A Beautiful Adventuress.
Politics and Parnelliam have quite crowd?
ed off the scene the interesting trial which
took place at the Old Bailey last week, and
which ended by the condemnation of the
most remarkable adventuress of the age to
a term of five years' penal servitude, with
scarcely a passing notice. As the uotorioas
Mrs. "Gordon Baillie" stood up ia the pris?
oner's dock to receive sentence it could be
seen that she was a far handsomer type of
Englishwoman than Mrs. Langtry, thougn
both are about the same age. Mrs. "Bail
lie's" beauty and extraordinary powers of

1S77 to New York uuder the name of Mr.

tbentrica! company there but failed, and
they came back here to their old tracks.
She got $100,000 out of Sir Richard Duck
worth King and w ut to Australia two years
ago. She then came back and affiliated
herself with i\ man named Frost, a scholar
and a promising lawv er, whose infatuation
cost him his profession. She forged checks
and Frost passed tbem. and both were
brought up with a round turn. Frost was
let oil with (ightoeu months' hard labor, a
more severe sentence in reality than his
paramour. Bold and bad as she was, Mrs.
Gordon Baillie broke down utterly when the
sentence was pronounced, and marched off
to prison leaving five little children desti
