I Correspondence of the Alexandria Gazette.! City or Mexico, Oct. 22.?These nisks are situated abbat mid-way between Vera Cruz and the City of Mexico, ou tho same route taken by General Scott in his march from the coast to the Capital. Thoy are en? circled by high mountains and some uf the finest timber land in the country. These dense forests abound in wild game including wolves, wild cats, Mexican hen;; and many other kinds. Here, too, the professional bwaymen find a hiding place after their raids uu the road. As we passed through every passenger wae aimed and every man we met v.as .'canned with an expression of doubt us (o whether Lo should he fired on or uot. Tho reputation and loneliness,of the pass makes tbo passage through hero ap? pear as Ion? hems of suspense mingled with fear and excitement. And, indeed, our worst fears seemed about to be realized when we saw three mounted and armed men drawn u:> and waiting our approach just beyond a lonely turn in the road. Well, I the moments which followed are more easily Lmagiued than described. Suffice (o say, in our mind, we lived over all the tragedies and hair breadth escapes of a genuin? yel? low buck novel. But time \\as shortfor ac? tion auii we fell called upon to decide imme tiititeiy on the question of life cr pocket book. Then we began, to reflect what a pity i: would be !'< ro iiack dead and thus ??e disqualified to write it all up. So in view of ail this, our nerves began to ie ax, and ourthirrt for human gore and a battle with the brigands was transformed into ? lamb J:ke resignation to our fate. Bu withal we rather re joiced al the pros? pect of receiviug just provocation to write tbm count.-y aod its people up black. Ob 1 bin we would i;. our mind, when at our d< ak, bang the scalps of the brigands to our I ibtol belt. We ".<.;u!d make our blistering pen cr.u gaul and aqua fortis on the heads of tho nation for permittingsuich outlaws to go at large. We would drive sleep from i their eyes and pence from their sculs for the re; t of their lives. Just then We felt ready and almost willing to band put to the rob? bers the. pay in advance as a prico for this privilege. And just, then they appeared in front of the stage window, with the word?, ; V silo I v: caba'lecri" o: hew are you gen? tlemen, just then we learned that our sup? posed robbere were a Mexican mounted guard of llurales who bad beet; ordered out to meet tho stage and guard it through this lonely part ? ' the road Thus our lino theme fade;; away sh<3 wo emerged from ihe woods and entered the bread planes yel? low with fields ef wheat, und alive with harvesters, the whole malting a very prima tivo scene. All tho great fields wero being cat with the reap-hookand the women were binding and the children were gathering up to ? scattered cars, as Ituth of old, while the men were carrying them out in rope fulls on their backs. These harvesters leceive Irom one to four bits a day and board them? selves, while the lord ot the great domain rides about and superintends nil. The bay is cut in the same way and is ofteu bound and taken to market ou the backs of don keys. These poor laborers work on from youth to old age about as slaves or as bond? men nound to the soil by debt. It is far woi e than slavery was in the states before the war, for here they are not clothed or provided lor in sickness and are often de? nied a permanent burial in death. After the day's journey we put up at the ancient city of Perolu, where ibo Spaniards built the largest and r;rougetat foil or castle to be fauna in the new world. Troe to the ancient style H has its ancient watch towors deep moat, and draw-bridge. After visiting this and other places of minor interest we returned to Ibe "posado" or stage house, where- we slept until midnight when we were called up to continue our journey. So we rose, entered the ?tage, and in tho midst of a cold night rain, we passed out of tho Blumbering city and were soon far ou our way across tbo Saltpeter Lakes, which are hut low flat sheets of shallow water that cover this part of the plain. The stage was drawn by ten mules, and all went slow, with the wheels dowu in the mud and water nearly to the asles. The rain continued To fall and the mules began to tire our, and soon the stage came to a standstill, when a fresh start resulted only in breaking the double-trees, when tbo five . '.uules deliberately waded ashore and we were left alone in the darkness, rain, and in the centro of the lake. Hero we remain? ed until three in the morning, when we wero carried f-hore or. the backs of pcones. Here we remained until six in the morning, when fresh mules and about ten Indians drew tbo empty stage out, and we again went our way. But, being tired, sleepy and hungry, with wet clothes on, this part of the trip was uot very conducive to per I .sonal comfort or any enjoyment of the scenes on the road. This lasted until about ten o'clock, when we reached the next posado. where fresh muies, hot coffee and a smok iug breakfast awaited us, which, it is need? less to say, with dry clothes, turned all the shadows into sunshine, after which we again entered the stage and started offal a rate of srii-eu in which the dogs could hardly keep up This continued until threo o'clock iu' toe afternoon, when we reached the town of San Marcos, where we took the tra:n and went in search of new scenes, which we will give in our next.
