ioad from the State Mr. Stephens applied to Gov. Brown, as his friend, to get him an in terest iu the lease. Bruwn inststed on this iu the formation of the company, and secured the interest for Mr. Stephens. Soon alter the lease was made it wad intimated that there was something fraudulent about it, and Mr. Ste phens, not caring to face the storm, conveyed his interest back to the State. After be bad returned it Governor Bullock, acting under the law, which required lum to lease the whole road, was unwilling to/make the State a part ner in the lease, aud, with the consent of the lessees and their securities, he substituted Mr. Haz'.ehurst for Mr. Stephens. It is also learn ed that while there vzas assigned to Mr. Ste phens one-half ot a share, it was done with the understanding that he convey half of that to S. K. Johnson, Superintendent of the Georgia Road, which Mr. Stephens did. The interest, therefore, which he conveyed back to the State is but one fourih of a share, or one-ninety second part of the whole, and for the profit on which one million of dollars has been claimed. According to this claim, the lessees must have made ninety-two million dollars of profit up to this time, an evident impossibility. Colling wood Co operative Homestead Association.?The Washington Chronicle of this morning says : An adjourned meeting of this association was held last evening iu the Board of Trade rooms,. W. H. Snow-Jen in the chair; M. A. Tappan, secretary. Much inter est and enthusiasm ?were manifested. The plans and purposes of the project were ably discussed by Colonel Daniels Colonel Chase, Mr. Nelson, Mr. Tappan, W.H. Suowdeu, and others. All agreed that the establishment of a suburban place on the banks of the Potomac, easily accessibly at convenient times and sea sons, where the proprietors could enjoy all the advantages of country and city bleuded, wa> a great and growing need of our citizens. The association adjourned lor one week, contem plating at that time tp take immediate steps for a permanent organization. Special Xottce!
