gtaitima &r2i\h. TUESDAY EVENING, DEC. 21. New England Indifference.?Says the 1 Go'ideo Kale: "The fact id Boston and New j Eoglaud are already io the majority of their : population, non-churchgoiog. The Church, aud heoce the VVord of God, is fast ceasiDg to be a power over the popular thought and consci ence. The average man and woman cares lit tle for either. They neither attend the ser vices of the oae nor read the other, as a rule. In short, it amounts to ja^t this : Young New England is growiug up Bibleless. That worst phase of skepticism is beiug reached?univer sal and good uatured carelessuess touching re ligious claims and toacuings. The skepticism, mark you, is home-bred. The "scientists" have nothing t > do with it. Its parents arc here, its home is here; here, too, it is oursed. . Its mother is bigotry and .-t ffoe.-s aud coldness in the administration of our churches. Its taiher is dry aud stupid proaching. The Church has* as it were, turned against herself, and by her own errors aud weakness lo*t her hold on the popular heart and the popular imagination. The hopeful sign, the one bright beam that peoetrates, with it> golden shalt the very cen tre of the black cloud is?that the Church her self is getting alarmed. A WortD to Boys.?VV ho is respected ? It is the boy who conduets himself well; who is 1 honest, diligent and obedient in ail things. It is the boy who is making an effort continually to respect his father, and obey him in what ever he may direct to be done. It is the boy who is kind to other little boys, who respects age, and who never gets into d.ffioulties and quarreis with his companions, it is the boy who leaves no effort untried to improve him self in knowledge and wisdom every day ; who is busy and active in endeavoring to do good acts towards others. Show me a boy who obey? his parents, who is diligent, who has re spect for age, who always has a friendly dispo sition and who applies himself diligently to get wisdom aod to do good towards others, and if he is not respected and beloved by every one, then there is no.such thing as truth in the world. Remember this, little boys, and you will be respected by f>thers, aud you will grow up and become useful men. Advantages 'of Women.?It has become such a chronic habit in women to cry out against their disadvantages that they forget that they inherit also a tew real advantages, and, what is worse, forget to use them. Sup pose every unoccupied woman casting about for "a sphere," should ask herself this ques tion aod answer it in her own life, and in the lives which late has interlapped with hers: "Have I done the most io my p;wer for every human being who is influenced by me? If not, I will do it."' Would her life not instantly take on new dignity, sweetness, and power? Few are the women who really realize how much they have to do with the making and unmaking of the meD associated with their life, who are moved aod moulded through con tact with their individual character and influ ence.
