JETER, lo response to a request to furnish the Rich mond Dispatch with his views of those portions of tbe President's message which refer to the taxation of church property and to public edu cation, Rev. Dr. J. B. Jeter, senior editor of the Religious Herald, aud one of the most dis tinguished Baptist clergymen of the South, on Saturday said: ' I have been able to bestow but little con sideration on the part* to which you refer. 1 will give you my hastily-formed views of them without attempting to support them by argu ments. "First, then, in regard to public education I must say I can see no good reason why the Federal Government should intermeddle with it. To say nothing of the difficulty of compell ing poor States, with a scattered population, to furnish adequate means for the education of ail the children within their limits, it seems eminently proper, if there are State Govern ments, that they should have the entire con trol ol popular edacation within I heir respec tive territories. They may be supposed to be best acquainted with their resouic-s and the necessities, tastes, and wishes of their constit uents. "To compulsory education, by Federal or State Government, I am earnestly opposed. The right to teach involves the right to decidc what shall be taught. If a Government has a right to proscribe "all religions, atheistic (if there be any such) and pagan/' in its public schools, then it has an equal right to require that Christianity or Mohammedanism shall be taught. The Constitution doee not create rights, but merely defines and limits such as are admitted to exist. It changes, as the history of our country has shown, with the views, interests, and caprices of the people. The principle involved in compul sory education by the State lies at the founda tion of all despotism and tyranny : it is that the people are not to be trusted to educate themselves and their children ; but must, for their own good, be taken under Government tutelage. With many doubts as to its ultimate advuntnges 1 favor a system of public educa tion by State authority, of which parents and guardians may avail themselves in the instruc tion of their children so far as their interests, tastes, and circumstances may permit ; but I would greatly prefer the abolitioo of the sys tem to compulsory eduoation. "With the views of the message in regard to church property in the maio I agree, but do not clearly perceive why they should have been presented by the President. The General Government derives uo portioo of its revenues irom direct taxation on property. It will be time euough to discuss the propriety of taxing church property by the Federal authority when it is proposed to tax other property. At present tbe question is theoretical, not prac tical. "As, however, the Governor of this State bas suggested the desirableness of taxing church property for the support of the Government, I will offer a few remarks on the subject: 1 am an advocate of a clear separation of Church and State. By how muco the State remits of taxes on church property by so much it im poses burdens on other interests for the sup port of religion. The right to impose taxes arises from the necessity of revenues to enable Governments to accomplish their legitimate purposes; and they should be laid equally on all property and all interests sharing in gov ernmental protection uuless there be clear reasons, affecting the publio good, to depart f rom that rule. Church property is protected by Government, and should bear its share of the burden of supporting it." j Communicated. Who can help a feeling of pity, of sorrow, for that class of men io our community now becoming so large?the "old bachelors?" Who can help sympathisiog with thorn for their loneliness of heart and home? "Old fellows" whose parents are gone, no ties bind ing them to the earth, but little hope of heaven ; to whom all seems dark and dreary ; they simply exist, they vegetate. Living neither in the memories of the past nor tor the hopes? of the future?sad, sad life ! Calliog on one of them a few days since, living in a grand old home, I was struck with the utter desola tion of all around. LookiDg into room after room, once furnishod io a stylo to suit the taste of the most fastidious lady; handsome chairs, rotting dowo for want of use, Brussels carpets simply mouldering away. Coming upon him in the third story?back room?I could not help dropping a tear, as I found him slowly pacing his solitary chamber. Struck with the compassion so plainly shown on my face, he was moved as I never saw him moved before, and told me his history. 'Twas briefly this: Born in a large family, with great wealth, his si&ters all married and wandered away ; somehow, he could not leave the "old people." Time wore on, giving his whole soul to the woman of hislove. "O, God ! forgive me ! that 1 worshipped her instead of thee !" But the old people liked not the idea ol a "stranger woman" comming to live under their roof. Having no money to go away with her?for every effort from childhood was given to the e.-tite?he gave her up. Year after year hope grow lainter, fainter. "In time, mother and father were taken away, leaving me houses, lands, aud money, but Oh ! my God! so lone ly, so desolate ! All, all will I now give to ex change places with the humbled tenant on my estates, his lovely wife, his merry children ! Go, my friend, tell every one, had I my life togo over again, I would marry?yea,a "ditch er's daughter," rather than lead my present wretched existence." It takes no very acute observer of the times to see that the moral tone of our best society is becoming worse and worse. Young men, marry, marry, marry, for 1 assure you the words spoken thousands of years ago, "It is uot good that the man should bo alone, 1 will make him a help meet for him," is felt most forcibly to day by this Old Bachelor. It is the only true disinfectant known, all other preparations sold for this pur pose being merely deodorizers (or articles wnich possess the property of overpowering unpleasant srnolls by thoir own pungent and often disagree ablo and dangerous qualities.) It is particularly adapted for disinfecting sick rooms in cases of typhus fever, small pox, cholera, scarlot fever, diarrhoea, and all contagious diseases, and foi puriiying rooms in which there are dead bodies, removing at once all unpleasant smells, and destroying etFeetually any latent gorms of dis ease. For stables, slaughtor houses, butchers' shops, dairies, cellars, <fec., it is invaluable, keoping them in a perfectly wholesome stato, by merely sprinkling the di luted fluid over the floors and walls.
