Vainly have the audiences that witnessed the mystifying performances of Professor Alexander Hermann, at the New Haven Op? era Hou3e, Thursday, Friday and Saturday j evenings, endeavored to ascertain by what' means bo- accomplished the many tricks be did. The audiences of the present day are too highly educated to believe that there is anything supernatural about the perform ancee of magicians, They know that every* thing is an illusion; there is nothing real about it, but it was impossible for any one to detect the modus operandi of any of toe numerous tricks performed by the world famed prestidigitateur, Hermann. If any man was ever fitted naturally for any pro? fession, he is for the profession he follows. His bands are long and slim, and have one peculiarity. The palms are so concave that he can easily hold an egg in one hand, and allow that member to hang by his side in an easy manner, Thi3 peculiarity aids him greatly in acts of palming ; that is, holding an object in one hand while appealing to pass it. to the other, which forms a great factor in the art of the magician. Moreover, his bands are wonderfully sirocg, he being abie to tear a pack of cards in halves with ease. Hermann seldom tells how any of his tricks are done, and his natural modesty causes him to refrain from talking very much about himself. To a reporter who visited him recently he give an ex? hibition of palming and parlor magic, per? forming some very remarkablo feats with common objects, such as rings, cane?, etc. "I once bad a singular experience," ho said, "while giving a performance at the house of the governor of Montevideo, in which I had the tables turned oq me. During my perform? ance I noticed three half savage Patagon ians standing aside from the rest of the com? pany, and I at once determined to have some funtwith them. From the nose of tbo first I too'k an orange, from the hair of the second I took a number of silver coins, and the third wa3 overpowered with terror when I extracted a live rat from his nose. Utter? ing a cry of fright, the Patagonians with? drew. Wbiie receiving the congratulations of the guest on the success of tho entertain? ment, I discovered that my watch and chain, purse, eye glasats and handkerchief were missing. In a ehort time the Patagonians returned, and the one from whoso nose the rat had been taken handed me the missing artioles. He had picked my pocket st the moment he appeared to bo overcome with fright." Some of the tricks performed by Herrmann are very simple. The trick of taking rabbits from a silk hat is especially so. Oo either side of tho magician's coat are two deep pockets in which the rab? bits are concealed. Holding tbo hat near the coat he by a slight gesture diatrncts the attention of the audience and by a quite movement the animal is forced into the bat. The second one may be introduced in the same manner, or he stoops down to place the first rabbit on the floor and then easily puts the second animal into the hat, which is held near his breast. Another favorite of nisi? allowing a person to shoot a pistol which is loaded with a marked bullet, at him, he catching the bullet in his hand. The bul? let is marked by a person in the audience and is then banded to Hermann. He palms it, substituting a bullet made of common black lead or graphite. In ramming, this bullet in the pistol it is ground to dust, and is as harmless as if the pistol were only load? ed with powder. A: soon as the pistol is discharged he shows the marked bullet he palmed and mystifies the audience. All of bis tricks are built upon a plan similar to these. He does not do what he is expected to, but by bis dexterity ho leads the aui dence to believe that he does all be says. Hermann does not claim to be the professor of supernatural power, but he does claim he can mystify an audience. Cured by Faith.?Referring to the great number of cures which have been effected this year at Ste. Anne de Beaupre, province of Quebec, VEtcndard of Montreal says that at least three took place during the recent pilgrimage of the Catholics of Redford, Is. Y., to that place. The mother of tb6 Rev. Father Charleowneau, of Lyon Mountain, who for nearly a year could" neither walk nor use her hands?her limbs being para? lyzed?after receiving communion at the shrine walked back to the boat and gained complete control of her arms and bands. Mrs. E. VieDS, of the same place, had been told by her physicians that she would never be able to walk. However, after honoring the relics of the saint, she was able to dis? card her crutches aud go back to her pew unaided, and haB been able to walk ever since. A young lady of Maione, whose name is not given, had a tumor in one of her feet, completely deDriving her of the use of j her foot. After her devotions at the shrine j the swelling and pain commenced abating j and she is now completely restored to health. Syrup oi Figs Is Nature's own true laxative.
