VOL. LXXVI. ALEXANDRIA, VA., FRIDAY, OCTOBER 1, 1875. NO. 170. ALEX A.GAZETTE * VIRGINIA ADVERTISER PUBLISHED DAILY BY BD&AXi SNOW UEPff. GAZETTE BUILDING, NO. 70 PRINCE STREET. One year $8 00 Six months 4 00 Three months 2 00 One month .'. 75 ALEXA.OAZETTE & VIRGINIA ADVERTISER (FOR THE COUNTRY) Published Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, At five dollars per annum. Transient advertisements inserted at $1.00 per square, (eight lines or less) for first insertion, and twenty-five cents for each subsequent in sertion. Marriage and Death Notices fifty cents. Obitu uaries will be charged at advertisement rates for notices over four lines Virginia Hams. ?We beg our friends in the country to care as many hams as they can. Corn is abundant. Tbey can make more profit out of that large crop by fattening hogs and curing good "Virginia hams" than they oan in any other way. We are all sick of chubby western hams, with their elephant like hocks ?hams the fat of whieh is transluent and oily to a degree that makes a man often wish that they were not on the table. Then, too, few of the paper-covered and canvassed hams ever lose the flavor of mould that envelopes them. Last winter there were orders here for Vir ginia hams fnfm New York aod from London. They could not be filled. We understand the cause very well. But may there not now be a oondition of things that will enable the farmers to gladden consumers once more with good.ex quisitely flavored, toothsome bams? In times of trial all men like to meet old acquaintances. It is a pleasure, even though it be dashed with a trace ot melancholy. We should certainly, as all good people would, we doubt not, wel comes a real daioty ()!d Virginia ham as a very much esteemed aod genial acquaintance of other aod better days. Nor let us yet forget the excellent Virginia middling, which, for boiling with cabbage or peas, is not to be excelled; or, for frying fish or any fresh meat, is better than lard.?Rich mond Dispatch. Sale of Shorthorns.?The etuire herd of pedigree shorthorns the property of Mr. Geo. Moore, of Whitehall, Cumberland, ia Eng land, was sold at auction on September 9, at the Home Farm, Whitehall. There was a large gatheriug at the sale, which was highly successful. Twenty eight cows and heifers and seven bulls were sold for ?10,343; the twenty eight cows and heifers brought ?10.308; the seven bulls sold for ?235. For Grand Duchess of Oxford XL, a red oow, calved in July, 1867, Sir Curtis Lampson, Sussex, paid 2,000 guineas. Duchess, a red cow, realizd 375 guineas, Mr. Rigg, of K. ;nt, being the pur chaser. The same gentleman *ave 400 guineas for Flighty Gwynne, and the Rev. P. Graham Turooroft gave eight hundred and fifty guinens for Siddington IX. Sir Wilfred Lawson bought Graceful Dutchess for 500 guineas, and Mr. Blandford,of Nottinghamshire, gave seven hundred and sixty guineas for Lady Worcester X. For Lily Gwynne the Eirl of B.ctive gave 515 miineas, and for Grand Duchess of Oxford XXXL, a red-white calf not yet three months olii, the Duke of Devonshire gave 1, 0U0 guineas. The bulls aud bull calves did not bring high figures. Sir Wilfred Liwson presided at the luncheon. Six of the cows and heifers had just recovered from foot and mouth disease. Among these was the cow that sold for two thousand guineas. A Case of Total Depravity.?On the night of August 26th last, Charles H. Madeo, a young man twenty years of age, who had long been a disgrace to his parents, and had been driven from home by them, broke into their house at No. 552, 2d avenue, and stealthily entered bis mother's room. His mother asked him what he was doing, and be replied that he would kill her if she made any noise. He then took possession of her pocket book, which contained $8, and made his escape. His moth er complained to the police, and a few days afterwards the young rascal was taken into cus tody by Deieotive Dunn. He was duly indict ed for burglary io the first degree, acd to-day was arraigned before Recorder Hackett, io the Court of General Sessions, for trial. The evi dence disclosed the above facts, and also that almost from his infancy Maden had led a life of crime, having served io the State prison and penitentiary, The jury rendered a verdict of guilty. Recorder Hackett,io passing sentence, said that in the whole course of his official ca reer he had never met such a case of willful wiokedness and total depravity, and therefore he owed it as a duty to society to pass the high eat sentence knowo to the law. He then sen tenced Maden to State prison at hard labor for the term of tenty years. Maden throughout the trial bore an air of bravado, and laughed when the sentence was prooounced.?Niiv York Commercial. Rich Effects for Toilettes.?For very rich toiletteb new effects are sought by comb ining two very different colors, and these new or at least hitherto unseen effects are found everywhere. Dresses or cream colored crape de laine aud nurine blue faille, the tablier of crape covered with ruches pinked on both sides, and the train is of crape bordered all around with an enormous pii.ked ruche; the corsage of faille is covered with orape half way up from the belt, aud the sleeves are of crape. This is a dinner toilette. Another dress is of flax gray ?atio and pale rose-colored brocade; another is all bronze velvet and sulphur faille; and all are amalgamated, twisted, draped, folded ood pleated in a manner that defies all description, bo that one could not decide which was the be ginning or the end of the different breadths of the material which compose a toilette of the present day. But amoog this mixture of dif ferent stuffs the prettiest will always be a com binatioo of a beautiful faille and brocade with large damask flowers, while the most expen sive material this winter will be brocaded vel vet; for instanoe. on a foundation of pale rose, bend biue, or faded green are designs of vel vet, in relief, of exquisite taste, and this is combined with plain faille of the same shade as the foundation of the brocaded velvet. The people who laughed at what thay con sidered Capt. Eides's visioaary projeot of deep ening the ohannel of the Mississippi by means o a system of jetties, arc beginning to take a new view of the subject since the work has been actually underway. Capt. It is particularly adapt;d for disinfecting sick rooms in case^ ol typhus fever, small pox, cholora, scarlet fever, diarrhoea, and all contagious diseases, and loi purifying rooms in which there are dead bodies, removing at once all unpleasant smells, and destroying effectually any latent germs of dis ease.
