THURSDAY EVENING, MARCH 31. Suicide.?Hon. Thomas C. Reynolds committed suicide at the custom-house at St. Louis yesterday afternoon by plunging down the elevator shaft from the third floor. He fell a distance of eighty feet, anil crushed in his skull. The cause of the rash act was mental derangement, superinduced by hallucinations that he was about to be? come insane. In his pocket was found a lettor to his wife, stating that two years ago he contracted malaria at Aspinwall, and had failed to recover, the disease settling in his spine. Recently be had been troubled by insomnia and frequent nervousness. Visions invited him to join his dead friends, aud, fc-arii g lest he should be a burden to hij wife by becoming a lunatic, having twice before been troubled with domentit?, and his estate of $25,000 beiug in order, un? impaired and productive, he determined to end his life. Thomas C. Reynolds was born in Charleston, S. C. In 1S31 he studied in the University of Virginia, and continued bis education in Oermany, graduating at Heidelberg in 1842. He spent ouo year iu the University of Paris, aud was admitted to thtvbar in Virginia in 1S44. He was sec retarv of the United States legation to Spain in 1846 at.d 1S-1S. In 1859 ho located at St. Louis. In 1800 he was elected lieutenant governor of Missouri on the same ticket with Governor Claib Jackson, and in the civil war Bided with the Confederacy'. At the close of the war he went to Mexico. In ISO'S be returned to St. Louis. He was a member of the commission sent to South America about two years ago in the interest of commerce with the United States. It 1854 be fought a duel with B. Gralz Brown with rifles at thirty paces on the island op? posite St. Louis over a political discuss/on. Mr. Brown was hit in the kr.ee, but Mr. Reynolds was not touched.
